AN OLYMPICS STORY by Thomas C. Almond

My wife and I will be in Vancouver, BC in Feb. of 2010 for part of the Winter Olympics.
We have some tickets for some Ice hockey games.
So what does Olympic hockey have to do with Goodbye Kiev you ask?
Perhaps this excerpt from Goodbye Kiev will help explain.
“I had other interest in learning Russian too, Hockey. During my childhood
I grew up watching, breathing, eating, and playing hockey. For some reason
my interest was more to international hockey rather than the NHL and the
World Ice Hockey Championships always took precedence over the
Stanley Cup playoffs with me. During my childhood the Soviet Union was the
dominant country in international hockey competition.
Unfortunately all during my childhood the United States and the Soviet
Union had this Cold War thing going on. So I had a lot of interest in the Soviet
Union and the country these great hockey players and teams came from but
there was very little opportunity to learn about the Soviet Union and even less
of a chance to go there. This played a big role in my taking a couple trips to
Sweden during my years in the military. Sweden was the third best hockey
country after the Soviet Union and communist Czechoslovakia and my best
chance to see high quality international competition.”
My interest in international hockey has never really waned. I still follow the “Swedish Elitseries” on the Internet as well as World Championship Tournaments.
