1. Raindrops and Relationships --by Peggy Tabor Millian [in Mary's Way]
====================================
I was on a train on a rainy day. The train was slowing down to pull into a station. For some reason, I became intent on watching the raindrops on the window. Two separate drops, pushed by the wind, merged into one for a moment and then divided again - each carried with it a part of the other. Simply by that momentary touching, neither was what it had been before. And as each one went on to touch other raindrops, it shared not only itself, but what it had gleaned from the other. I saw this metaphor many years ago and it is one of my most vivid memories. I realized then that we never touch people so lightly that we do not leave a trace. Our state of being matters on those around us so we need to become conscious of what we unintentionally share so we can learn to share with intention.

2. Can We Really Influence the Future? by Tom Grady
=======================================
On some level we believe that inspirational phrases like, "believe it and achieve it," "your altitude is determined by your attitude," and my favorite, "whether you think you can or think you can't, you’re right" can help us improve the way we live. Can having a positive attitude change the future? There is strong scientific evidence suggesting that we can influence the future by influencing the past. Time travel? Not quite, but close. What if time oscillates? The laws of physics (in our part of the universe) say that the time arrow has one direction, forward. The forward direction, however, is an overall direction, not necessarily an instantaneous direction. We could be going back and forward in time at a rate that we cannot perceive. We could continually re-experience past and future events that would appear to us as a continuous time line.
We would experience the future and then return to the past. Because this happens without our conscious knowledge, we cannot control the future, but we can influence the future. Our attitude, whether we think we can or can't, would influence the decisions we make. We can make decisions that increase our chances of success or we can make decisions that decrease our chances of success. Influencing our future is similar to changing the odds in Las Vegas. When gambling at a casino, the house only needs to have a 51% chance of winning to take all your money. If you gamble long enough, the casino wins. The same is true in life. Why not put the odds of success in your favor? Think positively.
What is the physical evidence that time oscillates? Einstein taught us that time and distance are not constant. Time slows as your speed increases. In physics, there is another experiment called the double slit experiment. The experiment sends light through two slits and records the effect on a target. The results of this experiment cannot be explained unless time oscillates. The experiment is done by most undergraduate physics classes.
On a deeper level, we can now know and believe, that "our altitude is determined by our attitude."

"Book tour: I have booked dates in September/October in ABQ, El Paso, Santa Barbara, Austin, Baltimore, and Philadelphia (some independents, some chain stores) all by myself by following your instructions. The CRM's have been great. And that's just the beginning.
Thank you so much for the consultation. What a valuable experience! I had no idea how much would come from it."

3. Response to Terrorism by Terry Paulson, Ph.D., CSP, CPAE

Excerpt from A MESSAGE OF MASTERY IN A CHANGING WORLD
Jerry Useem, in last November's issue of Business 2.0, made an observation that is worth remembering this week as we remember 9/11: "If this is the first war of the 21st century, then it was also the first war that was visited on the workplace. Home of the cubicle, the busted toner cartridge, and other 'Dilbert' plot conventions, the American office has long been trivialized as a sanctuary of the petty and banal. On September 11, however, it suddenly became anything but.... It wasn't until the next Monday, when the area around ground zero returned to economic life, that work took on a hue we rarely see. Asked what impelled
them to return to the job, people struck a common refrain: A sense of duty. A feeling that, well, they had a job to do, even if their job happened to be margins clerk at the metal futures desk. And the idea, heard especially on Wall Street, that a free market is the basis of a free people: 'The market is better than these people that did this to us….' Just as the rituals of democracy take on renewed meaning when we're under attack, so too do the rituals of capitalism, however, mundane. Behind all seemed to lurk some shared understanding that our work is not only important, but also ultimately the source of American muscle…. For a brief moment, the simple act of going to work seemed, somehow heroic."
(Source: Jerry Useem, "Back to Work", Business 2.0, Nov. 2001, p. 27-28)
We need to get back into making the great game of business work! We need to put our principles to work in order to make us and our economy even stronger. It is time for a renewed sense of duty. We need to make sure that with the innovative efforts of our organizations, the efforts of our leaders and our workers, that we enliven the very commerce that was attacked. May we use the memory of those who have fallen as a launching off pad for soaring even higher.
We will never forget. We must never stop making freedom and capitalism work!

"You read about all these terrorists--most of them came here legally, but they hung around on these expired visas, some for as long as 10-15 years. Now, compare that to Blockbuster; you are two days late with a video and those people are all over you. Let's put Blockbuster in charge of immigration."

4. Thoughts to Improve Your Presentations by Mike Wardinski, Ph.D.
==============================
Dr. Mardy Grothe's Chiastic Thoughts for the Week, provided by Dr. Mike Wardinski, Ph.D. On August 1, 1926, Israel Zangwill died in Midhurst, West Sussex, England. The son of immigrants, Zangwill grew up in London's East End. After graduating from the University of London, he became the most popular Jewish writer of his time. Through his many books (like "Children of the Ghetto" and "The King of Schnorrers"), he also introduced Jewish life and culture to a broader Gentile audience. Zangwill was also the author of the most famous metaphor to describe America. In his 1908 play, "The Melting Pot," he wrote, "America is God's crucible, the great melting pot where all the races of Europe are melting and reforming." Zangwill also became the most famous Zionist of his day, devoting his life to the cause of helping Jews return to their ancient homeland. In "Children of the Ghetto," he wrote: "Morality was made for man, not man for morality."
This is a common chiastic construction (X was made for Y, not Y for X). The first example I've found goes back to the Bible, where Jesus said, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath." Ever since, people have found the formula useful. I find having these type of thoughts and ideas handy whenever I have to hunt speech materials -- ideas to bring home or make a point.
Here a few more examples:
"The State is made for man, not man for the State."
-- Albert Einstein
"The Constitution was made for the people and not people for the Constitution." -- Theodore Roosevelt
Here are some of Dr. Mardy's own Chiastic thoughts:
"People think they make decisions, but the reverse is really the case. We don't make decisions, our decisions make us."
"A doer who doesn't think and a thinker who doesn't do are equally ineffective."
Dr. Michael Wardinski, Colonel, US Army, Retired, has been a mentor to Jo Condrill for a number of years. Mike also served as District Governor of Toastmasters District 36. He is very involved in church activities and The Retired Officers Association.
