Welcome to those of you have recently joined us and welcome back to those of you who have been with us a while. It’s good to be back with you after a long, interesting, and restful summer. I hope you’ve enjoyed the summer and find renewed energy and enthusiasm as you go on with your everyday activities. As we move closer to 9/11—the second anniversary-- let’s reflect on our blessings and remember in prayer those who perished.

“If a speaker is indeed wise, she does not bid you to enter the house of her wisdom—but rather leads you to the threshold of your own.” --Kahlil Gibran

Real Simple magazine featured Jo Condrill as its “Wise Woman” in the June/July 2003 issue. Real Simple is a Time Warner magazine—circulation: 1,200,000. Copies may be available at your local library.

My favorite “wise woman” is Marilyn vos Savant who has a regular column, “Ask Marilyn,” in the Parade Magazine. Marilyn is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records Hall of Fame for “Highest IQ.” In the September 7 issue of Parade, one reader asked if Marilyn had ever tried to write a paragraph of 100 words without repeating a single word. “Amazing!” she said. Her challenge to readers: “Write a sensible 100-word paragraph without repeating any words, and send it to marilyn@parade.com. I will publish the one that sounds most like a normal paragraph,” she said. Good luck!

One of the keys to being successful in anything you do is persistence. Once you have determined exactly what it is you want to accomplish, you must take massive action on a consistent, persistent basis in order to succeed. Think of it like building a muscle. If you have never weight trained before, the first time you walk into a gym, chances are you will not be able to bench press 250 lbs. However, if you are persistent, and you consistently go back to the gym, you will find yourself getting stronger and closer to your goal with each and every visit.

One of the things you'll notice on your journey towards your goal, are roadblocks. That is, you will encounter obstacles that seem to jump out of nowhere in an attempt to halt your progress. Count on these obstacles. They are a part of life. Everyone would have every success they ever wanted if there were no obstacles. Your job is to be persistent and work through those obstacles. If you find little or no obstacles along the way, chances are you are not really challenging yourself. And when you do reach your goal, you won't experience the feeling of 'sweet success.' Make your goal a challenging one!

If you take the time to study any successful person, you will learn that the vast majority of them have had more 'failures' than they have had 'successes.' This is because successful people are persistent; the more they stumble and fall, the more they get right back up and get going again. On the other hand, people that don't get back up and try again, never reach success. For example, Walt Disney was turned down 302 times before he got financing for his dream of creating the "Happiest Place on Earth." Today, due to his persistence, millions of people have shared 'the joy of Disney.' Colonel Sanders spent two years driving across the United States looking for restaurants to buy his chicken recipe. He was turned down 1,009 times! How successful is Kentucky Fried Chicken today?

Having said this, keep in mind that you must constantly reevaluate your circumstances and the approach you are using to reach your goal. There is no sense in being persistent at something that you are doing incorrectly! Sometimes you have to modify your approach along the way. Every time you do something you learn from it, and therefore find a better way to do it the next time.

Today is the day to begin your journey, using consistency and persistency, towards tomorrow's successes!

2. Book Report
==========================
Have you read an eBook lately? Dan Poynter, the self-publishing expert, shared his excitement about the growing acceptance of eBooks, electronic books, as he held an eBook reader at a recent meeting of the Publishers Association of Los Angeles. It’s most convenient for reading when you use public transportation, like flights or commuting to and from work. You don’t need to sit in front of a computer screen to read your book. According to Dan, for the period January through May of 2003, eight Association of American Publishers member companies reported an aggregate eBook sales increase of 183% over the same period last year. One major advantage of eBooks is the possibility of linking to web pages. The expanding eBook market touches all our lives--readers, writers, and publishers. At GoalMinds.com we offer two downloadable products, From Book Signing to Best Seller and How to Form a MasterMind Group and they, too, have shown a significant increase in sales. Take Charge of Your Life will soon be available in eBook format. http://www.parapublishing.com http://www.goalminds.com

Project Gutenberg is the oldest producer of free e-books. They take books that are in the public domain, copyright pre-1923, and turn them into downloadable eBooks that can be copied, bound, and even sold. So far they have released 6,267 books. The Project accepts donations and volunteers. They are especially looking for help in proofreading—comparing the scanning output to the text. http://gutenberg.net

Diana Guerrero, founder and facilitator of the Alliance of Writers in Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead, CA., has a new book coming out soon, What Animals Can Teach Us About Spirituality: Inspiring Lessons from Wild and Tame Creatures. I had the pleasure of attending the writers’ meetings early in the summer, presenting From Book Signing to Best Seller, and signing books for the members.

Lynn Gardner, author of Rubies and Rebels, recently completed a two-week book signing tour in Utah and Idaho. Lynn has nine books published and is already working on the tenth!

Joni Wilson, with whom I shared a booth at Book Expo America, has just released a new audio tape series. The four tapes compliment her very successful books, the 3-Dimensional Voice and The 3-Dimensional Business Voice. The tapes offer exercises and special techniques for men, women, and youth. All are available on Amazon.com or through her website, http://www.joniwilsonvoice.com

Bob Erdmann, President of Columbine Communications & Publications, a publishing consultancy for more than four decades, will be representing two GoalMinds, Inc. books at the Frankfurt Book Fair in October. We’ve already had requests from publishers in Japan, China, Singapore, India, and other far-away places for review copies of 101 Ways to Improve Your Communication Skills Instantly and Take Charge of Your Life. Bob is one of the best organized and most effective consultants I know. If you are a small publisher or author who wants to expand your market overseas, find out more at http://www.bob-erdmann.com

A Millennium Primer: Take Charge of Your Life will soon be released in a revised second edition in paperback, Take Charge of Your Life, ISBN 0-9740970-0-4. Stephanie Edwards, Los Angeles radio and television personality said, “I think Jo is on to something! This is a great book.” Psychologists, engineers, actors, recent college graduates, and office workers who have attended the Learning Annex classes based on the book seem to agree. Their responses have been enthusiastic. If you’ve read A Millennium Primer, we’d like to have your comments. Please send a note to info@jocondrill.com

“In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flames by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.”
–Albert Schweitzer

3. On the Wings of Words
===================================
My encounter with one of those persons who rekindle the inner spirit came at a most unexpected time. Whenever I visit the Washington, DC area, I usually present an evening seminar at First Class, a Lifelong Learning Center near DuPont Circle. On one rainy day I arrived at the DuPont Circle Metro stop about 5:00 p.m. This station has the longest escalator in the world and it climbs from the basement to street level at a steep 45 degree angle. I had a large black leather briefcase in one hand and a bag of books in the other hand, hard cover, 208-page Millennium Primer books!

Hundreds of people moved toward the escalators like a giant bug bulging at the sides. I stepped onto the metal monster to begin the ride up. It didn’t move! I looked for the elevator—no way. There was a crush of people behind me. I shrugged and started up the stairs at a brisk pace. About a third of the way up, it seemed like something had attached itself to my heels and was slowing me down. After a while, I noticed that people were passing me! Just past midway I stopped, perspiration oozing out of every pore. I put down the briefcase and book bag and heaved one deep breath after another. That's when I saw the last set of feet disappear at the top of the escalator. At the bottom of the escalator there was a guard, and another mob of people. I was alone on the escalator. “The guard is going to restart the escalator,” I thought. What a relief! I picked up my things, slowly climbed a few more steps, stopped and looked back. The escalator still wasn’t moving. Then a youthful female voice floated up the escalator, "Go ahead! You can do it!" Like an echo, a chorus sounded, "You can do it!" Energy rushed through my body. That group shot life back into me and put a smile on my face, even though I was somewhat embarrassed. With those few words of encouragement, that young woman lifted me up the stairs and I was quickly on my way.

The POWER of communication! We often have opportunities to exercise our power of communication in a positive way--encouraging a coworker, appreciating a spouse, guiding a child. Be aware of the result of your words and enjoy those moments when you lift someone on the wings of words. http://www.takeaclass.org
