First impression: A New Age Cookbook. Reality: a lyrical and descriptive tale of two friends in their forties who have entered an annual Quiche Bake-Off. One character asks, "Can their friendship survive the competition?". The book and each page is filled with detailed description of people, emotions, places, relationships and histories of entanglement in a sleepy French Canadian mill town of Beauchemains, Rhode Island. The native gal is Augusta who never knew her mother but found her recipe for a quiche. The other is Lindsey a journalist (and outsider) writing a history of the town.
Around the bake-off life goes on, sordid and shocking secrets are revealed and friendships tested. In the end, all gather for the holidays and the winner. Because of the revealing and "enlightening" moments, however the characters become stronger and strong together.
It's not a light or "cozy" read but it's thoroughly entertaining and well worth all the awards it has earned.
It's a great "winter evening by the fire" read - to enjoy - with a piece of quiche - Recipe included
