1. Knowing Me, Knowing You? By Bill Nelson

===========================================

In this day and age when you, as leader yell, 'Charge!' And
run into battle, the chances are you are going to end up
looking like Wile. E. Coyote after the Road Runner has
finished with him: singe marks on your ears, gunpowder all
over your face and stars and little birdies flying around
your head!

Just because you yell 'Charge!' Doesn't mean others are
going to follow your lead and that call to arms.

Although leadership is a lot about the position you hold, it
also very much about the person you are.

The person you are will show the people you lead how you
will treat and deal with them. And how you deal with them
will have a huge influence on how effective your leadership
will be.

Really knowing and understanding the people you lead is a
significant aspect of effective leadership.

- Knowing their wants and needs

- Knowing their goals and aspirations

- Knowing their circles of influence

- Knowing their motivators

- Knowing their de-motivators

- Knowing their likes and dislikes

- Knowing their energy cycles

All of this and so much more can come about without asking
them one single question. It can all be gained from your
observations and levels of awareness.

A lot of this is at the micro-level, but what about at the
macro level? What differences exist within the people you
lead that can and will influence who they are, what they do,
and how they do it?

This macro level of understanding is another level that you
as a leader need to know, and know well.

What are the differences between:

- Male and Female

- Young and Old

- Experienced and Inexperienced

- Front Office and Back Office

- Baby Boomers v Generation X v Generation Y

- Morning people v Evening people

- Leaders v Followers

- Doers v Thinkers

- Talkers v Listeners

- Individuals v Team Players

- Strategic v Unstructured?

Once again, I have no doubt that to a certain degree you are
asking yourself, 'How far do I go with my levels of
understanding and insight?'

And once again my answer is in the form of a two-part
question:-

'How good do you want to become as a leader and how good do
you want those you lead to become?'

The more you know about those you lead the more effective
you will become as a leader.

I know we have gone through this subject of awareness and
understanding previously.

However, I strongly believe this to be one of the keys to
effective relationships and therefore, vital to the
development of you as a leader and to the development of the
people you lead.

It becomes a two-pronged attack. In one way totally
opposed, but on the other side there is synergy.

On one side you are The Teacher, you are The Leader, you are
The Coach: You help people see opportunity; you teach people
skill; you provide them with experience; you increase their
ability and their confidence.

But on the other side, you are The Student: the student of
the people you lead.

They teach you about how they think, what they believe, why
they do the things they do, and where their levels of
confidence and belief are at.

They will show you what they are going to do in the future,
by what they have done in the past.

You will take them forward and do a great job simply by what
you know. However, you will take them a lot further and a
lot higher when you know them.

The Journey Continues!

2. The Missing Ingredient: Determination, by Annette Bass

=======================================

Taking charge...some do; some don't; some settle.

Are you where you want to be in your career and your
personal life? Do you feel like your efforts go unnoticed,
uncompensated or are unappreciated? Would you like a raise,
but they haven't offered you one? Would you like more time
off, but there isn't anyone who can replace you while you
are gone? Are you alright with that, or do you want more?
Is there nothing higher to reach for? Is it just too hard
to imagine what it would be like to jump out of your
comfortable nest and test your wings? The unknown can be
frightening!

It comes down to choices and determination. Take these two
people for example. One has determination and the other
does not. They both started out with the exact same
circumstances. They are brother and sister. They have the
same parents and have been given the same opportunities but
have made vastly different choices about what they want out
of life. As a result they now have vastly different lives.
Alex and Amber were born into a far less than ideal family.
Their father was an alcoholic and their mother is a bi-polar
drug addict who is presently serving time in prison. Their
family was continually being evicted. They moved 13 times
and Alex and Amber attended 11 different schools before they
were in high school. Both of them witnessed the unspeakable
behaviors of both parents. Both of them were in the car the
night their mother fled Nevada to avoid a warrant only to be
picked up in Utah where she was caught and sent to jail.
Both of them learned daily survival. One of them wanted
more, and the other one perpetuated the life she had always
known.

Amber is 18 years old and is enrolled in her senior year in
high school. She is in danger of being expelled for non-
attendance and other behaviors. She is content to live life
in her trailer with her boyfriend who enjoys drugs and the
partying lifestyle as much as she does. All she seems to
want out of life is 'the freedom to take time off' whenever
she feels like it.

Her 16 year old brother, Alex, is poles apart from her. He
is determined to have a better life. He has decided he can
count on nobody but himself - so he refuses to let himself
down. He sets goals and reaches them even though people
around him doubt him. He is a 4.0 student, a captain of his
city league soccer team, a member of the varsity golf team,
does Ju-Jit-Su, is going out for track, and is on target to
be battalion commander of the Junior Reserve Officer
Training Corp (JROTC) next year, his senior year in high
school.

The difference between these two is not nature, nurture, or
opportunity. The difference is choice and determination.

Can you look back at the choices you've made along the way
and see the results in your life? There is no need for
regret if you are not satisfied with the choices you have
made. You have an opportunity to decide now to change
direction or adjust segments of your life to achieve the
goals you strive to reach. Decide now and stay the course.
Determination will get you where you want to be.

If you want to take charge of your life, determine what it
is you want and take the next step.

3. Build a Foundation for Assertive Speaking, Part I, by Dr. Dilip
Abayasekara, Ph.D., A.S.

============================================

Have you had a verbal encounter in which you faired poorly?
Have you sometimes wished that you had spoken more
assertively in a particular situation? Well, here is a way
that you can build a foundation for speaking assertively so
that the next time the wind of criticism blows or the rain
of negativity falls upon you when you know you are in the
right, your house of self-respect will stand firm and
unscathed.

The first thing that we have to clarify is the difference
between aggressiveness and assertiveness. In the context of
this discussion, aggressiveness relates to taking the
offense, attacking some idea, object, group, or person.
Assertiveness relates to being firm, bold, and maintaining
one's self-respect, refusing to cower in the face of an
attack. An aggressive attitude seeks to attack; an
assertive attitude seeks to stand firm and achieve a desired
end. An aggressor does not necessarily care about showing
respect to the person, group, or idea being attacked. An
assertive person refuses to let his or her self-respect be
trampled upon but is not interested in insulting the
aggressor. Assertion implies controlled firmness but
aggression does not imply a degree of control in the attack.

Assertiveness is cultivated within you before you show it on
the outside. Assertiveness is really an attitude toward
something or someone; when you value, respect, or love
someone or something, you will not let that person or thing
be trashed. For example, consider your family. It is
unlikely that you will stand idly by if someone disparages
your family. If you lose your temper in the defense of your
family, that is not assertive behavior; that is loss of
emotional control. But if you are firm and controlled, that
expression of assertive behavior is the result of an inner
attitude, which you carry within. So, in order to be
assertive about anything, you must have strong feelings
about it. As I've noted before, your thoughts are the
springboard for your actions. 'You become what you think
about,' said Earl Nightingale in his classic recording
titled, The Strangest Secret.

The wellspring of assertiveness is self-confidence, self-
respect, and a sense of responsibility. Strong
self-confidence and self-respect will not allow anyone to
run over the people, ideas, or things you value without
receiving a firm and clear response from you. However,
there are occasions when you might let an attack slide to a
certain point. When you have a strong sense of
responsibility for something, it will be very difficult for
you to keep quiet and not be assertive in its defense. If
you think you are not assertive enough, it is usually
because of a lack of self-confidence or lack of information
or knowledge about the matter at hand, or not having a sense
of responsibility to the object of the discussion. So
everything you do to build your self- confidence,
self-respect, and sense of responsibility will ultimately
make you a more assertive person.

It is your sense of settled purpose that often wins over the
opposition.
