Reader writes:
Your story of a shortcut to Istanbul (June 2005) brought a
smile to me. I lived in Turkey for a year as a Fulbright
scholar, and took many 'shortcuts' in that time while I
traveled throughout the country. In that time I stumbled
across Greek and Roman ruins that weren't on the map, met
villagers who always offered me a glass of tea, and many
people who invited me into their homes for a meal.

I've had the opportunity to travel extensively, and I'm so
often struck by the importance of learning about others as
an important part of learning about oneself.

Happy the man, and happy he alone,
He who can call today his own.

1. Recess
============================================
Congress does it; Pope Benedict XVI does it. Why don’t you
take a recess? If you are an entrepreneur, it’s very
difficult to let go, recess, and take a vacation.
Even if you have a 'regular job' with paid vacation time, it
may be difficult to “get away from it all.' We tend to take
'it' --the cell phone--the laptop computer--business reading
files--with us. There is always more to be done.

Yet, we function better when we can take a recess. From his
vacation home in Les Combes, Italy, as reported July 17,
2005, on www.leint.org, the Pope recommended a holiday
program which 'predisposes the heart to receive more
easily...the light of Truth and practice it in freedom and
love.' So what does the Pope do all day? He walks for two
hours, receives visitors, and writes.
Congressmen and women go home to visit with their
constituents or far-flung places around the globe to take in
information and for some time to take a break in routine
government matters.

Maybe a vacation is not in this year’s budget for you. Why not
take a mini-vacation. Figure out how far you can get from where
you are in two hours in all directions. Then find interesting
things to do close to home that will not require an
overnight stay. Here in San Antonio there are art museums
Sea World, Fiesta Texas, parks and swimming pools that
are free to the public and historic places to visit, such as
the Alamo. The Gulf of Mexico with sandy beaches and
fishing boats is only a three-hour drive. The object is to
get away from your work routine and enjoy life with family,
friends, or alone. Clear away the concentration and concern
for a while. You may be surprised at how much more
productive you are when you return to work!

It’s time for recess!

2. When is Learning Effortless? by Eddie Fiszer, Ed.D.
=============================================
As we focus on the approaching school year, one very important
question comes to mind. In answering that question we learn lessons
applicable to all of us.

Why is it often a struggle to get children to study? Part of
it has to do with the modeling they receive from peers,
adults, and the media. Movies and television, particularly
commercials, glorify the idea that people will be happier
when they buy the latest products or are engaging in non-
academic 'fun.' Yet the reality is that many families
find reading, writing, and studying to be enjoyable.
Visiting museums and historical sites are examples of family
activities that inspire further discussion and research.

Families who go against examples found in the media and
choose to model studying as pleasurable make a deep
impression on children.

Dr. Csikszentmihalyi is a professor at Claremont University
who has written extensively about how adults and children
experience a state called 'flow.' In his books 'Flow: The
Psychology of Optimal Experience' and 'Good Business:
Leadership, Flow and the Making of Meaning,' he
describes the state of flow as one where there is deep
concentration on the task at hand which alters the
individual's perception of time. This is often experienced
when reading a good book, connecting a jigsaw puzzle, or
participating in a hobby - time flies and you forget oneself
because you are so immersed in the activity.

How can flow be fostered in young people? An increasing
level of challenge and use of skills needs to be present
along with feedback. The individual needs to sense
improvement and the invigorating challenge of increasing
levels of complexity.

To encourage effortless learning show excellence is pursued
by family members to the point that learning is pleasurable
and, in fact, a hobby. Such modeling matters, draws children
to the activity or to imitate the activity, is memorable,
and fosters curiosity as well as a love of continual
learning.

Dr. Fiszer is principal of Pinetree Community School in Santa
Clarita, CA. His recently published book, 'Daily Positives:
Inspiring Greatness in The Next Generation,' is filled with
wisdom and insight from those who have successfully done the
'impossible.' It would be an excellent addition to your
bookshelf. http://www.fiszerconcepts.com
