Nothing I can say here will be as interesting as my books. I have lived virtually everything described in them, except for the spirit rituals in Brazil. Those are kind of hairy, and while my husband and I lived there we never once considered attending one session. They are usually set in dangerous locations and perilous to blatant newcomers. I researched those rituals in Portuguese. Although I know a lot of spells to cast, I haven't dared use any of them to persuade an editor to buy.
Newsletter Dated: 6/9/2003 7:22:51 PMSubject: Breaking Rocks After 17 years peddling my books I was still, foolishly, optimistic that my novels would yet sell to a traditional publisher. They were so close, but missed. The fact that The Snake Woman of Ipanema, The Year of the Rat, Journey from Shanghai, are darned good stories and Journey received a spectacular review from bestselling author Charlotte Vale Allen, doesn't seem to have broken the ice for them. They are selling well on the big booksellers' Websites, carry five-star ratings by readers below, but that big break is still below the horizon.
For this reason I have put aside Stone of Heaven, which is a sequel to Journey from Shanghai. When I make that break, I will polish Stone of Heaven. My short stories, essays (a couple of them political, a couple of them humor/satire), poetry, children's fiction and features, have done well. At least I have that.
