1. Time to be Creative

Paul Lemberg, author of Faster Than the Speed of Change, states: "All original thinking comes from being unreasonable. And that's where corporate USA gets it all wrong: Reasonable executives approach their plans and goals based on prior year's results. Trying to plan the future based on past results is foolish. Everything in our environment is in total flux. Why should this year's results be anything like last year's? Free yourself of history. Reinvent your situation and make it up from scratch."

If there was ever a time that the past cannot dictate the future projections for you and your organization, now is the time. Every week, new twists and turns add new obstacles and unseen opportunities to the world scene. Yet, the unreasonable mind has an advantage. Unreasonable people hate the boredom of using the past as a cookie-cutter frame for today's baking!

Be thinking big picture--"I'm not sure how or by what date the economy will bounce back, but I know it will!" When you know opportunities will come, you're looking for new open doors instead of complaining about the doors that have closed. Help your team focus on being vigilant for emerging opportunities that will help you and your team lead the charge back to winning results. As President Bush said in echoing the rallying cry of one of the brave, Flight 93 heroes, "Let's roll!"...and keep rolling as we take on the challenges that unreasonable minds know will be so satisfying to overcome. Years from now, we will all be able to say that we were there in the "good old days" at the turn of the century when Americans and their businesses turned around an evil attack and made it a platform for renewed vitality and focus.

"Conducting a Low-Cost Book Signing Tour and Getting Your Author to Think Like a Publisher" will be among the course offerings at the Publishers Marketing Association University May 1-2, 2002 in New York city. I will have the honor of being a panel member. This "university" precedes the national Book Expo America. We will be autographing From Book Signing to Best Seller: An Insider's Guide to Conducting a Successful Low-Cost Book Signing Tour after the session. Why not order an autographed copy for the writer on your holiday gift-giving list?

2. Time Out for Tranquility

Friday evening rush hour in Los Angeles is a bad scene. How is it in your area? Friday evening rush hour before a three-day weekend is the worst--stalls, stops, and frustration. On a recent Friday I was on the north side of LA and needed to get to the South Bay area. I waited until 7 p.m. to begin the journey, thinking the bulk of the traffic would have moved out by then. Most of the drive went smoothly, the 405 (Californians call their freeways, like Interstate 405, "the___) the 405 became a parking lot as it neared the Getty Center which looks down on the highway from a cliff high above. Cars stood shoulder to shoulder on the six-lane highway, crawling forward below a snail's pace. Luckily, I remembered an audiotape I'd pulled out of the trunk earlier and popped it into the player. Instant change! Opera marches played by the London Philharmonic conjured up visions of pomp and ceremony. Suddenly my white Mercury Topaz became a gilded coach and the trumpets were clearing the way. From insignificance to importance in a single solid stanza. It was amazing how the small opening in front of me became majestic--like it opened up just for me-- with a black Jaguar on one side, a champagne colored Mercedes on the other, a white pickup truck behind it, and so it went. Sure, we continued to inch along, but I relaxed as the music transformed my mood from extreme frustration to exuberance. The only things under my control in that sea of cars were my own thoughts and emotions.

What do you do to lift your spirits to a natural high? Do you have a ritual which brings you to a peaceful state of mind? How can you change your attitude in an instant from negative to positive? Perhaps meditating on a favorite quiet place or reflecting a happy time. One of my favorites is a photograph of a field of bluebonnets on a river bank, which provided an escape from extremely stressful times at my desk in the Pentagon.

Isn't it important that we control our attitudes? If we are always "done onto," it's easy to see ourselves as victims of circumstances. Why not choose to be happy and take charge of our own attitude!
