Note from Carolyn
Dear Subscribers:
I know I recently did a newsletter promotion, but I just met a talented, smart, and giving woman on Twitter who has a Web site with lots of good stuff for writers on it (Isn’t networking wonderful?).
Shelley Hitz has a neat (short!) e - white paper called “Get Published With No Upfront Costs! 7 Things Publishing Companies Don’t Want You to Know About Self Publishing.” She’s letting me offer it to you if you recommend this Sharing with Writers newsletter to one of your fellow writers and they give you permission to subscribe them. You know the drill from last time:
1. Rave about Sharing with Writers newsletter to your friends.
2. If they bite, send their e - mail address to me at HoJoNews@aol.com. Put SUBSCRIBE: Free 7 Things White Paper in the subject line.
3. Paste their e - mail address in the body of the e - mail.
4. I’ll subscribe them and send you both The Self - Publishing Coach’s white paper.
Then, if you’re at all interested in self publishing anything—from your next novel to a promotional e - book—you’ll go to her site and poke around a bit. Maybe sign up for her newsletter, too.
I hope this doesn’t seem too repetitious to you. It is a new opportunity, after all. It is the New Year and a great time to get enthusiastic. And, one must take advantage of these opportunites as they arise.
Best,
Happy Writing, Editing and Promoting
Carolyn
PS: Special thanks to Dawn Colclasure for a wonderful review of my Great Little Last - Minute Editing Tips for Writers: The Ultimate Frugal Booklet for Avoiding Word Trippers and Crafting Gatekeeper - Perfect Copy. If you write reviews as a marketing tool, you’ll want to see how she reviews a book in detail without giving away any of its secrets. http://writedmc.livejournal.com/3369.html
PPS: Author Rich Moser wrote to tell me that I had a broken link in the last SharingwithWriters newsletter. It leads to the blog post that outlines the last promotion I did for this newsletter by offering a white paper on using Amazon’s features. Anyway, here’s the link again:
http://sharingwithwriters.blogspot.com/2010/11/free - amazon - secrets - in - return - for - favor.html
If it (or any other link in this newsletter or in other places) comes up broken, look to see if the full link came up in your browser window. Sometimes links break at one of the hyphens. Or just go back and copy and then paste the entire link into your browser window. I could shorten links but it would take a good deal more time and sometimes the shortened links get scrambled, too!
PPPS:Here’s a special tip, repeated from a past issue. I know it is needed because I received an e - mail from one of my subscribers who assumed he needed to send his book in several segments to get it through. This is a f r ^ ^ service you can use to send large files and documents: www.sendthisfile.com.

Carolyn,
Every day I find something else to be REALLY angry about with my publisher - - like the fact that Kirkus Reviews, Publisher's Weekly and other industry "standard" reviews must be submitted three months prior to the release date. And the total cost to the publisher - - two galley proofs. Did they bother to send in the proofs? No, of course not. Moreover, they didn't tell me about this deadline either; I would have been happy to have done the work, but I didn't know that it needed to be done. Now that the book has been published (full of editing errors that the proofreaders inserted and the publisher never bothered to check), it's too late to get any of the reviews.
I wonder how publishers make any money at all - - they appear to be nothing but clowns.
It seems so simple to me - - empower your authors and they will make money for you. But if you can't even be bothered to let the author know that some of the biggest reviewers require a copy three months prior to the release date, then how can even the most motivated author do anything at all? Such a waste of time and effort. I spent years researching my topic and now I can't even get Publisher's Weekly or Kirkus Reviews to look at me - - all because my publisher is lazy and doesn't care.
I'm sure you hear this often enough. I just pray that you are right and I can still recover despite all the obstacles my publisher has set in front of me.

QUESTION:
Hello Carolyn, how are you? I'm doing GREAT on this end. I still Love your book The Frugal Book Promoter. I haven't gotten the Frugal Editor yet, which leads me to my question. In your professional opinion, do you believe that a person can SUCCESSFULLY publish a book without getting a professional editor? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks for your time and assistance.
~ Billie Miller
ANSWER:
You can do a darn good job of publishing a book on your own without an editor IF you're willing to tackle that huge learning curve. And you’re willing to take the pains to utilize lots of fellow readers as readers. But it will still not be as polished as you probably hope for. Great editors, formatters, indexers, etc. take years to learn their craft and they just keep learning. So, if you want a book that is professional and credible with folks in the publishing industry, it's best to get that second pair of experienced eyes. The Frugal Editor (www.budurl.com/TheFrugalEditor ) tells you how to hire a good one and will help you know when you HAVE a good one. It will help you partner with an editor that will do a good job for you. I encourage you to try to find such a person. There are no bargains out there when it comes to great editing. I have reedited books for authors in the past and know the challenges in finding an editor who does more than correct typos and grammar errors. Hope this helps.

My most recent book about a crazed and harrowing 1,200 - mile trek my wife and I recently took across eight countries in the Alps (see link below for details) recently received a review in Library Journal. I was surprised, especially since one this takes the concept of schadenfreud to a whole new level. Over the Top & Back Again: Hiking X the Alps was only our second book reviewed by them. (But two outta four isn't bad.)
In part, they said, "This lighthearted hiking narrative reflects the positives of such an experience: overcoming hardship, laughing at their inability to find trail blazes, Europe's apparent fear of switchbacks on trails ascending 1000 - plus meters per col, and the bond and struggle with your trail partner. Another celebration of simply putting one foot in front of the other with everything you need on your back and faith in the trail ahead.… Recommended for armchair ravelers and anyone interested in hiking the Alps." ~ Library Journal
This was a small success along the journey. Now, if only my feet would return to their normal size! For a look at the book, please visit: http://www.pilgrimstales.com/overthetopandbackagain.html .

Determined to stay with her beloved mistress, Belle sets out to master the difficult obstacles on the agility course to teach her discipline. To succeed, she must learn to follow commands and overcome her fear of the horrible teeter totter obstacle. Worse, she must work with Big Toby, a human who once tormented her.
Belle’s Trial is a sequel to Belle’s Star, the story of Belle’s arrival in Darcy’s life, and the love that grew between them. Most of us this last year found it hard to stay positive in this crazy world that seemed intent on bringing us all to our knees. In fact, for the last few years whichever way we turned there were people hurting. Fortunately as writers and authors, we should keep in mind how beneficial it is to others to use our words for healing and recovery. A good example of this is when we remember the words of the Little Red Caboose saying “I think I can, I think I can, I know I can,” as he chugged up the hill? Creative expression is good medicine to both the reader and the writer. I think writers and authors like to start the year feeling like we’ve brightened the world of our readers.
I am convinced there are so many people in pain right now, most probably, you are among them, I’ve decided to follow my own instincts and construct a Web site and an interactive blog at http://www.healingwords.vpweb.com/default.html.
If you know more people who could benefit from my new, Healing Words for Recovery Blog, feel free (no, feel required!) to share this with them! The Wilco Project is a mystery/thriller published by Solstice Publishing (http://SolsticePublishing.com) where it also claimed the #10 overall Bestseller rank for the entire catalog of 51,000 eBooks.
How did a little known author's first novel, released by a small publisher, climb the top of bestseller list? Springer says, "I think it is all about the story," said Springer. "My book is timely as it involves a fictional game played on a device similar to the iPhone and the Droid that are taking over the cell phone world. The entire story takes place in a span of about 48 hours, so it moves fast. The cell phone game concept in the book sounds fun, but the readers find out quickly that the game is also quite deadly."

Dangers of Google’s E - book Open Policies

QUESTION
I have my books on Kindle, but I hesitate to put them out on Google books . . . and the Author's Den also has an e - publishing app that sounds appealing. My question to you is...aren't you a little bit concerned about people downloading the stuff without paying anyone once it gets out on the Internet in so many e - venues. I feel comfortable that Amazon will protect its product, but not sure about putting my books on other e - sources.
What is your feeling about this?
Cheers
Linda Ballou, travel writer and novelist
ANSWER
No. I’m not worried. I give so much of my stuff away f r ^ ^ anyway. It's one of the major ways I promote. So, if things of mine get swiped (as long as they are attributed), it's not a huge concern. It will happen anyway. You might want to review the chapter on plagiarism in The Frugal Book Promoter (www.budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo). It addresses many of the numbing fears we have. It doesn’t specifically address re - use of e - books, but the idea is similar. It boils down to this: I mostly want my stuff read.
But, also, yes! My book is searchable on Google. People search it like crazy. I guess they are looking up answers to specific marketing questions. Few buy it. Sure, that kind of ticks me off. Especially when many of them have to be authors and have to understand that it is a courtesy to buy books. That we can’t expect others to buy our books if we don’t buy the ones we need and, maybe, a few others. The buy vs. search rate at Google is much higher for my novel. This leads me to assume that authors are using my how - to books to get their questions answered without ever popping for a copy.
Back to the NO. In spite of those Google searchers, my writing books sell well. So.....I figure that the ones who are too cheap to buy a book won't buy one anyway. They'll just search somebody else's books. And maybe they mention my book and someone else who knows more about The Golden Rule buys them. D’ya think?

Question:
Dear Carolyn,
I followed your directions in your blogging book, as you had advised me, and I was able to create a blog on Gmail account. I gave it the name Shades of Culture, that is the name of women's club that my friend and I have created. Now i think I need another one for my personal use. You gave me the idea of starting a blog, but I am not sure how it will benefit me. I am in the middle of writing our newsletter for the holidays. I was thinking to post it there. I am not exactly sure what to do with a blog or maybe I can post my memoirs and each time I have a new entry I can send the link to my email list and tell them
about my new entry.
Catherine Yesayan
Answer:
You are on the right track. The book you have, Your Blog, Your Business (www.budurl.com/Blogging4Retailers) gives you lots of ideas of things to blog about. You just need to adapt them to your writing/political life. You may also want to read (it's free with signup) the article I wrote with Phyllis Zimbler Miller, http://www.fictionmarketing.com/ It is specifically for writers. With a title like the one you have selected, you can write about most anything. Politics, your memoir. Even excerpts from your book. Be sure to include a note at the end of each post telling people to watch for the book when it comes out.
And why not your post newsletter if you wish? Maybe include in the newsletter some of the things that Iranian immigrants do to celebrate Christmas. That stays with your "culture" theme.
It benefits you to brand your name long before you have a book. Do know that you need to encourage friends, relatives and other writers to subscribe and visit your blog. If you're on Facebook or another social network, post about your new blog posts. That's all in copy of Your Blog, Your Business. It's pretty complete. ( - :

Valentine Poetry and Anti - Consumerism

Contributed by my poetry partner Magdalena Ball
Yes, it's just around the corner, and yes, I'm going through a rather anti - consumerism phase that coincides with the secret greenie novel I'm just completing (though I'm always happy about consumerism that involves my own books - same too I think for authors of anti - consumer books! May as well be honest about it.) and with the completion of my Marketing degree (I'll never go to the dark side, even if the cookies are good). But I will say that a) greeting cards tend to be ridiculously over - priced and mostly get thrown out, and b) good poetry lasts, has a transformative effect, and basically is wonderful value however you look at it. Especially when it comes in such a pretty, and inexpensive package (with such beautiful artwork - Vicki Thomas is a star). So to appease my super fantastic marketing partner, and also to offer something just a wee bit better than artery clogging chocolates, or landfill clogging cards, I thought I'd reprint a review of the book of love poetry I wrote with Carolyn Howard - Johnson. Free e - books for the first 3 people who email me at maggie_ball@bigpond.com and ask for one. Happy Valentine's Day all you lovers out there.

A general marketing rule is that a product must be seen seven times before it is purchased. That is just as true for books (because they are products, like it or not!). Let people see that book cover image! To do that, you are invited to advertise as a site sponsor at www.howtodoitfrugally.com/advertising.htm for only $35 a year. Yep, the frugal way! An Itty - Bitty Column on Writing
How to KINDLE a Book
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
By Mindy Phillips Lawrence
You have a manuscript that you have painfully and lovingly edited (hopefully, with professional help) and you want to convert it into a Kindle Edition. Put on your patience persona and let’s begin.
Getting Started
1. ESTABLISH AN ACCOUNT: First, register at Amazon.Com or sign in with your existing Amazon account information. Choose a user name and password that you place in a folder somewhere, either a virtual folder or a real one. You don’t want to forget this information!
2. READ THE CONTENT GUIDELINES: These tell you what Amazon accepts and what it doesn’t. http://forums.kindledirectpublishing.com/kdpforums/entry.jspa?externalID=122&categoryID=27
3. READ THE SIMPLIFIED GUIDE TO PUBLISHING A KINDLE BOOK that you’ll find here: http://forums.kindledirectpublishing.com/kdpforums/entry.jspa?externalID=553&categoryID=7 . Make sure you have a current e - mail address so Amazon can communicate with you about your book.
4. If there is any question about copyright on the material, READ THE COPYRIGHT GUIDELINES as well at: http://forums.kindledirectpublishing.com/kdpforums/entry.jspa?externalID=123&categoryID=27
FORMATTING
1. Read the Formatting for Beginners: http://forums.kindledirectpublishing.com/kdpforums/kbcategory.jspa?categoryID=10 . If you scratch your head at ALL, get help. This is your work and you want it to be published correctly and professionally.
2. Read about Photos and Illustrations: http://kindlewizard.com/tag/put - photos - on - kindle/ . This information tells you a bit about preparing images for viewing on Kindle. Remember that Kindle images will appear in GREYSCALE. Your color photos for NOOKS will appear in color.
3. You might want to look at this video about publishing on a Kindle: http://forums.kindledirectpublishing.com/kdpforums/entry.jspa?externalID=362&categoryID=2 .
Again, if you are not confident about doing this for yourself, please seek help. Many people know how to do this well. Paying them for their knowledge and assistance is much better than having a botched or substandard Kindle book.
You have a NOOK, you say? Well, I’ve included information for NOOKists below as well.
Happy publishing!

Amazon Kindle Lets Book Buyers Lend Books!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Based on past experience, I can hear some of my subscribers virtually groaning. Many will see this as a way to sidestep their chance to collect more royalties!
Stop it! Right now!
This is a program designed to help you sell more books, not fewer! Amazon is letting your readers recommend your book—easily! By keeping the loan period short, Amazon has actually rigged the program for authors so that many who get a book loaned to them will go back and buy it for themselves. I mean, Kindle editions aren’t expensive, right? And we all know that word - of - mouth sells books. Now, if a reader of your Kindle edition lends your book, you’ll have two mouths out there working for you.
If you want to read the announcement directly from Amazon and get the link to Amazon’s FAQs on this program go to

From Carolyn’s Coming Memoir/NotACookbook
Here’s How I Don’t Cook
An excerpt from a chapter that harkens back to my husband and my dating days.
I think about the days when, if I'd offer to cook, Lance would say, How about El Charro. It wasn't a question. He knew the answer. But it wasn't always so. I used to surprise him. It is perhaps our second date. I am trailing after him–all of my eighteen - year - old self–up the stairs of the Tribune where we worked. He needs to check on the night ads before we go to a movie.
What's your favorite album, he asks.
I can only think of Ferde Grofé and the single "I'm My Own Grandpa" from my childhood. Dad plays the piano. Our family doesn't spend much money on albums and I none at all. I think fast. A friend has just introduced me to some Hawaiian sounds. I have never heard anything like them before.
Martin Denny, I say.
For a while, I thought I'd never live that down. Now he never mentions it.
On maybe my best memory is our fourth date, he asks me what my favorite drink is. What could I say, Milk? I had been to a fraternity party. They served a pinkish drink that didn't burn going down.
Sloe Gin, I say.
Hey, I was raised in Utah. Drinking isn't a big pastime there. I think sloe is slow and means it won't make you drunk very fast, especially since it tastes more like punch. Lance at least knows it has a reputation of speak easies and hard kick.
One of these days, I'll insist on cooking. That will surprise him. Actually, I guess what I'd really like is a little attention. Just about any little bit apart from a session in the bedroom would do.

Watch for my memoir (Here's How I Don't Cook), now being shopped by super - agent Terrie Wolf. And keep your fingers crossed for her success. Please!
