Now onto today's topic: Being your own artist. I hope you find it helpful in your search to lead a creative life.

You needn't attempt to be a professional artist, or even to produce something you can show to other people. The point is, by getting actively involved with one of the fine arts, you take a critical step toward living a more creative life.

Here's what your music, writing, singing, dancing, painting, photogrpahy, perfomance art, or speech-making, drawing, chanting, or meditations on beauty allow:

1. You liberate yourself from "adult" constraints and return to your primal sense of fun.

You can choose to throw order and tidiness, rules and restricitons out the window and let your soul speak more clearly to you. You can abandon decorum, and give in to your authentic creative impulses, however unlinear they are. In short, FUN can rule.

2. You see from different perspectives.

When you create your own work, you see things differently. You realize there are myriad ways to draw an object or play a piece of music---colors, sizes, shapes, densities---all can become different in ways which you choose.

3. You explore your fantasies, daydreams, and visions.

By doing your own art you release the 'Secret Creator Within'. The colors, the sounds, the feel of the material connect deeply with you on several levels. Ideas arise, new fantasies, daydreams and visions become available.

4. You define your OWN style.

When you start planning your painting, your sculpture or photograph, you realize that you're making the rules. Want to sculpt 3 noses or a trapezoidal house, no one can so no to you.

5. You relax and eliminate stress.

Art can often be more relaxing than pursuits like reading or watching television. Through the process of making art, your mind clears itself of worries, and you surrender to the enjoyment of your work.

You get all of these benefits and more.

Art is a wonderful way of working out vexing problems and dealing with deep emotions like grief. Creative breakthroughs, when released, give you a new perspective on all of your life. You see more clearly, you feel more deeply, your body is more in tune with the world and your intelligence is fully engaged.

I just know you have an art waiting to explode in you. A sense of 'newness' that you can touch and use.
