In the spirit of the advice I give in the Frugal Editor - - that is to use an extra pair of eyes whenever possible - - this newsletter is voluntarily copyedited by Mindy Phillips Lawrence ~ mplcreative1@aol.com ~ www.freewebs.com/mplcreative. I also tell writers to be patient with other writers when they make editing booboos. We're all human. This letter comes out weekly (except when I'm traveling or on deadline) and it's long!

Note from Carolyn

Dear Subscribers:

You all know by now that one of my favorite sections in The Frugal Book Promoter is the one on how to get awards, why they are important, and what do to with them once you get them. You probably have an inkling by now that I must follow my own advice because awards are one of the things that can set one book apart from the many tens (hundreds!) of thousands of books published each year these days.

So, that the second edition of The Frugal Book Promoter just was named runnerup (second) in the how - to category by the Los Angeles Book Fair may not seem like a huge deal, but following my own advice, I intend to make it huge. Here's the list of winners named by that book fair:
http://www.losangelesbookfestival.com/.

And yes, I plan to write my release, put it on my Web site, add it to my e - mail signature, and all those other things I tell you to do when you win, place, or show an award. ( - : If I don't set an example that we have to be proud of our own books and our own accomplishments, how can I expect you to get over being reticent?

Joy, Happy Writing, Editing, and Promoting
Carolyn

PS: Many of you know my "pebble in the pond" theory. Today was my day of proof that it works. Penny C. Sansevieri just wrote and said, "...wanted to let you know that I’ve added your Frugal Book Promoter to my recommended reading list for my New York University class on Self - Publishing which starts Feb 29. Yay! :) Actually, credit goes to Paula Krapf - - she said, 'We would be remiss not to include your fab information and she’s right.'" You can tell I’m grateful and proud!

PPS: The registration deadline for the f r ^ ^ Catholic Writers Conference (It's not exclusively for Catholics) is coming. Interested authors need to register on the Web site before March 1, 2012, and the information for it is in one of the last sections of this letter called "Carolyn's Appearances."

In the News: Amazon is planning to open a brick and mortar retail store. They are testing the market for a possible chain of e - reader boutiques that will feature Amazon - exclusive books and their Kindles and Kindle Fires. I hope they study the way Apple did theirs, especially the customer service—which Amazon has done well in some ways, not so well when one considers some of the PR booboos they’ve made with authors and affiliates in the past.

My review blog is my gift to authors. It’s a place for you to honor authors and books you’ve loved with a review. It’s a place to recycle the review of your own book, the one you love most. It’s f r ^ ^. Submission guidelines are in the left column at www.TheNewBookReview.blogspot.com. =============================================

Tip: This is a tip that will help your book's exposure on Amazon and it is way underused. Go to the page where your book is being sold. It's called your book's sell page or buy page. Find the "Add to Wish List" button. It's on the right near where you'd click if you decided to buy the book. Now you know where it is, get your family and friends to do it for your book. This single action can take your book viral on Amazon—meaning the link and book cover image will be seen many, many more places than it could otherwise and those who see it may "Like" it or buy it or put it on their wish list. Let's see how this works. You go to www.budurl.com/TheFrugalEditor and Wish List it. You may "Like" it, too—while you're there. Now, e - mail me the link to your sell page (hojonews@aol.com) and I'll do the same for you. BTW, I originally heard this tip from Denise Cassino, online book launch guru.

=================================================
Please paste this little blurb - - perhaps with a little endorsement - - in your newsletter or Web site: To subscribe to Sharing with Writers send an e - mail with SUBSCRIBE in the subject line to HoJoNews@aol.com or go to www.howtodoitfrugally.com for an auto subscribe box. Let me know you did it so I can do something similar for you on my Resources for Readers page at www.howtodoitfrugally.com.

Tip: If you've been thinking about adding a fan page to Facebook—or just trying to upgrade the look and work you do there, Magdalena Ball will present "Use Facebook to Its Marketing Fullest" on March 12 at 7pm Eastern Time. And it's f r ^ ^. It will be a PowerPoint Webinar. http://www.writersonthemove.com/p/writers - on - move - workshop.html

This is the only site I know that can help novelists, screenwriters, and playwrights get noticed by directors and producers. It’s BooksToFilm and it’s run by iFOGO’s Gene Cartwright. TIP: If you would like a copy of the critique group guidelines I used when I founded a critique group for my home town's system, let me know by sending me an e - mail with CRITIQUE GROUP GUIDELINES in the subject line. Mail to HoJoNews (at) AOL (dot) com. The guidelines are a conglomeration of guides I use in my UCLA classes, my own groups (when I have time to run them), some psychological principles, and some 12 - step recommendations. They do make for a happy group when it has a leader that keeps everyone more or less adhering to them.

Tip: Jeff Rivera says, "You know when your query letter sucks when you say 'Dear Agent.'" If you need to review query letter techniques since you last followed a so - so template you found on the Web, crack open your copy of The Frugal Editor (www.budurl.com/TheFrugalEditor) and turn to the section where I talk about query letters and relate several top - flight agents' pet query letter peeves. Yes, there are also sample query letters in the Appendix (along with the list of agents who said yes when I asked to interview them), but I urge you not to religiously follow any template. You’re the voice in your book and you should let it show through in your query letter.

With their established names and brand, they've discovered that they can net more money with less grief and more control by publishing themselves. How much more?" Then he carefully shows how $17,225 in royalties with a publisher could have reaped the same author $138,500 in the world of self publishing.

Five Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Blog Tips to Increase Traffic to Your Site

If you’re new to the writing game, you may not be aware of some of the essential steps needed to get in the game - - steps that will make your name and brand visible. Visibility is a biggie if you want to increase traffic to your site and move forward in your writing career.

One interesting fact about having content online is you never know who will end up finding it. It could be an agent, a publisher, or someone who wants to hire you for your writing style. You get the idea.

Why is it important to become familiar with SEO blog tips?

Simply put, the answer is to generate visibility.

Writing is no longer a solitary career. Now, if you want to create and build visibility, along with readers to your site (traffic), you need to build a platform and promote it.

So, what are some tips to help you get started in the right direction?

Well, the very first and most obvious tip is to have a Web site or blog site. Once you have one set up, it’s your job to post content to it on a regular basis, no less than once a week, two or three times a week is better though.

It’s that content that will establish you as an expert in your genre or area or expertise. This will help you down the road, after you’ve traditionally published or self - published one, five, ten, or more books and/or e - books, and you want to expand your writing career.

So, here is the strategy (SEO) that allows the search engines, such as Google, to find your site and content and to categorize and index your content. This in turn makes it available to online searchers.

Five SEO Blog Tips:

1. Use a keyword in your article title. Try one of the free keyword search tools to find an effective keyword. I use http://googlekeywordtool.com/

A keyword, according to Compendium.com, is “any word or phrase a searcher might use to describe or identify a desired resource on the Internet.”

2. Use that keyword in your article’s subheadings, and be sure to bold or italicize your subheadings.

So, what are those other tips? How do you make those keywords work for you? And what the devil is a long - tail keyword? See the rest of the article on my Sharing with Writers blog:

A general marketing rule is that a product must be seen seven times before it is purchased. That is just as true for books (because they are products, like it or not!). Let people see that book cover image! To do that, you are invited to advertise as a site sponsor at www.howtodoitfrugally.com/advertising.htm for only $35 a year. Yep, the frugal way! Click on the Advertising tab at the top of the page or contact me personally at hojonews@aol.com.
=================================================

Publishing Vocabulary: So what are the differences between wholesalers and distributors? It's tough because people use the terms interchangeably. Here it is in a nutshell: Distributors distribute your book but they also sell it using a sales force that visits book buyers and other methods. Wholesalers let libraries and bookstores order directly from them. Ingram and Baker and Taylor are wholesalers. But with them, you have to do all the marketing and selling yourself. So what else is new? You have to do most of it yourself in most instances anyway. Though I do believe true distributors (good ones!) can help—especially with bookstore sales.

Favicons (or Title Tags) For Your Web Site ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
By Chaz DeSimone

I read this article on how many folks weren't maximizing their branding with Title Tags, those little tabs at the top of your screen that label the sites you've visited:
(http://publishingcentral.com/blog/publishing/what - publishers - are - doing - wrong - with - their - websites). I asked my fave graphic designer Chaz DeSimone about them because it was certainly nothing I could possibly do myself and here's what he said:

Using title tags, also called Favicons, is probably one of the easiest things to do to improve search engine ranking and user - friendliness on a Web site, and yet so many publishing sites that I’ve visited have completely failed to capitalize on their title tags.

A surprising number of sites I’ve visited over the past few weeks had nothing at all in the title tag. An even greater number of sites had completely unhelpful and unrelated text as their title tag. This is a huge problem, since search engines use the title of a site as the link in search engine results, and Google in particular still uses the title tag as a ranking factor in their results.

But even if Google can compensate for your unhelpful tags, in an Internet where tabbed browsing is the norm, it is extremely important to use good title tags because that is what identifies your site in a browser’s tab.

Take a look at the image below. This is exactly what I see in one of my browser windows right now. There are three publisher websites tabbed on the screen.

Please note that you will not see this illustration unless you have used the link taking you to the pdf version of this newsletter. Find it near the top of the newsletter.

It’s obvious what two of these tags are, but what is that middle one? It’s somebody’s home page, but it’s not mine. If I were a customer who tabbed away to check something else then got distracted, this certainly wouldn’t remind me to come back and finish my purchase.

The tiny icon or logo in the third browser tab or URL field is called a Favicon (favorites icon). Since they are only 16 x 16 pixels (or 32x32 but ignore that option), you're either in luck or you're not,
depending on your logo. If it fits into a square and is rather simple or at least recognizable that small, you're in luck. Carolyn, if you chose to use a coin from the book cover I designed for you as your Favicon, you're most definitely in luck.

Just for fun, type in several major brand urls to see their Favicons. Target.com is superb. Ford is really forced with wasted space but at least the oval and script suggest Ford. Panasonic's Favicon fails totally. Their logo is the entire word Panasonic, so their Favicon "P" is practically useless as it is totally unrecognizable as Panasonic.

According to the author of the article you sent me, the Favicon is inexpensive and easy to implement. Not so! The image must be massaged through various stages in Photoshop until it is most recognizable and most pleasing at 16 pixels square. Note that you can't really read the Ford Favicon; it is merely suggested and is successful thanks to familiarity.

Once the Favicon is designed, it must be uploaded by getting into the Web site's source code. If you're using WordPress there's a plugin to make the process simpler.

Designing a Favicon takes a couple hours; I would ask around to see if there's someone at crowdspring.com or even Craigslist who can do that inexpensively. It definitely is a good marketing tool. There are free favicon generators here:

http://www.google.com/search?q=favicon&ie=utf - 8&oe=utf - 8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en - US:official&client=firefox - a

A fair price for turning a logo or imprint into a decent favicon is $50 to $300, depending on the amount of redesign involved and the designer’s level of sophistication and talent. My fee is typically $125 and up, although I always include the favicon in a brand identity project. The problem with that route is similar to how anyone with a computer can “design” a book cover. A good favicon requires all sorts of adjustments in Photoshop (and sometimes other programs) to appear striking and professional. Still, someone on a severe budget can get a favicon for free, and something in that URL bar is better than nothing.

Q&A a la Ann Landers
So What About These One - Page Synopses? ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

A CLIENT OF MINE ASKS:

Isn't a one - page synopsis supposed to be written in the voice of the book? (Someone said it wasn't.)

MY ANSWER:

It's pretty safe to say that anything you submit to an agent should reflect your voice. Why would they want to read straight journalism/texty copy hour after hour? How could they possibly be impressed by it.? The inaccuracies that go around on the WEB drive me crazy. And sometimes it's really hard to determine the credibility of the person giving the advice. Having said that, if an agent says they prefer "no voice, third person, passive tense, dull verbs" then that's what we would send them. But remember, there are lots of fly - by - night agents out there giving advice, too.

QUESTION TWO:

And shouldn't a one - page synopsis give you a good idea about the characters with the highlights of the plot, rather than a blow by blow description of how_x__happens and then__x__ happens next?

MY ANSWER:

Actually, a little of both. Try to work characters into the description of the narrative. You should also try to give a sense of the setting. You don't have much room in a one - page synopsis, obviously. "Highlights of the plot" is at least a little about what happens then and what happens then - - just more reduced. Like the sauce that Ratatouille, the Disney mouse chef makes. They call a sauce like that a reduction, meaning boiled down to something extremely flavorful. ( - : And, yes, the highlights, and the flavor, of the plot, are still there). It will be more pungent if the characters and the setting can be seen in the mind's eye.

UCLA Offers Writing Credential Scholarship ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
As many of you know, I took many classes at UCLA to learn the fine art of fiction after a life’s grounding in journalism and marketing. I have taught seminars there for nearly a decade. I believe in what they do. Now they offer a Writers’ Program Scholarship to those who “might not otherwise have an opportunity to develop his or her creative writing or screenwriting skills in a supportive classroom setting. Courses may be taken either onsite or online.” Applications are available at www.uclaextension.edu/writers or call 310 825 - 7483. The deadline is June 29, 2012.

Maria Edwards says, "I would like to extend an invitation to all published authors to participate in our next Bookmark Campaign. This campaign will run from the last week of May through the second week of July 2012.

"Here’s how it works - - Authors send me 500 bookmarks (if you don’t have any, we can design them for you). I collate everyone’s bookmarks and send them back to you. You take roughly 75 or so bookmarks to your local B&N and ask to meet with the store manager (or community relations person). Introduce yourself. Let them know you are a local author who, along with other authors, has decided to share some bookmarks with your local bookstores. Ask if they would place them near the registers and if the staff will place one in every bag when they ring up customers. Get their business card (2 – one for you and one for me). Thank them. Return to the store every week to restock their supply. Continue to engage the staff/manager/etc. You will do this the duration of the campaign. The goals are to establish relationship with the store manager and staff. as well as to give back by donating these bookmarks. The benefits - they get free bookmarks, you now have a new contact, your name and title gets a wider audience than doing this yourself, the potential for signings, events, books on shelf, and finally the possibility of future sales as a direct result of someone seeing your bookmark. Do this for big chain stores be it B&N, Books A Million, or others and at least one independent in your area. When I have received all the contact info from the stores, I will compile a list that gets distributed to all participating authors. This gives each of you the opening to contact those stores and thank them for the opportunity to place your bookmark in their store. You might also follow that with an invitation to do a future signing at their store. If only ten authors participate and contact only 2 stores each – you will each gain 18 contacts you didn’t have before from areas all across the country. If you are interested or want to know more, please e - mail me at info@Navigator - Books.com or call me at 619 - 517 - 9358.

Subject: 2012 Sharp Writ Book Awards from Monika Rose
On behalf of the Smart Book Lovers, I wanted to let you know that submissions are being accepted for the 2012 Sharp Writ Book Awards. Organized by the Smart Book Lovers, the Sharp Writ Book Awards are presented annually to recognize excellence in writing. Smart Book Lovers is a non - profit organization for people with high intellect and a passion for books. We originally started as the Book Lovers of American Mensa. We became an independent organization in July 2010 to better serve our ever - growing global membership (currently at 1200). Although no longer formally affiliated with Mensa, many of the members are current or former members of Mensa and other high IQ societies.

Print books and e - books are eligible for the award. They must be in English, published in 2009 or later, and have a valid ISBN (not required for digital books published on Kindle). The author need not be a member of a high IQ society.

We are accepting nominations in the following categories:

- Fiction, general
- Science fiction / fantasy / paranormal
- Mystery / thriller / suspense
- Poetry, all genres
- Non - Fiction, general
- Psychology / self - help
- Memoir/autobiography, adult
- Children's, all genres
- Young Adults, all genres

The winners will be announced in mid - January via an innovative video award ceremony. The 2010 and 2011 videos can be viewed at the Sharp Writ Book Awards website - www.book - awards.org

This is an excellent marketing opportunity because our members are avid readers. The winning books are featured on our home page for three months for fr ^ ^. (The advertisement can continue beyond three months for a nominal fee).

I know. I am a glutton for punishment and everyone hates me for my zero - tolerance rule on italics. An Itty - Bitty Column on Writing

Writing for a Cause: Honoring Humble Legumes
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
By Mindy Phillips Lawrence

I’m busy reading and reviewing a wonderful new cookbook by Crescent Dragonwagon called Bean by Bean. In it, she tells all about cooking, storing, and loving this simple and filling food. While I was looking at her wonderful recipes and comments, I got into a conversation with a friend about genetically modified foods (GMOs), as far away as you can get from the humble goodness of homegrown legumes. I learned things that I should have known a long time ago such as:

*There’s a PLU code for Genetically Modified Organisms (a 5 - digit PLU code beginning with the number 8) that isn’t used much because customers tend not to buy products using this code (wonder why?).

*Wal - Mart either already is selling, or is going to sell, GMOs without using this code. I imagine they already are.

All health professionals tell us to carefully read labels on our food to make certain we achieve the best nutritional outcome for our bodies. If the label doesn’t give us the information we need, how do we make an educated choice? At least 85% of our soybeans, corn and sugar beets are genetically modified NOW. I’m lucky to live near a Mennonite community, an heirloom seed company, and I live in Springfield, Missouri where there is more than one farmer’s market. Why would anyone want a genetically modified imposter when the real deal is available?

As I write this Itty Bitty, I realize the value of the pen. When you have a concern that comes up and you realize it could affect others, that’s a great reason to study up, wield your pen, and educate others.

Thanks to Crescent Dragonwagon for lighting the way to the “true bean.” I intend NOT to modify the already perfect.

I have a series of retail books that authors could benefit from. The reason? Authors are retailers, too. They must sell their books. But A Retailer’s Guide to In - Store Promotion will be especially valuable because it will give authors insight on how to convince retail outlets that a partnership (like a book signing, workshop or seminar) with them will benefit their bottom line. We’ll talk about "Query Letters: Your Major Marketing Tool - from Agent to Publishing to Bestseller." From the minute you go after a publisher writing a great query letter is your single most important marketing skill. One of the agents I interviewed for The Frugal Editor said that authors who follow templates religiously are doing themselves a disservice. She hints that if they can't let their voice come through in a letter, then why should she trust them to write a book. You'll learn the pet peeves of agents I interviewed and some techniques for making your letter stand out without resorting to kitschy or downright annoying tactics. As a co - sponsor of the Muse Online Writers’ Conference (and the first one at that!), I’d like you to put a tickler file on you calendar to register for the 2012 weeklong event in October. I can’t tell you how many of my subscribers have been disappointed that they can’t avail themselves of this f r ^ ^ conference (every year!) because they miss the deadline. August would be a good time to let your digital calendar remind you to enroll at http://themuseonlinewritersconference.com/.

Coming!  Watch for more news on the coming Catholic Writers’ Guild Conference from March 17 to 31. (It’s f r ^^!) They have chats, forums and more! I’ll be presenting on two topics: Turning Dreadful Adverbs into Nuggets of Gold: We all resist chopping away at our precious adverbs and adjectives. They are such handy little pals to have around. Trouble is they tend to discourage strong verbs and metaphors. Let's discuss how during your editing process you can make them to work to your advantage rather than just telling you not to use them. Which is ridiculous. They are useful parts of speech, after all!

And Making Twitter Work For You: How writers (including fiction writers) can make Twitter work for them. Twitter can drive traffic to blogs, Web sites and other social networks. It can even sell books!
There will also be online pitch sessions with noted Catholic publishers and secular publishers as well. The conference is held via chats and forums at http:// www.catholicwritersconference.com. Interested authors need to register on the Web site before March 1, 2012.
