1. Work Stress: Techniques to Reduce Work-Related Stress
By: Terry Dunn

===========================================

Many surveys and studies confirm that work pressures and
fears are, by far, the leading source of stress for adults
in the western world. Here are just a few statistics. More than 50% of workers often spend 12-hour-days on work related duties and frequently skip lunch due to the stress of job demands.

According to an International Labour Organisation study, workers put in an equivalent of an extra 40-hour week in the year 2000, compared with 10 years earlier.

It's estimated that one million workers are absent every day due to stress. 40% of job turnover is due to stress. And 60-80% of accidents on the job is stress related.

Job related stress is more likely to become chronic because it's such a large part of your daily life.

What are the causes of stress at work?

The most common complaints include,

· Having no participation in decisions that affect your
responsibilities.

· Unrelenting or unreasonable demands for performance.

· Lack of communication.

· Conflicts between workers or employers.

· Lack of job security.

· Long hours.

· Excessive time spent away from home and family.

· Office politics.

· Wages not equal to your levels of responsibility.

Many companies often put intense pressure on employees to perform, which can lead to high levels of tension.

For employers, treating stress has many benefits. In one
study a company set up a two year stress management and education program which saved money both in compensation costs and less days lost due to sickness.

In Japan, where culturally, expectation levels are very
high, approaches to reducing workplace stress include educational consultation programs for each individual worker.

Techniques to reduce work-related stress

Here are a few ways to reduce your stress at work,

· Find a sympathetic manager or personnel manager to talk
to about your job stress concerns. This can be
effective if it's non-confrontational.

· Establish a network of friends at work and home.

· Re-structure your working day and priorities to
eliminate unnecessary tasks.

· Focus on the positive aspects of your work, but if the
job is unendurable, plan and execute a career change or
transfer roles within the company.

· Schedule pleasant activities frequently and perhaps some
physical exercise during lunch.

There is one last cause of stress at work. And it slowly
but effectively erodes your health, dreams and happiness.
None of the stress relief techniques will help if you are in the wrong job or industry. There is only one answer to this.

You have to work out what you want to do with your life.
What activities you love. And you have to plan a career change. Stress caused by job dissatisfaction will never go away until you get a job you love, or at least like.

2. Break The Law Of Inertia And Take The First Step To
Start A Business
By: Kevin Riley

=======================================

You'd like to start your own business, you'd like to get out
of the mind-numbing job, you'd like to leave the corporate
rat race. But, starting your own business is a very
daunting enterprise. Looking into the future, it looks like
a long, dark tunnel with no light at the end.

Confucius said, 'A journey of a thousand leagues begins with
a single step.' Taking that first step is the most
difficult thing to do. It means beating the Law of Inertia.

== Two Laws That Affect Your Success ==

The Law of Inertia states that a body at rest tends to
remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. Your life responds to the same laws and if you don't break the inertia, and take that first step, you'll be stuck right where you are. Without taking that first step you'll be forever stuck in that boring job, you'll never start a business.

The good news is that your life is also governed by the Law
of Momentum -- it states that a body in motion tends to
remain in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.
Once you take that first step and set your business
enterprise into motion, you're well on the way to success.

== Success Comes To Those Who Dare ==

Success never comes to those who wish and pray for it, it
only comes to those who reach out and grab it. Successful people make a decision to do something, then they begin moving toward the goal they have set. They start down that long, dark tunnel knowing that the light of success lies at the end.

The British SAS has the motto, 'Who dares wins.' Successful people don't let fear of the unknown stop them, they don't cling to the false security of a job, they are willing to face the uncertainty and step into the tunnel.

== Just Do It ==

This one act of successful people separates them from the failures. The ability to launch themselves into an enterprise without any guarantee of success is the one thing that leads to success. A 12-year university study concluded that virtually all success was based on the ability to 'Just do it!'

The interesting thing is that as you move down the tunnel, opportunities appear to you along the way. These opportunities would never have been available to you if you had stayed at the mouth of the tunnel -- afraid to take that first step.

== Taking That First Step ==

Successful business people choose their target, aim, and
fire without hesitation. Determine what your goal is, make
a plan for reaching that goal, then get moving toward that goal. Do something every day to take you closer to that goal.

The minute you start moving toward your goal, the Law of Momentum makes it much easier to continue making progress as you start a business, launch a new project, or set a campaign in motion. Just keep moving toward your goal and your success will follow.

== Let Momentum Carry You To Success ==

Don't spend forever planning. Just take that first step
into the tunnel. Get the momentum going. Before you know
it, that momentum will carry you to success and you will
have a business that allows you to say 'Sayonara' to that enslaving nine to five job.

Just do it! Article Source: http://articlesaboutbooks.com

3. Build a Foundation for Assertive Speaking, Part 2,
By Dr. Dilip Abayasekara, Ph.D., A.S.

(Continued from February's edition of 'Take Charge Success
Strategies')

============================================

An assertive person knows that he/she does not have to be disagreeable to be assertive. The ultimate in assertion was beautifully verbally illustrated by Theodore Roosevelt when he said, 'Speak softly and carry a big stick.' Your assertive communication is successful because the listener knows that you know what you are talking about, that you have a clear and deep-seated resolve to achieve a certain end, that you will not let your self-respect be trampled, and that you have no desire to hurt the other party.

There is a time and a place for asserting oneself The writer
of Ecclesiastes said, 'There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven...' (Holy Bible, Ecclesiastes 3:1). So it is with assertive communication. If you assert yourself too often, the effectiveness of your assertion will wear off. Choose wisely when and where to assert yourself. Some things are not high enough of a priority for you to get your dander up.

Assertiveness works best when these five factors are present
in you:

(a) Authenticity - You speak from your heart, guided by your mind. You speak with integrity and genuineness.

(b) Authority - You command others attention because of an internal authority that you are able to project.

(c) Knowledge - You know what you are speaking about, and
you know it well.

(d) Understanding - You understand the motivations and the reasons of the other party.

(e) Commitment - You are committed to your point of view;
you put yourself on the line.

There you are - the five building blocks for effective assertive communication. Cultivate them and you will build a firm foundation for steady and effective communication under fire. Whether you win or lose the argument, you will always earn the respect of those who oppose your point of view.
