THE SHINNING that is now showing on NETFLIX is 27 minutes shorter. Why? This is the European version that Stanley Kubrick edited down himself. He didn’t touch the USA version because it was being shown and word would get out that the movie was edited shorter ‘because of problems’.
Scenes cut-out or shortened are: the lady doctor, some touring of the hotel, watching TV, Halloran’s journey back to the hotel and all shots of the skeletons. If you’re a fan of The Shinning and also studying story editing, you’ll learn a lot by watching it on NetFlix from the beginning and seeing the impact the shorter version has on you. For me it was very positive, though I love the original version.
FUN NOTE: When Jack’s wife finds the ‘All work and no play’ papers, Kubrick filmed those papers in different languages all with idioms of that particular language, so the audience of each country could feel the same impact.
