Nothing I can say here will be as interesting as my books. I have lived virtually everything described in them, except for the spirit rituals in Brazil. Those are kind of hairy, and while my husband and I lived there we never once considered attending one session. They are usually set in dangerous locations and perilous to blatant newcomers. I researched those rituals in Portuguese. Although I know a lot of spells to cast, I haven't dared use any of them to persuade an editor to buy. I followed a friend's truck on 16 miles of dogleg switchbacks and thought I was never going to make it home. At the end of the trail I couldn't tell what color my car or myself was. Adventures are fine, but I must have been crazy this time. But -- I sold a short story! and must have been out of my head temporarily, celebrating. "Plateaus of Parana" will appear in the next TRAVELERS TALES anthology titled Hyenas Laughed at Me, and Now I Know Why." (!) I knew that one day I'd live to tell that story about flying in a single-engine Cessna with a madman. He had the goggles, the white silk scarf, the whole bit. I should have stayed on the ground.
