People want to make more money. That is a top priority as evidenced in the recent responses to the question I posed in December: “If you could corner me for fifteen minutes and have total unrestricted access to all of my practical experience, strategies and wisdom, what one question would you most want to have answered to take you and/or your life’s work to the next level?”

#2. There is a strong interest in writing and marketing books.

#3. People want to be better able to deal with daily challenges such as getting organized and overcoming procrastination.

The survey was followed by a telephone conference. “The quality of information was great. I loved hearing the real estate and book presentation stories. I'd definitely listen in if you can do this again,” Eddie Fiszer, Ph.D. author of “How Teachers Learn Best.”

As a result of this survey, a separate newsletter will be published devoted to writing and marketing books. Watch for the first edition. It will be announced on the website http://www.goalminds.com and in authorsden.com Send questions and articles to info@jocondrill.com

1. Small Press Month
=====================================
The Small Press Center and Publishers Marketing Association (PMA) have joined together to honor Small Press Month with their eighth annual month-long promotion of independent publishers. The theme for March 2004 is "Let Every Voice Be Heard! Support America's Independent Small Publishers." Independent book sellers and major chains are celebrating, too! With an estimated 70,000 independent publishers in the US, they are the real pulse of publishing. According to a recent survey by the Publishers Marketing Association, "Independent and smaller publishers in the aggregate have annual sales of between $29.4 billion and $34.3 billion- approximately 15% to 27% greater than the reported base for the entire publishing industry."
The 16th annual Small Press Book Fair will be held Saturday, March 27 and 28, at the Small Press Center, 20 West 44th Street in Manhattan, New York. Drawing enthusiastic crowds of up to 3,000 each year, the book fair is one of the main events held during Small Press Month and provides hundreds of independent publishers with an eclectic forum to display and sell their books and magazines. Admission is free. For information call 212-764-7021 or visit www.smallpress.org.

A Must Read
My friend, Bill Causey, who was once my boss, highly recommends The Traveler's Gift: Seven Decisions that Determine Personal Success, by Andy Andrews. It draws you in immediately with a story about a corporate executive who finds himself out of a job at a moment’s notice because of a hostile corporate takeover. Inspirational and informative.

Space is still available for the Mega Book Marketing University featuring Mark Victor Hansen, Robert Allen, and Tom Antion in Atlanta, March 26-28. For more information to go http://www.kickstartcart.com/app/aftrack.asp?AFID=117962

2. Out With Those Banished Words! --Nancy Wiggins
===================================================
Each year since 1976, tiny Lake Superior State University (Sault Ste. Marie, MI) has been compiling its annual list of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Mis-Use, Over-Use and General Uselessness. This year's words and phrases were carefully selected from more than 5,000 nominations originating from everyday speech as well as news, education, technology, advertising, politics and more.
With the Iraq War dominating the scene and journalists challenged to fill 24-hour news coverage, there were naturally several contributions from the media including "embedded journalist" (How about just "at the scene?"), "smoking gun" ("Hard evidence" would suffice.), "shock and awe" (Is "shock and awe" laundry detergent next?), "captured alive" (People aren't really captured dead.) and "in harm's way" (Who is Harm?).
Here are some of our favorites from the 2004 list that will be familiar to those in business and marketing:
• Place Stamp Here. Nominators ask if we can really consider ourselves a super power if the populace needs reminded to put a stamp on an envelope.
• LOL. This is nominated as representative of all e-mail speak including the symbol @ when used in advertising and other communications.
• X A close companion to last year's "extreme," it's the core of a PR-powered phenomenon used for everything from the Generation-X demographic to X-files, Xtreme and Windows XP. X-it already.
And then there's our overall favorite, "companion animals," previously known as pets.
For the complete List of Banished words or to nominate a word or phase for next year, visit www.lssu.edu/banished. You're sure to be "shocked and awed."

3. Gracious Acceptance Under Fire
=================================
Formulating a vision and setting goals are challenging enough. Bringing other people into your confidence, seeking support, may call new skills into play. As you tell people about your vision and goals, it is important that you listen to their ideas. Sometimes it is wise to modify your thinking to get their agreement. Their contributions might be time, energy, money, or other resources. Unless you consider their comments, you run the risk of losing their support.

Some people may thoughtlessly laugh at your ideas. When you get ridicule in response, don’t feel embarrassed. Quietly take a deep breath. Decide to recommit to your goals and accept feedback even in these painful moments. You might reply, “What I hear you saying is that you don’t believe that I can do this. I can understand why you might think that way and I want to assure you that I have thought this through. I have considered the obstacles and risks and looked for potential solutions. I’m committed to working it out over time. Your input is valuable to me.”

Continue to show your enthusiasm; it is contagious and conveys the depth of your own commitment. Remember, it is the fire inside of you that is going to light sparks in others!

To evaluate your listening style and see how it affects your overall communication skills, use our Listening Profile, developed by Inscape Publications. It is estimated that people screen out or misunderstand the intended meaning or purpose of a message in over 70 percent of communications, making listening the biggest contributing factor to miscommunication. The Personal Listening Profile helps individuals identify their preferred listening style and understand how they can adopt other approaches when appropriate. Ultimately, this profile is designed to help people accept interpersonal differences and adopt behavioral strategies that foster considerate, collaborative, and effective relationships. You may order the profile now and get the 20% discount. Please call 1 800 697-5680. The Profile can be ordered from our website beginning April 1, 2003. After your order is received, you will be sent an access code so that you may complete the Profile in privacy. The results are strictly confidential. Coaching is available.

Identity Theft? I have been receiving returned, undeliverable mail, which I have not sent out. AOL advises that this is probably caused by the virus called MY DOOM. A computer that has my email address on it has been infected with the virus. The virus is not on my computer. Please scan your computers with the latest anti-virus scan to check and remove any viruses. Thank you. This newsletter is sent by authorsden.com.
