Note from Carolyn
Dear Subscribers:
I decided to focus this AllTips edition of Sharing with Writers on writers of fiction (and poetry.) It's not that I want to neglect my nonfiction subscribers, it's just that fiction writers often get discouraged when they learn that nonfiction sells more than fiction, or when someone tells them that, as fiction writers, they may as well forget marketing.
And then there's something else. I believe that even nonfiction writers can benefit from some fiction - writing techniques. Haven't you noticed more and more anecdotes in articles in newspapers? And dialogue in essays. And even straight reporting. That's because the techniques used by fiction writers can help bring readers into the now, up the conflict, and a whole lot more.
So, maybe I can talk even those of you who write nonfiction to browse this letter. There are a few marketing tips you can use, and at least—when you get to the very end - - you'll get a kick out of the regular Wordstuff feature. A little chuckle never hurt any writer, especially when they've been sitting in front of a screen all day.
Happy Writing, Editing and Promoting
Carolyn

==============================================
Tip: When your developing characters, remember that actions speak louder than words. Example: Your character can say one thing and do something else. When that happens the reader learns much more about the character than if the author writes expository narrative, as an example.

Try Imagining the Future: Ruminations on Fathers and Other Masculine Apparitions for the men in your life. Sure, they like fusses made over them, too! (www.budurl.com/Imagining) ($6.95). She Wore Emerald Then (www.budurl.com/MotherChapbook) ($12.95), for mothers and other women, Deeper in the Pond, for the feminists in your life—both men and women (www.budurl.com/DeeperPond) ($6.95) and Blooming Red (www.budurl.com/BloomingRed), to use as Christmas cards or incidental holiday gifts. Plan next Christmas early. And ask about my special price on chapbook/cards purchased in bulk! All these chapbooks are from the Celebration Series of poetry from Magdalena Ball and me.
================================================
Tip: Fidlar Doubleday (a well - known printer for independent publishing) says, “…it's important not to use QR codes as your only response mechanism. Marketing campaigns should offer several ways for people to respond so they can pick which is most convenient for them. This isn't just for QR codes. It's for any marketing campaign. It's just good marketing.” So do you use a QR code to take people to a sample chapter from your book? If not, read up on them in The Frugal Book Promoter, www.budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo
Writing Tip:Your first rewrite or second draft should include an examination on the suspense in your book and this, surprisingly includes both fiction and nonfiction. A couple of questions to ask yourself are: Is there foreshadowing (subtle indications of what is to come). Do your chapters leave questions that propel the reader to keep reading? Suspense is an integral part of conflict, too. Watch for these elements. If you don’t know much about them, read up. And consider looking again when you get to that final edit before you send you book off to an editor, an agent, or a publisher.
==============================================
My review blog is my gift to authors. It’s a place for you to honor authors and books you’ve loved with a review. It’s a place to recycle the review of your own book, the one you love most. It’s f r ^ ^. Submission guidelines are in the left column at www.TheNewBookReview.blogspot.com. =============================================
Tip: Submitted by Patricia Kokinos, author of ANGEL PARK, in its second iUniverse STAR edition, at http://ChangeTheSchools.com and on Amazon at http://tiny.cc/AngelParkAmz : At last, iUniverse has jumped into the water; they are in the process of reformatting ALL of their ebooks to sync with Kindle, along with all other e - book readers. Thus, buyers of iUniverse books can now get the Kindle version on Amazon and iUniverse authors, like me, can be part of the mainstream; I’m sure that was one huge negotiation! ~
Writing Tip: When you begin your rewrite (we could call it your first edit) ask yourself if your first chapter includes an existing situation that has changed (provided conflict): That would be the hook. Or provide an existing situation that the protagonist desperately wants to change. What that character does about these situations is what sets the story moving toward a conclusion.

=================================================
Tip: This tip is not as f r ^ ^ as I’d like but it may be worth a trial to get your book seen by librarians, bookbuyers, etc. Go to: http://firstchapterplus.com/author/
Tip: If you’re doing your own graphics for your book cover, your banners or about anything else, go to Google and type in “free fonts.” I found some stunners. You know, fonts (typefaces) that don’t reek “canned.”
=================================================
This is the only site I know that can help novelists, screenwriters, and playwrights get noticed by directors and producers. It’s BooksToFilm and it’s run by iFOGO’s Gene Cartwright. It isn’t as frugal as I’d like, but there are times it pays to spend a little. One of those times would be if our investment leads to something big: http://www.ifogo.com/buy/order_chj.html .
=================================================
Tip: Be careful how many characters you introduce at one time. You don’t want to confuse your readers. As you introduce them, let the reader know something memorable about the way the look, dress. Or give them an individual way of speaking. They may have a tendency not to finish a sentence. Or there may be a certain cadence to their speech. Or they may tend to use long, Latinate words.

My blog, War, Peace, Tolerance and Our Soldiers is where I get to nag and rag and try to make things better for our troops and maybe for the world. It includes a segment of frugal ways to help our troops and veterans. I'd love to have you leave a comment. www.warpeacetolerance.blogspot.com

Tip: Kathy Stemke blogs about the dangers inherent in shopping for an agent. Please also notice my comment and leave a comment of your own. http://www.writersonthemove.com/2011/11/to - agent - or - not - to - agent - that - is.html?showComment=1320265282826#c7302325535990958577
Tip: Many authors clip photos of people they want to use as models for the characters in their books. If you use stock photos to do that, you could use those photos to attract interest to your novel in your blogs, on Facebook, Pinterest and lots more. Marketing studies show that images attract 50% more interest than anything else, including plain copy, graphs, etc.

Writing Tip: The author needs to know his characters. Some authors write whole backstories on their characters to better understand their motivations. But use caution here. Do not plop this character study into your novel. Let your story start where it starts. Weave in what part of the character’s background that is essential to the story. And, yes!, toss the rest! Or keep the rest for another story, another novel, another day.
================================================= Social networking is one of the best ways to make valuable contact and build a list of readers. Tip: I've always said that one of the best (and most frugal!) ways for an author to learn more about book promotion is by reading books written by the pros, and that's why I wrote The Frugal Book Promoter (www.budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo). Having said that, this new program from Dan Poynter sounds like a perfect aid and would be especially useful for anyone who has read at least one good book on book promotion. That's because educators tell us that we learn faster and retain ideas that we've already been introduced to. At any rate here is more information from Dan: http://sharingwithwriters.blogspot.com/2011/11/discover - secrets - of - book - promotion - with.html

Writing Tip: Don’t always tell us how characters feel. Show us by what they do. They put a hole in a door with a baseball bat (they’re mad). They doodle (they’re preoccupied or nervous.) They comb their hair a lot (they’re nervous or vain).
=================================================
Subscribers who have websites or newsletters of their own may be interested

This is a running feature for the poets among us and those who would like to try writing poetry but feel . . . well, inadequate about the writing or the promotion. Please send in your poetry tips and resources for this section.
TIP: Try writing your poem in prose. Put all the passion and associations that come to you down. Then go back and insert your line breaks. You might find your poetry improves.
=================================================
Endorsement: I wanted to tell you how your workshops, reading your newsletter, and just chatting with you has been a great help to me. I have a background in marketing from the fashion world and even though it has helped me get my foot in the door, I honestly have to say that after getting to know you, reading your books, and everything else I just said has truly helped me put Stories for Children Magazine on the map. ~ VS Grenier, Founder and Editor - in - Chief Stories for Children Magazine. http://storiesforchildrenmagazine.org.
=================================================
Editing Tip: Do you know how to TRACK using your word processor? This is a handy tool for editing. It’s especially useful for letting more than one person at a time peruse your work and give you suggestions because each can use a different color font. What a time - saver when you are eager to get your book to your agent or into print! The Frugal Editor (www.budurl.com/TheFrugalEditor) gives details on how to use this function with Word, but those who use other programs can get what they need with the little “help” button in their program—whatever that program happens to be.
=================================================
A general marketing rule is that a product must be seen seven times before it is purchased. That is just as true for books (because they are products, like it or not!). Let people see that book cover image! To do that, you are invited to advertise as a site sponsor at www.howtodoitfrugally.com/advertising.htm for only $35 a year. Yep, the frugal way! Click on the Advertising tab at the top of the page or contact me personally at hojonews@aol.com.
=================================================
Writing Tip: Let your characters react to what is happening in the scene. They can react by saying something (dialogue) or by doing something. You can have them do both. Sometimes how they move can be used in place of the usual "she said" dialogue tag.

TIP: My fellow UCLA instructor (and former student, if you can believe!) has just installed a resource page on the Web for the students in his indie publishing class at UCLA. In the News: Jon Krakauer blew the whistle on fellow author Greg Mortenson for alleged inaccuracies in his book on building schools in Pakistan’s tribal areas. Controversy can be good for marketing but charges of plagiarism and…mmmm, exaggerations…are one thing we want to avoid. That’s why I covered plagiarism—both accidental and intentional—in the new expanded and updated edition of The Frugal Book Promoter (www.budurlc.com/FrugalBkPromo). That section also warns against letting the fear of plagiarism curtail your writing career.

Writing Tip: When you are writing from a character’s point of view—even in third person, the reader can tell what he or she is thinking. That means most anything that comes from the author’s pen will be attributed to the character by readers. The reader will have a sense that he is inside that character’s head. That is often called internal thought. And we don’t need to italicize it to make the reader understand that.

How - to - Help - Other - Authors Tip: When you buy two of an author's books as gifts online, do it with separate transactions if you can. As an example, if you have purchased the "fr ^ ^ freight" program on Amazon. Or if you're feeling so generous you don't mind paying for shipping a second time. Or if your order is so big it can qualify for fr^^ shipping twice. That way your purchases drive your author - friend's ratings up by two instead of only one.

How - to - Help - Other - Authors Tip: When you’re on another author’s buy page at Amazon, click on the like button. Go one step further, use the Twitter and/or Facebook feature that pops up to let others know about it. Try it on my page. I'll love you for it. Send me your link and I'll do the same for you. www.budurl.com/TheFrugalEditor
Writing Tip: Character building should not be a biography. We should learn about a character by what he or she does a little at a time, the way we do in real life.
Writing Tip: Even if your character is a gadget or a situation, it must have personality to engage your readers. Think R2D2! Think Disney. That studio could (and would!) give a rock character if it needed to.

Fun and F r ~ ~: If you purchased the Frugal Book Promoter or the Frugal Editor, I'd love you to review it on Amazon or BN.com. Make it simple; just tell what part of it you found most valuable. If you do, send me the review link (URL) and I will send you a 35 - page handout from one of my UCLA classes. As a thank you, of course. HoJoNews@aol.com
=================================================
Writing Tip: A character’s gestures and the way they sit or walk can give a reader an idea of a character’s state of mind far more effectively than if the authors just tells the reader their character is sad or angry, or ticked off.

How - to - Help - Other - Authors Tip: When you are on an author’s buy page on Amazon, add tags for their book. Scroll down a bit and find the box. If someone has already done that, just check on the ones you agree with. It will help an author by cueing Amazon’s algorithms.
Tip: I learn a lot from Terry Whalin. I’m giving you the link for the review he did of The Frugal Book Promoter but while you’re there, you really should sign up so you can post reviews, network, grow your search engine footprint and more. http://bit.ly/oZFcVK Extra Tip: When you sign in, use the Facebook option to do it. TIP:
A Fiverr.com Success Story from Joan Stewart
Note: Fiction writers can use services (and logos!), too!
Several Publicity Hounds sent me to the dog house for my enthusiastic endorsement of Fiverr.com, a site where people tell you what they're willing to do for only $5.
I know many people who have used this site to find vendors to create logos, write headlines, draw illustrations and cartoons, and even have WordPress blogs installed. That's why I recommended it.
The skeptics say sites like this devalue the good work of other competent vendors, and they'd never consider using this resource.
Then, I heard from Publicity Hound Jenny Munn of Atlanta, Ga., this morning, thanking me for the beautiful header that a graphics artist at Fiverr created for her blog.
The artist promised it within eight days and finished the logo in only one day.
"It cost me only $5, and I wouldn't have lost much if things hadn't worked out," Munn said.
Fiverr.com, by the way, is one of the 60 tools I shared during one of my webinars. Read more about what else I shared.

I know. I am a glutton for punishment and everyone hates me for my zero - tolerance rule on italics. But I was inoculated with it during UCLA’s Writers’ Program classes and I know anyone would be hard put to find a major writers’ program that doesn’t agree with them. How - to - Help - Other - Authors Tip: Leave comments. Leave them everywhere. On blogs. When you read a review on Amazon. When you watch a video. When you can do it relatively subtly, mention your book—how it is related to whatever you’re commenting one. In some places Amazon and other online bookstores even supply a way to link directly to your title.

The new edition of The Frugal Book Promoter doesn't neglect fiction writers—or poets!
