Exploring the Bible: Essays, Worksheets and Resources, Volumes 1 and 2 are available from Bible Teaching Press. Both are compilations of essays by Joan K. Snipes. Volume 1 is a 45-page booklet and is a compilation of material written in the first 17 issues of this e-newsletter. The information has been reorganized, slightly rewritten, and edited. A two-page table of contents makes finding specific information easy.
Volume 2 of Exploring the Bible: Essays, Worksheets and Resources, compiles three years worth of information that first appeared in my e-newsletters from December 2003 through October 2006.
A variety of topics are included in the second booklet, including: Jesus' reliance on the Hebrew Scriptures, Amos's plumbline, archaeology, mountains, biblical literacy, gift ideas, and the epistle by James. In addition to the essays, I have book reviews, the words to some fun Bible songs, and two Bible worksheets. I have also included web addresses for interesting Bible sites.
Both booklets are printed on 8 1/2 x 11 paper and bound in a simple folder. The cost is $10.00 per booklet or $15 for both volumes plus $2.00 shipping via first class mail for the first copy and $1.00 for each additional copy. Dear Friends,
Where do we turn when we feel afraid or confused?
What is the ultimate source book for character education?
How can we help children become courageous, hopeful, and thoughtful?
Aren't the answers in the Bible?
In the shadow of destruction and grief, perhaps now is the time to make familiarity with the Bible a priority. Below are some stories, with citations, that may be useful in helping children through this difficult time.
What Bible stories give us examples of courage? Daniel in the lions' den (Dan. 6:1-28); David fights Goliath (I Sam. 17:1-52); Nathan rebukes King David's sin (II Samuel 12:1-10); three Hebrews face a fiery furnace (Dan. 3:1-30); Ananias heals Saul (later known as Paul) (Acts 9:10-22); Esther saves her people.
What if you're feeling hopeless? What biblical examples are there for having hope? See the book of Jonah. For young children, review the story of Noah's ark (Gen. 7:1-24.) For older children who may be feeling depressed, look at Jesus' healing of the Gadarene (Luke 8:26 - 39.) At one point in his career, Elijah was desperately lonely and suicidal. The story of how Elijah's hope was restored is in I Kings 19:1-21.
What insights from the Bible can we get on happiness, living in harmony, and protection? The prodigal son found that money couldn't buy him joy (Luke 15:11-32.) Abram and Lot peaceably settled strife (Gen. 13:1-18.) The short story of a poor wise man who saved a city shows what a difference one individual can make (Ecclesiastes 9:13-18.) In a similar vein, read the story of the "wise woman" of Abel who saved her town from destruction (II Samuel 20:6-22.)
A helpful book for finding just the right Bible story to illustrate a point is: "Subject Guide to Bible Stories" by George Frederick Garland.
