Another tragic week of recalls has afflicted our lives, expanding into several dry foods. I’m sure many of you want to know what’s going on, and while we do not have all of the answers, we can give you a pretty good jumpstart on them.
MenuFoods recently issued a recall on numerous brands of foods. Although the majority of them are canned or pouches, there have been a few dry foods that have slipped through. Accordingly, many of us have been forced to change the brand of food we are feeding our pets, but to what? Nearly every major brand has had a recall, all of those glossy ads and entertaining commercials – all of them have foods that have been recalled. Who do we trust? Keep in mind that there are also other recalls coming in that have nothing to do with this one. We want to provide you with some answers, as well as an “easy to read” list of foods so you don’t have to scroll through MenuFoods individual manufacturing lists. We have done this on our “Complete cat recall list,” “Complete Dog Recall List”, and “All Recalls (Any Breed)”. Here you can download a spreadsheet and just sort or hit “control F” to find your brand of your food. It’s not much, but it’s something we can offer our readers. Many people are writing in asking me how many pets have died, and I don’t have an answer. Menu Foods are only admitting to a few that occurred during their “palatability tests,” individual states and veterinarians are reporting many more. A site called Click here is reporting over 2,400. With all of the strays, ferals and homeless pets out there – we may never know the final death rate.
Now – what’s going on…
Originally MenuFoods believed that aminopterin was responsible for our pet’s dying. However, after concern from veterinarians who did not believe that the symptoms matched the poison, and many more tests by groups such as Cornell University and the FDA, they believe the culprit is now melamine. Is this really the cause though? Time will tell. It is widely believed that wheat gluten was contaminated by poison, and they have since stopped all acceptance of this material into the U.S. as evidenced in this portion of a recent article from Click here verified:
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. is blocking imports of wheat gluten from a company in China, acting after an investigation implicated the contaminated ingredient in the recent pet-food deaths of cats and dogs.
The Food and Drug Administration took action against wheat gluten from Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. in Wangdien, China, after the U.S. recall of nearly 100 brands of pet food made with the chemically contaminated ingredient. The pet food, tainted with the chemical melamine, apparently has resulted in kidney failure in an unknown number of animals across the country.
Wheat gluten from China has been suspected in the outbreak since the first of multiple recalls was announced in mid-March. Even more pet food could be recalled in the next few days, though there probably has been no contamination of human food, FDA officials said Monday.
Although Menu Foods refused to name the supplier in a recent press release, the release above names them as Xuzhou Anying Biologic Tenchnology Development Company in Wangdien, China.
My question: Why in the WORLD are we IMPORTING wheat when we are the largest grain producing country in the world? I’m sure many of you have the same question, and the only answer we can find is that we have slowly but surely wiped out the American farmer. In our greedy quest for land so that we can have more condos, homes and accommodate more people, we are wiping out one of our most important assets – the American farming community.
We have now switched to a food (that we highly recommend) called Click here, which uses only U.S. ingredients, is manufactured in the U.S., and is such a wonderful solution to the recent pet food recalls and import problem, that we’re recommending it to everyone we know. They guarantee their products 100% and will gladly back up any claims they need. We haven’t recommended it to one person who didn’t love it.
