An Outsider’s Journey through American Nostalgia
As a reader from South Africa, Eva Pasco’s 100 WILD Mushrooms felt like stepping into a lively, detailed museum of 1960s America. Many references — cereals, brands, slang, and everyday cultural touchstones — were unfamiliar to me, yet Pasco writes with such warmth and vividness that I could still feel their meaning.
Her prose is sharp, witty, and richly nostalgic, filled with clever turns of phrase and affectionate snapshots of a bygone era. Even when I didn’t fully grasp a reference, the spirit of the decade came through clearly.
At times I wished for a bit more context for international readers, but that authenticity is part of the book’s charm. Ultimately, it’s an entertaining, intelligent, and heartfelt collection — a love letter to a very specific time and place.
