It will cost an estimated $241,080 for a middle-income couple to raise a child born last year for 18 years, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report released Wednesday. That's up almost 3% from 2011. And that total does not include the cost of college. Add a state university such as Ohio State and the total goes up another $100,000. The emphasis is on middle-income because that $240,000 total is more than the average adjusted gross income of the entire bottom one-half of Americans over that span of 18 years, or 69 million tax filers. These numbers, of course, are chicken feed to the wealthy.
