and Sharing with Writers Subscribers

In the spirit of the advice I give in the Frugal Editor - - that is to use an extra pair of eyes whenever possible - - this newsletter is voluntarily copyedited by Mindy Phillips Lawrence ~ mplcreative1@aol.com ~ www.freewebs.com/mplcreative. I also tell writers to be patient with other writers when they make editing booboos. We're all human. This letter comes out every other week (except when I'm traveling or on deadline) and it's so long it easily keeps you busy for a couple of weeks!

Note from Carolyn

Dear Subscribers:

Last week I talked about the little waves publicity makes and how they come back to you, lots of times without even trying. It’s like putting something out into the universe and letting the energy do the work for you. So, as if by magic, along comes this honor from VeryBestSites.com

(http://www.verybestsites.com/best - indie - publishing - websites/)

for my Web site (www.howtodoitfrugally.com) where I stow tons of helpful lists, articles and tips for writers. So this comes as a big thank you to the folks who make these decisions—who they are is a bit of a mystery to me at this moment. It’s a reminder to you that if you’re promoting and not using my site and the others that they mention on this page and that I mention every single issue in this newsletter, you are losing out on some great resources!

Happy Writing, Editing and Promoting
Carolyn

PS: Shelley Hitz has a blog/podcast tour going beginning April 11. I know you’ll want to learn all you can from the blogs featuring podcasts—each one on a different aspect of blogging. It’s an amazing new approach to an online tour, too, so pay attention to the way she’s structured it with a different podcast at each tour stop. http://www.self - publishing - coach.com/guest - blogging - success.html

PPS: You won’t receive another newsletter until June. I’ll be in India and the Mideast, providing my trip doesn’t get cancelled.

Special Notice: Many of you know that the power of people to do harm to others on the Web is something that bothers me. A lot. There is a difference between disagreeing and smearing. There is a campaign to impugn the reputation of Allbooks Review International, a professional review and author promo company since 2000, by a new review company that is neither professional nor honest. Allbooks Review is asking any author who has had a good relationship with Allbooks to post a short comment on Facebook, Twitter or other Internet media sites. Being professionals, they will not name this company, however they will counter these unjustified attacks with honest, forthright comments from real authors. Allbooks Review International thanks the thousands of authors that have worked with us over the years, we appreciate you. www.allbooksreviewint.com

Tip: LA Times reported on the marketing Mark Zuckerberg’s dad (father of the famous founder of Facebook) did for his dental practice. He did something we authors could borrow and adapt: He offered a free teeth bleaching kit to the first ten patients (they would already have been his friends on Facebook) when they told their Facebook friends that they “stopped by his office.” He was basically asking for a blurb or endorsement. What a way to get something viral going. What do you want from your FB friends? What could you offer them that they’d want?

The New York Times Begins to Charge for Online Access
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. announced that The New York Times introduced digital subscriptions. He says, “It’s an important step that we hope you will see as an investment in The Times, one that will strengthen our ability to provide high - quality journalism to readers around the world and on any platform. The change will primarily affect those who are heavy consumers of the content on our Web site and on mobile applications.”

I’ve started my writing career as a journalist and I believe that freedom of speech coupled with strong teams of journalists keep the USA and other nations with free speech policies strong—and honest. Though there is a temptation to want what we’ve been getting f r ^ ^, there is a danger in being shortsighted. It is hard to see our precious f r ^ ^ access limited but I believe those of us who use resources, like the Times, do not want to see what it offers deteriorate. We all know that the world of journalism is changing.

Sulzberg explains, “If you are a home delivery subscriber of The New York Times, you will continue to have full and free access to our news, information, opinion and the rest of our rich offerings on your computer, smartphone, and tablet. International Herald Tribune subscribers will also receive free access to NYTimes.com. If you are not a home delivery subscriber, you will have free access up to a defined reading limit [twenty articles a month]. If you exceed that limit, you will be asked to become a digital subscriber.

Your Reviews: Crediting and Credibility
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
QUESTION:
I’m paraphrasing from a note sent to me by Mindy Lawrence: An editor posted a statement saying that most of the edits she made for a particular author were not accepted. She discovered that the person had two self - published works out and decided this was probably the first time this writer had gone through a serious editing process.

ANSWER:

I think it is very dangerous to generalize like this. I have a client who is a real newbie but is also very talented. He is completely unpublished and still manages to be the ideal client. This author seems to have absorbed lots of the reading he does and he reads good stuff. And he is very open to edits. Maybe because I am very careful to explain WHY, but also because he is eager to learn something rather than defend his expertise.

Anyway, generalizing (applying of labels) almost always gets us into trouble. Having said that, it is so important for writers—new ones and ones that have been around a long time—to continue to learn more. That is one reason that in The Frugal Editor (www.budurl.com/TheFrugalEditor), I include information on how to hire a great editor and how to partner with him or her once you begin paying for the service.

Notice that “partner” word? The more a writer knows about editing, the better he or she can tell when they have a good editor. Knowledge is empowering. The more a writer knows about editing (and other aspects of writing like voice), the easier it is to know whether to accept or reject an editor’s suggestions.

I give my clients guidelines upfront: They should decline my edits when they feel they must, but only when they are able to verbalize the reasons for not accepting them. And those reasons should usually consist of something more than "I just like it (or don't like it) that way."

BTW, the client I am lauding here refuses some of my suggestions. And I usually agree with his choice, once he has explained why. Editing should be a two - way street for learning.

Over the Top & Back Again, Hiking the Alps by Brandon Wilson is about a challenging country hike from Trieste to Monaco on the Via Alpina. It was named a Book of the Year Finalist (travel essay) by ForeWord Reviews http://www.bookoftheyearawards.com/finalists/2010/ . It's an inspired, slightly crazed look at hiking cross the Alps and at a couple who follow their gonzo dream. More information is available at http://www.pilgrimstales.com .

An Itty - Bitty Column on Writing

The Wonder of Transition
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
By Mindy Phillips Lawrence

The Only thing that’s constant is CHANGE. ~ Heraclitus

Everything I own is in a box somewhere hidden from view and from access. The only reason I found my laptop is that I left it in the trunk of my car during my move. I have no Internet connection at home right now so I am doing my Itty Bitty from that bastion of higher learning, McDonald’s. It’s cozy and has darn decent fries.

Change is good. It shakes up the way we normally conduct our business and gives us an opportunity to pursue a different direction - - or continue an old one with new fervor. Even unpacking boxes becomes an adventure (I found my older son’s artwork from when he was twelve).

The flipside to CHANGE is STAGNATION. No one likes that idea. It reminds me of a pool of water that’s been sitting under something with no sunshine. Eeeuuuw. I can smell it from here. I’d rather be moving water that gurgles, churns, and stays fresh.

One NEW desire this move has brought back is my desire to edit. I’ve strapped my “editorasaurus” gear back on and am even offering a little monthly post on editing do’s and don’ts (see: “Word Hippie: MAY and MIGHT” at soon at www.thefrugaleditor.blogspot.com ). I’m also paying more attention to “Copyediting - L,” a listserv for professional copyeditors.

Change has also awakened my desire to do more reviewing of new nonfiction works. I’ve begun to check publishing company sites again for their lists of upcoming releases.

Come change with me. Think of constructive ways to do what you’ve been doing but with a new twist. Maybe you need a new way to keep your records or a new perspective on the book you are writing. You don’t have to make the move from hell to get motivated.

Tip: Do you know how to make one of those flowery little scam - designs you’ve been seeing around work for your book? Here’s how straight from Tony Eldridge’s blog. I’ve reworked my Web site. Please use the huge Resources for Writers section http://www.howtodoitfrugally.com/links_for_writers.htm. And please let me know if you find broken links. I need your help! =================================================

TIP: I’m changing my recommendation for the Twitter app for unfollowing folks who don’t follow you back. The new one is www.justunfollow.com. My student Jamie Schaffner recommended this new one to me (see how much we can learn from our students!). It is much faster and simpler to use than www.friendorfollow.com. The only thing I don’t like about it is that there is a limit of 100 people you can unfollow in one sitting, but that shouldn’t be a problem if you keep up with your unfollows. And why should you unfollow? To clear out those who use Twitter only to market, never to network or learn.

No part of this newsletter is paid advertising. If you would like to advertise to subscribers, display ads are available at http://www.howtodoitfrugally.com/advertising.htm at less per year than most sites charge for a single month. Find classified there, too.
=================================================

EditingTip: Among the tips on editing query letters I give authors in The Frugal Editor (www.budurl.com/TheFrugalEditor) is to avoid comparing your book to other books, especially powerhouse books like the classics or bestsellers. That authors should do this cutsie comparison is bad advice that never seems to lose ground on the Web. Agents and acquisition editors hate it; it usually sounds overblown and the comparisons are usually far from accurate and can’t be validated or confirmed until the book is sold and does become another John Grisham courtroom drama. And, yes, this is an editing tip. Editing is more than finding typo and/or grammar errors.

Tech: LA Times reports Facebook is trying to control SPAM. Don't click on single URLs sent by "people you know!" They say, “Spammers make money by driving people to sites that pay them for clicks.” But worse, they can also infect your computer. (BTW, you know this publicity rule I keep nagging about, but this is one reason many editors won’t open attachments and why you shouldn’t attach your articles or media kits or anything else when you’re contacting them unless they invite or request you to do so.)

How to Create a Facebook Link

By Joan Stewart

You've written a fabulous status update for your Facebook Fan Page, and you want to share the link on other social media sites, or in your newsletter.

But you don't want to give people the URL to the fan page, and then force them to hunt for the status update on the Wall. What do you do?

You share the unique link for the status update, of course. But Facebook doesn't make it easy to find unless you know where to look.

Simply click on the time stamp below the status update. It might say something like "9 hours ago" or "Saturday at 8:52am."

After you click, go to the browser window, and cut and paste the link.

That's an opportunity a lot of Facebook page administrators don't know about. Learn about a dozen others in the replay of the webinar "12 More Ways to Avoid Missed Opportunities on the New & Improved Facebook."

Carolyn’s Coming Memoir

Here’s How I Don’t Cook © ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~This recipe and birthday wish is from Coca Cola. It is a great recipe and, because my father was the manager of a Coke company in Utah and I am such a Coke fan, I’m thinking of adding a chapter to Here’s How I Don’t Cook using this recipe! BTW, Subscribers! How could you use this marketing device? Think about a food scene or ingredient in your book. Put it in a recipe that you send to friends and readers year round as a book promotion. Here is more on that idea on my blog: http://sharingwithwriters.blogspot.com/2011/04/coke - cake - marketing - birthdays - and - your.html

Watch for my memoir (Here's How I Don't Cook), now being shopped by super - agent Terrie Wolf (www.AKALiteraryLLC.com). And keep your fingers crossed for her success. Please!
