1. CHOOSE YOUR WORDS
======================================================
Describe what you do in 25 words or less. Have you ever been challenged to reduce to a few words a multitude of thoughts and feelings? Recently, I've had opportunities to advertise our books and tapes in catalogs which would reach thousands of people. Choosing the most meaningful and powerful 25 words, or one sentence, seemed like an impossible task.
Business people and professional speakers are often challenged to present their message in 30-second sound bites. Sometimes this is referred to as your "elevator speech." Are you satisfied with the messages you are sending?
Take time to think of your purpose. Use simple, precise words. Write them down and then rewrite until you have a powerful statement that represents who you are and what you do. We often diminish the impact of our message by adding phrases like, "I think," "maybe," or "shouldn't we?" When we end our sentences with what sounds like a question, instead of dropping our voices at the period, we appear to be asking permission. While this was first deemed to be a habit of young women, it has been discovered that it is a failing in many men and mature women, as well. A tape recorder, used with discretion, can help you detect your own style. Record bits of conversation, play it back in private as a learning tool, then erase the tape.
Why not take a few minutes right now and write down a powerful message about yourself or your business? Then commit it to memory and you will be prepared next time an opportunity presents itself.

2. PARTICIPATE IN DECISION-MAKING
========================================================
At the end of each year most of us begin thinking of New Year's Resolutions and how we want our lives to change in the coming year. Something invariably intervenes and we never seem to quite get what we want. At the beginning of the year 2002, we will be offering a RETREAT and we'd like your help.
A RETREAT is stepping back away from a routine. It is going within and taking time to think, to plan, to refocus or to just relax and feel rejuvenated. It is two or three days set aside so that participants can relax, network, and feel revitalized! All of us need such times in our lives. A quiet time away from the routine; an energizing time of stretching muscle, mind, and spirit. A happy time of meeting people and forming lasting relationships. All of these come together for you in a well-planned retreat presented by a master meeting planner, Allegra Bowman, with Jo Condrill lining up the program.

Here's an opportunity for you to help plan this very exciting event. The first five who respond will receive a FREE copy of the hard cover book which was described by the president of the Association of Image Consultants International as "a masterpiece," A Millennium Primer: TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR LIFE! Everyone who responds will receive one of the very popular "DO NOT DISTURB--Thinking!" door-knob hangers.
Please take time to answer these few questions. This will help us fine-tune an agenda that will more surely satisfy most people.

Please complete the following and return it to me not later than July 9, 2001.

3. HEROES - HE RAN HALF WAY AROUND THE WORLD!
========================================================
In 1989, William M. Causey, Jr. gave me, a civilian woman, my first supervisory job with Army Headquarters in the Pentagon. He's been running ever since!

Not really, he was running even before then. Colonel Causey was one of those dedicated military officers who work long, intense hours. He, like most of the officers there, belonged to the Pentagon Officers Athletic Club, the POAC. Many arrived in the wee hours of the morning to run--along the Potomac River, across Memorial Bridge, around the Lincoln Memorial, along the mall to the Washington Monument, past the Jefferson Memorial, across the 14th Street Bridge crossing the Potomac, and back to work…after a shower, naturally. Of course the route varied, but the results were the same. As COL Causey said, "I have never had a problem that did not at least seem less significant after I finished a run."

COL Causey consistently kept a journal. He had hundreds of steno pads chronicling his years. They were often helpful in reconstructing things that had transpired for annual reports. Among the unclassified notes, he annotated the miles he ran. Recently he counted 12, 500 miles, equivalent to running half way around the world! He began keeping a daily record of his running in 1983, he said, and has kept an almost daily accounting since then. He credits his wife, Jennifer, with inspiring him to keep running since she walks every day.

Bill Causey, now retired from the military, has been an inspiration to many to stay physically fit. His constancy of purpose is commendable; his achievement remarkable!
His next goal? to finish the trip around the world "in much less than 18 years." Perhaps you'd like to send a congratulatory note to Colonel Causey.
