Note from Carolyn

Dear Subscribers:

What fun it is to have my husband with a published book. Now I get to drag him along to my events without guilt. Mind you, it's not his first book. The first was the same book published in China in simplified Chinese. It wasn't available on Amazon US so there was no reason to con him into any marketing on these shores. But now that it's in English, well…

Our first big event is the Great Los Angeles Writers Conference. I'm speaking but I'm billing the event as a marketing learning event. Ahem. (That conference is this weekend so, if you live in the LA area, scroll down to the end of this letter. It may not be too late to register!).

The next one is Book 'Em in North Carolina in February of 2013 headed by p.m. terrell. He'll be in the nonfiction section. I'll be presenting and showing some of my books in the "Author Help" section. Yeah, I'll take along some of my poetry chapbooks but I'm really there to help other authors. Scroll down for that event, too. The sales tables are fr ~ ~. You only need pay a percentage of what you sell—much like bookstores, though this is a donation, not a fee. We may go on a little road trip afterward. That area is full of history.

I first suggested we take a friend along to events with us to our events when I wrote the first edition of The Frugal Book Promoter. We can put a good, enthusiastic, chatty person to work in so many ways. They can talk to people when the author is otherwise occupied (Potty break? Gulping down some protein? Talking to a reporter?) They may be less shy about recommending your book than you are. They can hand out fliers or f r ~ ~ CDs (read more about some of these f r ~ ~ bies that actually work in The Frugal Book Promoter, www.budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo). They can run get you a Coke. They can help you haul heavy stuff. They can tell you if you have lipstick on your teeth.

Most of all, they can make an event more fun.

Joy, Happy Writing, Editing, and Promoting
Carolyn

PS: An event I didn't haul my husband to was a poetry reading at a new indie bookstore in LaCanada - Flintridge last weekend (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Flintridge - Bookstore - Coffeehouse/59728560543). (The picture is available in the pdf version of this newsletter). It was heartwarming to see a poetry reading packed. The editor and founder of the prestigious literary journal Rattle was there. So was the well - known poet Suzanne Lummis. You never know who you will meet at events like this. Even if you aren't reading, take your business cards or bookmarks. Heck, take a few books to give away to people who can help you spread the word. BTW, poets should get to know more about the Monday reading series. Learn more by sending an e - mail to poet Lois P. Jones (emusing@sbcglobal.net).

PPS: Now is the time to register for the Muse Online Writers Conference I cosponsor in October (or pitch Lea Schizas for a spot as a presenter). Scroll down to my appearances for details and a link.

Letters - to - the - Editor:

Hi Carolyn,

Regarding: The essay on bookstores in the last issue:

I signed up for the Vroman's program and they put my books on a "local authors" shelf, but nicely displayed. They also featured them several times on the electronic newsletters they send out, as books by local authors that people could order online from Vroman's.

I paid extra for a signing event at Vroman's and they let me, and another local author, bring refreshments, which they set up for us. I brought the books, they entered them into their system, and removed those that did not sell at the end of the event. I got a check later for that event and another check for the Local Author books. It was not dirt cheap (frugal? Not really) but it was well done by them. Some of those who came were very enthusiastic about the book.

Cheers,
Laura L Mays Hoopes

Carolyn,

You asked, "Does Vroman's set these books aside in a separate department which would then encourage their customers (readers) to view them differently?"

Vroman's put two of my publishing firm's books (White Whisker) into this program just as they started it. They waived the $35 fee because I'd asked before they implemented it. Vroman's put our books in the "Local Authors" section, which, for people perhaps looking for indie books,
it'd be a good spot to go. However, my books were in the Fiction section before and always seemed to sell. The other book, Boyfriend From Hell, was a YA book and seemed out of place in "Local Authors."

For whatever reason, neither of the titles sold a single copy and were returned. I realize that Vroman's, under pressure from a huge rise in local authors, came up with this method, and the $35 fee helps weed out those less than focused. However, if you want to get some play on your books, Carolyn, I suggest you hunt up one or two of the clerks, pitch them your books, and give them free copies if they are interested in reading your book. The ideal shelf to be on at Vroman's is the "Employee Picks" area.

My review blog is my gift to authors. It’s a place for you to honor authors and books you’ve loved with a review. It’s a place to recycle the review of your own book, the one you love most. It’s f r ^ ^. Submission guidelines are in the left column at www.TheNewBookReview.blogspot.com. =============================================

Tip: The IBPA (Independent Book Publishers Association) suggests you make your Web site "easy for people to contact you or your publicist." Forget the teeny tiny link at the bottom of the page. I don't even much like the forms some provide you to reach customer service people. Direct e - mail access feels personal and loving in comparison.

In the News: I read Michael Hiltzik's column for the LA Times avidly. Recently he mentioned that a study showed that 50% of Facebook readers report they never notice ads on FB—and this in spite of the fact that FB targets specific interests with their ads using what they know about us because of their algorithms, etc. Then he notes that FB's reaction to the study was to increase the commercial content in the messages "while concealing its true nature." That "true nature" he refers to is that your "like" shows up in your friends' newsfeeds "as an item placed by the company [you liked]."

Hiltzik says the idea is "dress up the ad so it masquerades as a voluntary endorsement of a product between friends." I don't want to discourage you from liking on FB. We can do one another lots of good by "liking" and I think we should. I'm not even averse to recommending a commercial product or business. It's just that if you are anti advertising or heavy on pro privacy, I think you should know what the results may be.

Literary Novel Named Global E - Book Finalist
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Leora Skolkin Smith's new novel Hystera was named a finalist in the Globabl E - book Awards (http://globalebookawards.com/2012 - global - ebook - awards - finalists/).

Hystera is set in the turbulent 1970s when Patty Hearst became Tanya the Revolutionary. It is a timeless story of madness, yearning, and identity. After a fatal accident takes her father away, Lillian Weill blames herself for the family tragedy. Tripping through failed love affairs with men, and doomed friendships, all Lilly wants is to be sheltered from reality. She retreats from the outside world into a world of delusion and the private terrors of a New York City Psychiatric Hospital. Unreachable behind her thick wall of fears, the world of hospital corridors and strangers become a vessel of faith. She is a foreigner there until her fellow patients release her from her isolation with the power of human intimacy. How do we know who we really are? How do we find our true selves under the heavy burden of family and our pasts? In an unpredictable portrait of mental illness, Hystera penetrates to the pulsing heart of the questions." D. Jean Quarles Publishes Anthology
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
In October 2011, D. Jean Quarles was feeling frustrated, and had been feeling that way for a while. It may have been the fast approaching holidays or the fact she had recently lost her father. While she wanted nothing more than to sit at her desk and type away, the time seemed elusive. There was always something dragging her attention away. She felt wrenched and yanked, pulled and twisted ever farther from her writing.

D. Jean needed balance. And who better to ask about how to achieve this blissful state than other writers who, she was sure, also had struggled at some point in their careers. So she posted ads on the Internet.

Writers wanted. Please contact me if you would be interested in writing a blog post on how you balance writing and life.

More than 60 amazing writers contacted Quarles, eager to share their lives and secrets to success. She felt immensely blessed by their words and so it wasn't long before she approached them again and asked if she could put all of their wisdom together into a book for other writers looking for inspiration, tools, and understanding. These are their words for you.

Homer as Poet
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
When I was required to read The Iliad in college, I was tempted to go the Cliff Notes route. By the time I was through with the book, I only wished that I could read it in the "original" Greek, which would, of course, have been an interpretation of The Iliad's oral tradition, if not a translation. FP Free Press (a division of Simon and Schuster) now has a new translation. I am excited to see if it can erase that yearning I felt so long ago. The Wall Street Journal says, "The first major new translation in nearly 15 years is an action - packed, slick and contemporary rendering…Stephen Mitchell [the translator] may be the closest thing that the translation world has to a rock star." Besides it looks as if it is a throwback to the time of beautiful books. You know, the kind we want to keep. Learn more at www.iliadbook.com.

Great New Book Marketing Blog
With Lynnette's Top Four Tips ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
By Lynnette Phillips

I have a blog called Every Day Book Marketing (http://everydaybookmarketing.com/). My aim is to let authors know
1) marketing and promoting your book doesn't have to be expensive, 2) it also doesn’t have to be time consuming and
3) you can dispose of the "it’s too hard" mindset.

The most important words to keep in mind when you are setting up your marketing strategy are frequency, consistency and time management.

Tip #1: Do something for your book "Every Day." This doesn’t have to have to be a big or time - consuming task but consistency and frequency cause website visitors, search engine rankings and book sales to climb.

For example, add some content to your website; this might be a blog post, a link or an upcoming literary event on the media calendar.
Or you might consider dropping someone a thank you card, distributing some bookmarks to the local bookstore or library, or checking out what kind of fun flash book trailer you can get at Fiverr.com

Tip #2: Publicity = free (or very affordable) visibility. Visibility (which = exposure), frequency and consistency = book sales.

One of the most cost effective marketing tools available to you is social media—you know, Twitter and Facebook. Just be careful. Twitter and Facebook can be voracious when it comes to your time.
One time - saving social media trick is to link your blog content to your social sites using RSS feeds (RSS=Real Simple Syndication). www.TwitterFeed.com can help you get started. Using this technique provides fresh content and makes sure you maintain a presence on your network.
For more time saving social media tips check out my booklet “Fight Back: Don’t Let Twitter and Facebook Take Over (Your Life)”
(http://www.amazon.com/Fight - Back - Twitter - Facebook - ebook/dp/B006S828WQ/ )

Tip #3: Marketing and publicity are not one - size - fits - all. You, your writing, your book are all unique so don't fall into the trap of thinking that what works for one author’s book sales will be the best fit for you. Your only limit is creativity. Use some out of the box thinking and have some fun! For instance, you can try a virtual book signing using Kindlegraph.com.

Tip #4: Don't get stuck in a rut with the usual literary venues; if you write romance think florist shop.

What have you done for your book today?

~Lynnette Phillips is a book marketer, writer, and author of a series of book marketing and self - publishing guides. Her most recent title is “QR Codes: Bridging the Marketing Gap”, (http://www.amazon.com/QR - Codes - Bridging - Marketing - ebook/dp/B008AYYODC/) a perfect how to guide that introduces authors to mobile marketing.

Tip: Manage your passwords the right way to avoid being hacked or have your identity stolen. Though they aren't completely secure, password management programs will let you do this. Getting the Pony Express Through Spam Filters
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Here is a continuation of our newsletter discussion from the last issue of SharingwithWriters. It's a short list of things you shouldn’t do or say if you don’t want your newsletter to get caught in spam folders and other techy devices.

 Don’t use symbols, especially dollar signs. Notice, I've stopped evening using the (at) symbol in e - mail addresses in this newsletter—just in case.

 Offer a way to unsubscribe from your letter.

 Don’t let your exclamation points and question marks run wild. Editors frown on it, so it’s a good thing to avoid in any case.

 Use any length subject line in the e - mail you wish, but key information must go into the first 50 character spaces. Besides, it’s not nice to try to mislead Mother Nature or anyone else.

 Avoid overused marketing phrases like the ones suggested by Linda Carlson of Independent Book Publishers Association slick magazine, IBPA Independent. Most sound creepy anyway! I can’t put them in this letter but if you’ll e - mail me at HoJoNews (at) AOL (dot) com, I’ll send it to you. Or try this link: http://www.ehow.com/info_8523616_list - keyword - criteria - spam - filters.html

I need editing questions and tips for my The Frugal, Smart, and Tuned - In Editor blog, www.thefrugaleditor.blogspot.com. Articles, too! You ask and I'll provide ample credits and links to whatever site you choose. HoJoNews@aol.com. =============================================

Tech Tip: If you want to have password - perfect security, here's a way to use an Excel file instead of letting your computer memorize your passwords for you. In that file, you list your accounts—say your account to enter LinkedIn. Then in another column you list your password, but it isn't the real password. It's in code. Say your password is MaMaMiaat925. Your code would then be ZzZzZzz (at) 925. It lets you know which letters are capped and which aren't (an important technique when you assign codes intended to give hackers big headaches). And you know that the "at" insignia is always spelled out in your passwords. You might ask why you need to be so careful about a file that's stowed in your own computer. That's the scary part. Hackers—if they should be so inclined—may find their way into your personal computer files, too.

Thank Yous

These are, indeed, thank yous but it occurs to me that many Sharing with Writers readers are not using them as resources. Often the blogs, newsletters, Web sites, and other entities mentioned are perfect vehicles for exposing your books to new readers. It is up to you to click or copy and paste to see which might be suitable—and for inspiration on how to make what you do a match for them.

Please Be One of Persephone's Juicy Jewels
Agent Terrie Wolf and her clients, Magdalena Ball and Carolyn Howard - Johnson, are thinking "yummy desserts" in this age of culinary denial. We all need a treat occasionally - - to stay sane and satisfied.

Terrie is shopping a book of poems that illustrate favorite dessert recipes of famous chefs everywhere for her clients. Conversely, famous chefs everywhere may be inspired by the poems of Howard - Johnson and Ball. If you are a chef or know one, please join us in this project.

HOW TO SUBMIT
Submit your recipe (or recipes up to ten). They may be illustrated if you wish (see the disclaimer below). You may simply submit your favorites or use the poems put up on the Facebook fanpage at https://www.facebook.com/PersephonesJuicyJewels to inspire a new recipe.

Please also send ideas you have for partnering with the marketing of this book.
Example: You might want to sell the book in the checkout or waiting area of your restaurant. You would also benefit from the marketing surrounding the book and earn the right to make the winning of this contest a centerpiece of your own promotion. We welcome full participation.

WHAT YOU WILL GAIN
Winners will receive the right to help us illustrate the poems in Persephone's Juicy Jewels with your recipe(s). Credits and information about your restaurant, book, TV show, or you - name - it will be included in the book. You will receive a dozen copies of Persephone's Juicy Jewels to send to the food editors of local or national media with a media release featuring your own culinary business and your contest win to use to widen the publicity arc for your achievement.
Thank you, Dan. Here is an image to put with it if you'd like. Mouthwatering, huh?
If you'd like to get f r ~ ~ reviews from Dan's readers, subscribe to his newsletter and submit your pitch according to his instructions. He says submissions must be ready to copy and paste. That's not a bad rule for any kind of submission to an editor or blogger anywhere.

Editing Tip: June Casagrande, author of Grammar Snobs Are Great Big Meanies published by Penguin (www.budurl.com/GrammarSnobs) lets Mitt Romney off the hook for typos in her recent syndicated grammar column, "A Word Please." That fits with her premise that we all make mistakes and that we're not always right ourselves and that, in fact, many of the most avid grammar cops don't know the difference between a grammar rule and a style choice. In this case, Romney (or his team) made at least three booboos in a week. Two are obvious typos, the other probably a brain lapse when the text read "peak" for "peek." She also cops to her most recent goof. It was a little scrap word left in a sentence after she had edited it.
That only proves that none of us is perfect. I would add that we're all in this together. So, we are as careful as we can be. We enlist help from an editor (like my Mindy Philips Lawrence for this newsletter). When it is an error that can be corrected, we let one another know. But in doing so, we don't take an official stance, for we, too, may be wrong.

Q&A a la Ann Landers

Getting Submission Protocol Right
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Question:

Dearest Carolyn, I am designing a new business card to send to editors that will be attached to the top of my manuscripts when I submit them. I would like to know if the correct title under my name should be "Writer?" or "Novelist?" Thank you for your help. I appreciate it so much! Your newsletter was full of wonderful information. I enjoyed it and look forward to the next one with great anticipation!. Hope you are having a good week.

Sincerely, Kae Kleinman (student from Eve Caram's UCLA class).

Answer:

Kae, sounds as if you need The Frugal Book Promoter. Though a business card is OK, you need a cover letter or query letter with your manuscript and you didn't mention that. The Frugal Book Promoter or the chapter on query letters in The Frugal Editor (www.budurl.com/TheFrugalEditor) will keep you from doing something that will mark you as an amateur. I take it your book is a novel. You should follow each publisher's or agent's submission instructions exactly. That probably means you won't send the whole manuscript.

If you want to slip a card into the package, fine. But don't attach it to the manuscript. And, I'd use "novelist" if that's what you're shopping and not a term like "writer" which could indicate a whole range of writing specialties.

Having said that, you can probably get by without a business card - - at least for this purpose. Maybe you'll want to wait. Say until you have a great Web site completed or a blog that showcases your platform.

Hope this helps.
CHJ

An Itty - Bitty Column on Writing

Metaphorically Speaking
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
By Mindy Phillips Lawrence

Without realizing it, we are exposed to metaphors all the time, particularly during election season. Many people are very good at using this writing convention (like Shakespeare) and some are not (place pundit’s name here), but this means of comparison can open up a specific topic for us and make it more memorable.

Metaphor differs from simile by means of a “like” or “as”. Metaphors don’t need these additional words: Time is a river (metaphor); Time is like a river (simile). A metaphor can be a comparison of two words. It can take a word and expand its meaning to the whole universe.

I have to admit to a love of misplaced and badly written metaphors. I don’t want them in my writing but I love chortling when other writers use them. Case in point:

“The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn’t.”

Try using them, but wisely. There are several links below to get you started.

List your book FOR FREE in our "Family Friendly Book Directory"

As the author of 34 books, including a dozen children's titles, I know how
challenging it can be to promote books and find your audience.

And as the Founder of I Love To Write Day, a grassroots campaign I launched
in 2002 to have people of all ages practice writing every Nov. 15, I am
always looking for ways to let our supporters (over 4.2 million of them!)
know about new books that are "family friendly."

So, in honor of the 10th Anniversary of I Love To Write Day, I will be
publishing the "Family Friendly Book Directory" and sending it to the 28,000
schools all across the U.S. that celebrate ILTWD every Nov. 15. I will ask
the school librarian to share the directory with the students, teachers,
administrators and parents. I will also send the directory to our ILTWD
e - newsletter subscribers, and it will be posted on the
www.ilovetowriteday.org site. You can submit your book info directly to John Riddle at johnriddle (at) sprintmail.com.

If you have a "family friendly" book, it can be listed f r ~ ~! A fr ~ ~

IBPA Offers Special Price on Getting - Review Service
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
It took me a long time to join IBPA (Independent Book Publishers of America). Then, when I did (it was called PMA then), I didn't think it did much for individual self - published authors so I dropped out. I joined again this year and am finding all kinds of services that have worked for both my husband (author of What Foreigners Need To Know About America From A To Z— http://amzn.to/ForeignersAmericaUS), and I. I now recommend it. Here's a disclaimer, though. Like anything else, you can't just join. You must participate. And when you participate you must do it in a way to glean the biggest benefit. Example: I still believe that having your book displayed in a booth at BEA does you no good if you can't be there in person to sign it and market it in other ways. Details on how to make book fairs work for you (of course!) are in The Frugal Book Promoter (www.budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo ) This is IBPA's new program with NetGalley.com which I mentioned in the last issue of SWW—before I even knew about this new partnership.

IBPA is proud to announce a new benefit exclusive to IBPA members, where IBPA members are able to save more than $500 and reach 50,000+ reviewers on NetGalley with the NEW IBPA/NetGalley Book Review Express program.

With NetGalley, IBPA members can share galleys electronically (and with full anti - copying protection applied) and instantly with reviewers, media, booksellers, librarians, bloggers and other contacts you save the expense of processing, shipping, and mailing galleys and IBPA does all the work!
IBPA has partnered with NetGalley to bring efficient, effective, AND affordable galley distribution to IBPA members. Exclusive to IBPA members, your 6 - month title listing on NetGalley includes 3 NetGalley marketing programs designed to get your galley into the hands of influencers with the potential to spread the word about your new and/or upcoming book. Learn more about the new IBPA/NetGalley Book Review Express program at

Review Opportunity with F r ~ ~ copy of What Foreigners Need to Know About Americans From A To Z
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Endorsed by U.S. and foreign ambassadors and editors, What Foreigners Need To Know About America From Z To Z http://bitly.com/ForeignersAmericaUS) paints a revealing picture of America and its people. Lance Johnson, a world traveler and international teacher, studies cultural differences and the difficulties foreigners (even Americans!) have understanding crazy America, as some call it. For this book, he defines “foreigners” as anyone not sufficiently familiar with American culture to achieve success. It will benefit foreign students who are already in America, those who dream of becoming students here, those who would like to travel to America, people who do business with Americans either in America or in their home countries. It will also inform Americans who want to learn more about the U.S. and how it compares to other countries around the world.

Readers who will benefit also includes the multitudes of foreign - born, naturalized citizens who have lived in the U.S. for years and still struggle with the ways and the language. A foreigner could also be a first - generation American whose immigrant parents did not fully expose their children to American culture and they now pay the price in mainstream U.S.

Each of the 26 chapters’ brush strokes contributes to the final picture of what America is all about. For ease of understanding, the chapters are grouped into four sections. American Heritage, Culture, Business, and Language (the number one problem area foreigners say they have with American culture).

Learn more at about this new release at (http://AmericaAtoZ.com. Lance will send an e - copy of the 614 pages book to the first twenty who request one for review. Please contact A to Z Publishing at info@AmericaAtoZ.com. If you are not sure, please send questions.

I have a series of retail books that authors could benefit from. The reason? Authors are retailers, too. They must sell their books. But A Retailer’s Guide to In - Store Promotion will be especially valuable because it will give authors insight on how to convince retail outlets that a partnership (like a book signing, workshop or seminar) with them will benefit their bottom line.
