Note from Carolyn
Dear Subscribers:
I’m a little late with this issue of Sharing with Writers this week. Sometimes that’s a good thing. Now it can include this announcement:
Maggie Ball and I just received news that the newest chapbook in our Celebration Series is up on Amazon.
Deeper Into the Pond: A Celebration of Femininity is proudly self - published, a precedent set long ago by poets everywhere in the world. Only now the process is much faster. We used Createspace and it was faster than it has ever been before! It took only eight days from the day it was submitted to the day we received our paperback copies and saw it appear on Amazon’s page where it is available in paperback at www.budurl.com/DeeperPond for only $6.95. The low price is part of our using - chapbooks - as - greeting - cards idea.
Imagine the possibilities for publishing promotion material.
Learn more about our greeting card/chapbook concept at www.howtodoitfrugally.com/more_on_deeper_into_the_pond.htm.
You can also get it as an e - book directly from Createspace at https://www.createspace.com/3608866
Happy Writing, Editing and Promoting
Carolyn
PS: Maggie and I would love to have you review our booklet on Amazon and, perhaps, on your blog. Please consider it! Send me an e - mail with DEEPER INTO THE POND in the subject line and I’ll send you an e - copy. I know women will love this book, but so will men!
PPS: Forgot to mention that Jacquie Schmall won our cover art contest for this chapbook. Don’t you think it is gor—gee—ous? (In order to see the images in this newsletter, you must use the link to access the pdf file.)

Needing something more meaningful for the celebrations in your life? Something that stays within your budget? Check out Cherished Pulse (www.budurl.com/CherishedPulse) ($6.95) for someone you love. Try Imagining the Future: Ruminations on Fathers and Other Masculine Apparitions for the men in your life. Sure, they like fusses made over them, too! (www.budurl.com/Imagining) ($6.95). She Wore Emerald Then (www.budurl.com/MotherChapbook) ($12.95), for mothers and other women, and Blooming Red (www.budurl.com/BloomingRed ), to use as Christmas cards or incidental holiday gifts. Plan next Christmas early. And ask about my special price on chapbook/cards purchased in bulk! All these chapbooks are from the Celebration Series of poetry from Magdalena Ball and me.

In the News: Amazon is introducing a new kink in its business model. Recently they instituted a Kindle lending policy which was covered in this newsletter. Now they are launching a college textbook rental program. It appears they want to be bookstore to the world but also lending library to the world.
I could see many benefits to their Kindle lending policy, both to the author and to the publisher. As far as the lending of textbooks, go, I see only benefits for students. None for authors or publishers. It does seem to be a nice, passive income for textbook publishers—one that requires little or no expense for distribution and materials. But at what loss compared to actual sales? Am I missing something?
Oh, and by the way. Amazon will let students keep highlighted material and notes they make on their borrowed copy in Amazon’s cloud indefinitely. As I say, no downside at all for students. And—because of that—I’m glad to see it happen.

Tip: I know that sometimes we just forget to type a subject into our e - mail windows, but tons of phishing and spam are going around and many of them have nothing in the window (or just have “RE:” in the window.). Many of these addresses have been stolen (hacked) and they are familiar to me. They are fake distress calls that a friend (remember, you think it is someone you know because of the e - mail address!) has been stranded in Timbuktu and needs money wired. If they have no subject line, I won’t open them. And you shouldn’t either. So, if you want your e - mails read, put something in the subject window that can easily be identified as coming from YOU.

Please paste this little blurb - - perhaps with a little endorsement - - in your newsletter or Web site: To subscribe to Sharing with Writers send an e - mail with SUBSCRIBE in the subject line to HoJoNews@aol.com or go to www.howtodoitfrugally.com for an auto subscribe box. Let me know you did it so I can do something similar for you on my Resources for Readers page at www.howtodoitfrugally.com.

A Little Humor: I love Peanuts, even now Schultz the elder is gone. I especially love them when Charles M. does the Snoopy - at - a - typewriter scripts. Here’s one that tickled my funny bone. (I’d scan it for you but there is such a thing as copyright law! Ahem!)
So, Snoopy is busy typing up a storm and Lucy interrupts (don’t you love it when people do that?!). She says, “I’ve been reading Thomas Wolfe’s You Can’t Go Home Again.”
Then she says, “Maybe you should write something like that.” Snoopy pauses to think.
Finally Snoopy starts to type again. He types, “You Can Go Home Again if You Want To.”
I guess the moral is, don’t give me or Snoopy any dumb ideas for stuff we couldn’t possibly do anyway!

The book has received strong reviews from Dan Rather; Michael Blake, the Oscar® - winning scriptwriter of Dances With Wolves; and Heidi Prescott, senior VP of the Humane Society of the United States; and Profs. Editing Tip: Euphemisms can be deadly for writing. They evade rather than communicate. They can also desensitize us to concepts we may be better off recognizing full force. On the other hand, they can lighten language, push it out of the humdrum into something more humorous or more colloquial. The trick is to be aware of when you’re using them and how. “Love handles,” anyone?

Free Posters and Glimpse at Book Cover Artist’s Talents
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
My friend (and the designer of the new book cover for 2nd Edition of The Frugal Book Promoter!) has a new kind of club going. It is marketing genius, a way to introduce people to his graphic talents. He is Chaz DeSimone, www.chazdesimone.com.
His typographic design project features what he considers the most interesting and beautiful character, the ampersand. He says,
• “Did you know that the ampersand used to be the last letter in the English alphabet?
• “And do you know how it got its name?
• “In fact, did you ever wonder why it is the shape it is, and why it has been designed in so many different configurations, most of which are valid and express exactly the same meaning? (Some are not true ampersands, probably because the "designer" did not know what the symbol is supposed to represent.)
“I will be explaining (and maybe surprising) you with the answers to the above questions, as I send you each AmperArt poster in the series. You'll also get some creative ideas from other subscribers on how they display their AmperArt pieces.
Right now, however, let's start your AmperArt collection with the first poster in the series, "Art & Design."
After you’ve signed up, your art comes to you with printing suggestions, etc. I can see this one in the office where I writer (it has yellow furniture!). Subscribe here:

Editing Tip: This is a punctuation concept I sometimes have trouble explaining to my clients. I tell them one thing then they see it used by a perfectly respectable publication some other way. I call it a style choice, but generally, it’s not a choice when you publish books. Wondering what it is? It’s called the serial comma. Tip: This is from the New 2nd Edition of The Frugal Book Promoter: Yep, it’s coming. Reexamine the keywords you use when you market on the Web. Some work better than others. You may be missing one that doesn’t have much competition so when someone uses it, your blog, Web site, article, or book will appear nearer the top of a reader’s search page. To do that, use Google’s Keyword tool. You’ll find it on the list of your free Google Account’s homepage.

In the News: Holy moley. Talk about a smart marketing move. In The Frugal Book Promoter (www.budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo), I advocated watching current events and hooking them to anything in one’s book that might relate to one of them. Kentucky Fried Chicken just showed us how to do that! They paid attention to one of Wade Dwyane’s tweets asking if anyone was hiring after the NBA lockout. Dwyane used to work for KFC, so they offered him his old job back. If he’d lead a team filling KFC buckets fast (instead of NBA baskets), they’d donate $250,000 to charity. Geesh! That is cheap advertising when they figure how much publicity they’ll get with this masterstroke of publicity - getting! Here is the link to read more: http://aol.sportingnews.com/nba/story/2011 - 07 - 11/kfc - offers - dwyane - wade - a - job - during - lockout?icid=main%7Chtmlws - main - n%7Cdl10%7Csec1_lnk3%7C218968 . So you don’t have $250,000 to do something similar. You don’t need to. You just need to keep your marketing bonnet on so that when the opportunity arises, you will be there. Maybe it will cost you $5. Maybe it will be free. But when it comes, you don’t want to miss it!

Formatting Tip: If you are publishing your book yourself or self - publishing books or booklets for promotion purposes (and you should be at least self - publishing for promotion!), save your indexing for the VERY last thing you do before you, as we used to say in the newspaper business, “put it to bed.” I’m frugal of time, too, and you can’t even imagine the time this will save you if you haven’t tried to do it some other way!

Feature
What About this Fan Fiction? . . .
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Time magazine ran an article on fan fiction in its July 18, 2011 edition. It’s a lot bigger than I thought it was. There were 526,085 entries of this alternative kind of writing in the Harry Potter category alone. These people are giving their creativity away.
Giving away your work is a hallmark of fan fiction, though some would argue that it isn’t creative because it uses characters created and developed by others. It sounds to me as if it is, though. Shakespeare did the same thing and no one would argue that he wasn’t creative or a great writer. Fan fiction writers also aren’t plagiarists. Experts think that most of the work is written by women. And they aren’t all amateurs. Still I have trouble understanding their motivation. If there are any fan fiction writers who are subscribers to this newsletter, I’d be interested in what they think makes them tick.
One thing for sure. If your book is popular enough to have fans avid enough to be inspired to write stories about your characters, they only serve to spread the interest and the word about your writing. Time makes it clear that this isn’t a copyright issue, even though some authors like Orson Scott Card and Ann Rice are more than a little annoyed by it. Others see the advantages and—really—according to time, there doesn’t seem to be much authors can do about it anyway.
I’d love to know your views on whether fan fiction is a positive or negative for authors. I’ll publish the best responses in my Letters - to - the - Editor section.

Gene Cartwright of iFOGO Fame...
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
…offers a new all 99 Cent e - book site. What a great way to promote. I’ve long recommended authors give away or sell inexpensively e - book copies of their early books and to give away promotional e - books to encourage readership. Gene is giving us another avenue to do so. Here are some of the details he sent me:
Our plan is to provide a very focused site where the photos are of
book jackets, not random images. Genre i.d., brief description, and buy links will be provided.
Since most authors have books on Smashwords, Amazon, etc., we can vet the quality of books very quickly. Our goal, by the approval process, as on iFOGO Village, is to weed out spammers. [Note, even Kindle is having trouble with spammy “no - books.” This problem was addressed in another issue of Sharing with Writers.]
Promo material will be channeled. Authors will create a group in their name, this will give their buyers/followers an easy way to connect with them. They will have a "My Page," within their group and authors may post promotional material to folks within their group. The idea is to encourage readers to follow you, thus creating a direct connection for future sales.
Of course, eBooks99cents.com will provide for blogs, discussions, videos, calendars, events, etc.
The eBook revolution is here to stay.
Where are you?

I know. I am a glutton for punishment and everyone hates me for my zero - tolerance rule on italics. But I was inoculated with it during UCLA’s Writers’ Program classes and I know anyone would be hard put to find a major writers’ program that doesn’t agree with them. So why risk the ire of exacting agents and publishers. Know the guidelines! http://thefrugaleditor.blogspot.com/2010/10/lets - talk - italics - again.html . An Itty - Bitty Column on Writing
What Does PUBLISHED Mean?
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
By Mindy Phillips Lawrence
Merriam - Webster Dictionary shows the meaning of PUBLISHED as a transitive verb meaning to make generally known, make public announcement of, disseminate to the public, produce or release for distribution or issue the work of an author. It also shows PUBLISHED as an intransitive verb meaning to put out an edition or to have one's work accepted for publication. Now we know what the dictionary says but what about submission sites and contests? Their definition can be a bit more tricky.
Some contests and publishers want your work to be “virgin,” that means not published on any Web site (including your own), not published on your friend Lucy’s blog, and not published anywhere in the known or unknown world by another publisher or self published.
Some markets will consider work that has been published somewhere else or that is simultaneously submitted to another contest or market. Others won’t. You need to consult the guidelines for each and every market to know for sure.
Also, you need to decide what you want to do with your work. Do you want to submit it to contests and for publication or do you want to impress your friends and family on FACEBOOK? If you place work there, it’s been published. Occasionally, you can UN - publish on sites and get away with submitting elsewhere. That’s a gamble, though.
I have a suggestion. Make a database of contests and submission guidelines with a field dedicated to what that particular market considers “published” to be. That way you won’t run into a snag when you submit.
