TWO BOOKS BY LYNNE BUNDESEN

This fall I read two books that both enlightened me and touched my heart. I commend them to you. A friend and newsletter subscriber from McKinney, Texas also likes these books by Lynne Bundesen. What follows are two book reviews, written especially for this newsletter, by Debra Woodward.


"So the Woman Went Her Way: A personal journey" by Lynne Bundesen

More than an autobiography, Bundesen's account of her journey through good and bad times with the Bible as her companion, is an important work about how the Bible is relevant to each of us today. I read the book through in two sittings in two days. It captivated me from the first page of the prologue where she sits at a dinner in Santa Fe to the end where she writes of working out a recipe for bread. Her insights are a leaven of ideas and images from the Bible.

Bundesen's ability to cast aside common preconceptions about the Bible make this a must read for every woman and for every man who wishes to appreciate women today and women of the Bible more. The prologue sets the tone for a higher concept of womanhood, and this idea is as a golden thread throughout the book. Bundesen is unconventional, having learned the price of conservatism early in life.

I found that the borders of my tent were broadened and the cords lengthened, as I read the book. I thought more about what made me individual. I learned that God's lessons and blessings come in the simplest, everyday ways, even in making the perfect loaf of bread. I rediscovered that reading the Bible can change your life.

Perhaps the sense of wonder about Bundesen's book came partly because I was living in Santa Fe when I read it, but the things I learned will be with me forever. I still read it once in a while and find something new each time. Something that touches me in a different way than in my last reading. That seems to me to be the definition of a good book.

"The Woman's Guide to the Bible" by Lynne Bundesen

After years of writing a nationally syndicated column on Women and Religion, Bundesen has shared her lifelong study of the Bible from a woman's perspective with us in a book format. The first time Bible reader and the long-time student will benefit from her clear accounts of Bible events and stories. In easy-to-read language, she elucidates the importance of the roles of women in the Bible and dispels myths held by western culture about them. She isn't afraid to address the "rough places" of the Bible and asks us to think about them more carefully.

This book may be read through to gain a more balanced perspective, or it may be used as a reference guide. In it she quotes several translations of the Bible and suggests that the reader find the Bible translation that best fits them and read it daily. This book is a wonderful tool to help anyone searching for answers in the Bible to think "outside the box" and learn from what they read rather than from what they know.
