"HAPPY VETERANS DAY!"

November 11, is the day set aside in the US to thank and
honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in
wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely
intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to
acknowledge that their contributions to our national
security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that
all those who served - not only those who died - have
sacrificed and done their duty.

Are you ready to survive a computer hard drive crash?

On Wednesday, October 31, at 2:00 PM PDT, I will interview
Paul Waggoner on "5 Easy Ways to Backup, Protect, and Secure
Your Valuable Data Using the Tools You Already Have." Most
importantly, all money for this live event will be donated
to the American Red Cross to help the fire victims.

Before the fires in Southern California , I had been plagued
with computer problems, having two hard drive crashes within
weeks of each other. As I was setting about how to make
something like this happening in the future less stressful
and time consuming, the fire started in Malibu and all of
the succeeding fires we had in Southern California.

Although the winds have finally died down, the firestorms in
Southern California are still affecting thousands of lives.
10 major fires, 500,000 people evacuated, 1,800 homes
destroyed. It's a good time to think about what YOUR life
would be like if a natural disaster struck your home or
business. Would your data be safe? Could you take it with
you quickly?

I contacted a friend of mine, Paul Wagoner, who helps
thousands of people with their contact and data management.
Since the subject of backups often comes up, he has
developed solutions over the years to help businesses. Now,
to help both you and the fire victims, we've gone one step
further by offering a teleseminar solely on backups.

Not all systems are as dependable as you may think,
regardless of how long they have been serving you in the
past. In all the years I've been in business, this is the
first time I have had a hard drive crash.

Some systems appear "cushy" and stable. But you just might
be sitting on a time bomb. Fires. Earthquakes. Theft. Hard
Drive Crashes. How do you know your data is safe?

Find out how simple it is to backup, protect, and secure
your valuable business data so you are never put in the same
situation as many of the fire victims of Southern
California. You'll be helping others and gain greater safety
for yourself, all at the same time.

2. Five Success Strategies by Jim Whelan

==============================================

1. You either get better or you get worse. Status quo is not
an option.

It's the life cycle of any organization. We see it in the
news every day. Companies like Microsoft and Yahoo and Nike
are constantly looking for ways to remain on top by better
serving their customers. They recognize that the opposite of
growth is decline, and the way to growth is to determine
what will be relevant in the future and take action now.

2. The world is coming to an end. Children no longer obey
their parents and every man wants to write a book.

This quote from an Assyrian stone tablet of 2800 B.C.
reminds us that there are certain immutable beliefs that
remain true throughout time. Similarly, there are certain
immutable strategies for success that are applicable today
as from thousands of years ago. Despite what we were told
about the "new economy" of the dot.com era, successful
companies, nonprofits and associations become successful
because they: "Visualize the future - Take the time to think
about what's ahead." Establish a plan - - This is the best
predictor of whether or not a business will grow. "Look at
the world around them, both inside and outside - Recognize and
adapt to fundamental changes in the marketplace and business
processes." Concentrate on the outcome - Focus on the results.

3. Due to the lack of trumpeters, the end of the world has
been postponed for three weeks.

I saw this sign posted on the wall of a congressional
staffer who was working under the pressure of a very tight
deadline with a minimum of help. For this staffer, the
postponement was probably wishful thinking. The deadline
wasn't moving, so she had to. Don't postpone defining the
paths to success. The time to get moving is always now. When
you see the storm clouds on the horizon, it's too late. Act
before the storm hits.

4. You Have a Choice: Plow New Ground or Let the Weeds Grow

Amazingly, in this time of nonstop transformation and
technological opportunity, I continue to see clients who are
still mired in the "we've always done it this way," or, "it
worked for years, why change now?" Syndrome. Don't get me
wrong - that kind of thinking brings me business. Turning that
kind of thinking around for business owners struggling to
grow profits or to stop the red ink from flowing brings me
great satisfaction.

You do have a choice. Choose a new approach, a new plan, a
new process, a new idea. It's the best form of
"weed - be - gone" I've ever seen.

5. Never give in, never give in, never, never, never

Winston Churchill was right; persistence pays.

3. Saying "Thank You"
================================================

Thanksgiving Day comes once a year in the U.S., but every
day there are people in our lives who deserve our thanks.
Sometimes a simple "Thank you" is appropriate. At other
times, it is more thoughtful to be creative in expressing
appreciation. It's just good business.

Here are some suggestions for thanking people at work, at
home, and in the community.

1. When you say "Thank you" tell the person specifically
what it is you appreciate and why you appreciate it. "Thank
you for being in the military so I don't have to be." "Thank
you for serving our country in uniform so we can enjoy
freedom from fear."

2. Send an e - mail note. When I sent a thank you note to my
staff in the Pentagon, the energy level shot way up.

3. Send a hand - written thank you note. These are especially
appreciated because so few of us take time to write and mail
notes.

4. Place an unexpected phone call just to say "Thank you."
Connecting verbally adds warmth to your appreciation even if
you reach voice mail.

5. Present a small certificate. Half - page certificates take
up less space if displayed and are as meaningful as full
sized certificates. They tend to draw attention because they
are different. If you have kids, let them draw a thank you
card.

6. Give a single flower from your garden, flowerpot, or
florist, with a verbal "Thank you" or a note.

7. Put a candy bar or piece of fruit on the desk of the
person to be thanked, with or without a note. (Be sure the
person is not on vacation!)

8. Bake some cookies. Ask the volunteers at a military
hospital if they would accept and distribute this gift.

9. Say something nice about the recipient of your thanks to
someone else when the person you appreciate can overhear
you. This is especially powerful in a business setting.

10. For special occasions, present a US flag that has flown
over the Capitol. It is a unique, reasonably priced item
which few people own. A certificate of authenticity is
provided in honor of any special occasion you designate. Ask
them to leave God in the citation. Call the office of your
congressman or congtresswoman for the flag. If you don't
have a local contact, call 202 224 - 3121 and ask for your
Representative by name. When you reach that person's office,
ask to purchase a flag. They'll know what to do!
