Note from Carolyn
Dear Subscribers:
Just before I left on vacation, I was notified that my Frugal Book Promoter - - Second Edition - - (http://budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo) was given a Global E - Book Award nod with an honorable mention. Many of you know I don't promote my e - books as avidly as paperback. It's not because I don't appreciate them or my e - book readers. It's really a matter of time. If you've read The Frugal Book Promoter, you also know that I advise authors to be grateful for and promote all their awards. Global Ebook Awards takes special care to be sure awarded authors at every level feel like winners. And those finalist and honorable mention logos look great on your blog and your Web site. And, yes, they’ll still impress readers.
(To see the logo this award program provides, you'll need to read this letter in its pdf format. Copy and paste the link above to get it.)
Joy, Happy Writing, Editing, and Promoting

Letters to the Editor:
Dear Carolyn:
RE: Recent Sharing with Writers newsletter on how to handle bad reviews
I read a review recently on Amazon where the reviewer said that the writer had too many typos and mistakes. This review was from an Amazon Vine book and from an Amazon Vine reviewer. I review books and products for Amazon Vine, and we're told when we get Advanced Reading Copies that they're not completely edited yet, we shouldn't diss the book for typos. There's a reviewer who's not paying attention—or something. And you're right about readers being able to judge a review and the reviewer. I read Gone by Randy Wayne White recently, and one brief review gushed about how good it was and another (Male Fantasy 101) analyzed it thoroughly and well.

Tip from The Frugal Book Promoter: You have several chances to sell your book using, ta da! Your book! The most overlooked is the back cover. Use a second title, subtitle, or pitch/logline at the top of the back cover of your book. Preferably one with keywords that don't appear in the title or subtitle on the front of your book. Keep scrolling this newsletter for your third chance to sell your book using, yep!, your book!

Tip: Lots of the writers who use my alternative review blog to extend the promotional value of their reviews don't know how to use a permalink. This is what I tell them to do to make their work on the Web more effective and longlasting.
• Go to the blog www.thenewbookreview.blogspot.com.
• Find your review.
• Click on the title.
• Go to the top of the page where the address appears in the address window. It will be longer than the one you see above and include part of the title of your post.
• Copy it.
• Take it to wherever you want to keep a permanent record of your review/promotions (like your Web site, blog, etc) and paste it.
Easy as that. ( - :

The secret to being featured in major publishing journals or magazines isn’t just in getting your book mentioned in it. It’s in promoting that you’re there. Women Writers Needed for Writing Project
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
The Right to Bare Arms will be an anthology of women’s thoughts on life and peace. I spelled it that way to help open any doors that might trigger: irony, satire, humor, fashion…
What I am looking for is a group of women to work on this anthology. The assignment would be up to 5,000 words, including a short bio/statement of intent, from each woman. The 5,000 words could be one essay or story, or it could be a combination of three to four works, including poetry. It could be deep thoughts or playfulness. I am not ready to put a deadline to this yet but, once everyone is onboard, that will be the next step. I suspect it will be enough time for even the deepest thought or slowest writing. I am inviting any of you who are interested to contact me about being included in The Right to Bare Arms. I will make the decision based on what you tell me about yourself and your interest in the project, and get back to you quickly. Georgia@ladybugbooks.com

Tech News: Microsoft is planning to go into the hardware business with a new tablet called Surface. What excites me is that it will have a "nearly flat keyboard [that] doubles as a cover [and] connects to the tablet magnetically," according to Time magazine. So far, the only drawback I see is it also comes with the new Windows 8. Sigghhh. Another update of Windows to learn!

How Much Pretending Must We Do To Cover Up What We Should Be Proud Of ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
QUESTION:
Dear Carolyn,
An interesting ethical problem has arisen for self - published authors over the last few years: the attribution of their books to fictitious publishing houses. I can think of two Kindle books whose stated publishers contain the author's initials in their names and, in at least one case, mention no publisher on the copyright page. The most important question this raises is whether it is dishonest or merely a reasonable attempt to counter the prejudice against self - published authors and books.
In defense of the practice, we can turn to the "Writers'' & Artists' Yearbook 2005", where in the section on self - publishing it says "Never admit to being [your own publisher] ... Invent a name ...."
What are your thoughts on this?
Very best wishes,
Mark
ANSWER:
Mark, in The Frugal Book Promoter I talk about great PR being a little like a florist who always puts their best blooms forward. But that is different from misleading and out - and - out lying. Besides, everyone who knows anything about publishing is on to this ruse of pretend publicists and pretend publishers anyway!
I might add that there is also much in The Frugal Book Promoter on ethics. It is certainly ethical to form (or name) your own publishing company with its own name when you self - publish. And I think if an author hires someone to do much of the publishing work and the book goes out under their name, it is helpful if it is not an immediately recognizable name associated with self - publishing. Again, putting the best blossoms forward.
BTW, something similar has often been suggested when acting as your own PR person. And I've heard that it occasionally works. But pretending to be someone you're not is a hard ruse to maintain and when (not if) the party being approached finds out, well, it tarnishes one's reputation.
To boil it down. Burnish the positive. Diminish what some might consider the negative. (I mean, we also have to face the reality that press - discrimination still exists!) But always consider your reputation. It's been said, it's the only thing we really have. And do know, that discrimination against the self - published is subsiding—slowly—as more and more authors who self - publish are doing a better job of it. I’ve seen some authors including me and my poetry partner Magdalena Ball use taglines like, “This is a proudly self - published chapbook in the time - honored tradition of poets everywhere.”

Tip: A little bird told me that Dan Poynter loves historical fiction and reads voraciously when he travels to his speaking engagements everywhere in the world. That means he reads electronic versions. What would be wrong with sending your historical fiction to him as a thank you gift for his great newsletter? What would be wrong with doing the same for other influencers in the field that you write in? Some people are in amazing positions to credibly recommend what they love.

==============================================
Tip from The Frugal Book Promoter: Another idea for using your book to sell books: Include a bonus chapter of your next book in the backmatter of the book you're publishing right now. Traditional publishers do this for books of a series all the time. It's a benefit, not an imposition.

How to Increase Your Newsletter Visibility by 100% ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
By Penny Sansevieri
Newsletters are a great way to stay in front of your audience, but I’m amazed by how many people still have no idea how to manage their own newsletter. I see sloppy copy or newsletters that haven’t been edited (am I really going to buy from someone who doesn’t have the time to edit their newsletter or make it look nice?). I also see newsletters that veer off topic so much that I instantly unsubscribe. And, my absolute favorite: how on earth did I ever end up with this newsletter in the first place?
If used correctly, newsletters can be a great way to get your message out there, offer helpful advice, and keep people in your marketing funnel. We’ve had our newsletter for ten years and it’s been a solid way to stay in front of our audience and educate them about their market and what we do as a company. Candidly, I would consider getting rid of a lot of things, but never our newsletter. It’s often the single biggest business driver to our company. It’s not easy, it requires work, but the rewards are tremendous. Here are some ideas for enhancing your newsletter and growing your audience:
• Know your audience: While this might sound trite and a bit “duh,” it’s actually more important than you might think and, ironically, quite overlooked. Many business owners who put out newsletters write more for themselves than for their audience. This is a huge mistake because, most of the time, your consumer won’t care about things the way you do. Speak to their pain, their needs and their hot buttons and most important, know exactly who they are before you start cranking out newsletter copy.
• Other newsletters: It’s important to know what other folks are putting out there in regards to newsletters. This will help you learn what you like, what you don’t like, and what might work for your market. Also, you want to really understand your space and other experts who share your arena.
• Subject lines: This is probably the most important part of any newsletter. They need to grab the reader’s attention, and if you know what your audience wants, the subject lines shouldn’t be hard. But they must speak to the needs of your reader. Of all the things going on in their lives, as it relates to whatever you are selling, what’s their biggest need right now? Answer that and you’ve got a perfect subject line.
• Who cares? Whether it’s a newsletter, a blog post, or a tweet, ask yourself: “Who cares?” If you can identify the person as your reader and the content important enough to get them to care, then you have a good topic. Remember, it’s not about you – in fact when it comes to creating great content and newsletters that rock, you don’t matter at all. Keep that in mind, and understand that this is about putting together a message that 100% benefits the people you are writing to.
• Personal notes: What prompted this article was an email note I got this morning. The subject line said “A personal request” which prompted me to open it. When I did the email started out with Dear….., and a bunch of spaces after the word “dear” because I had not entered my name into their system. Be really careful of this. Not everyone enters their name into your email list when they sign up; if they don’t, you want to try and avoid these types of emails because they look a bit odd to the recipient. A subject line that said “A personal request” along with an email that was anything but personal caused me to unsubscribe right away.
• Length: A lot of people say that they prefer shorter emails to longer ones. I say it really depends on your market. Our newsletter is pretty long but it’s packed with content and I hear from authors all the time that they keep these issues, often printing them off. Your market will dictate how long or short your newsletter should be and if you are following others in your market, this will tell you a lot.
• Colors vs. text: I’m still a big fan of text - based newsletters. I know that folks will say that color works best but I still think that color newsletters can be harder to read on your phones and often wind up in spam filters.
• Frequency: How often you deliver your newsletter will generally depend on your consumer, but a good rule of thumb is once a month at a minimum and once a week at a maximum. I would not recommend sending your end - user too many announcements and newsletters. Also, it’s a lot of content to create, so keep that in mind. If you build a loyal following you can often create special blasts with more frequency and not lose readers, but keep in mind that we’re all inundated with emails so many times, less is more.
• Editing: Please make sure your newsletter is edited. This is so important. Remember that everything is your resume. I used to know a guy in publishing who put out a newsletter that said “this is not edited.” I felt like it detracted from his message, especially when he backed up that statement with typos. Not good. Everything is your resume. If you don’t have time to send out an edited newsletter, you should consider whether or not you have the time for it at all.
• Appeal to the “skimmers:” Most people skim email these days, so appeal to that. Use short paragraphs, bullet points and strong headlines. That way your reader can glance through the newsletter without having to sift through endless copy and get to the heart of what they are looking for.
• Promote or not? I’m not a fan of a newsletter that’s all heavy promotion. You know the ones I mean, they scream “Look how fabulous I am” and then contain a lot of sales copy and special offers. I unsubscribe from those pretty quickly. Ideally you want to strike a balance. Clearly you are doing this to promote yourself and you want your readers to know what you do, what your message, book, or product is about and how they can get it. You can and should talk about this in every issue but keep in mind that a healthy balance is 95% information and 5% sales. You’ll build customer loyalty much faster this way.
Having a solid base and a consistent way to communicate with your audience can really help to optimize and increase your bottom line. A newsletter might seem like a lot of work, but in the end if it’s done right it will pay off in some pretty amazing ways.

Promote Your Holiday Gift Promotion ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
This is the time of year when you could work up a cross - promotion for the holidays. You could do it with another author (sort of a two - for - one special), or think of something on your own—a discount, a free booklet, etc.
• Any promotion you choose to do has to be promoted. I'm sure you have things you could do with what you are doing lots of anyway. Your blog, Facebook page, newsletter, Twitter, etc. etc. are examples
• Make a Web page where readers can pay by Paypal. This can drive lots of traffic to your site, so it’s not a bad thing. It’s even better if they can also pay with a credit card. Only in an emergency, should you ask them to send you a check.
• You need to have enough markup in your book to cut the price pretty drastically and still make at least a little money, usually 50%. This unique book paints a revealing picture of America for those foreigners who will benefit from a better understanding of America. Endorsed by ambassadors, teachers and editors, it even examines our culture, customs and language.
• Start promoting very early. Frequency counts.
• Someone (probably you) needs to handle the shipping. Work that into your plans.
• Alternatively, you could put together an online holiday catalog. There are suggestions for services that already do these in The Frugal Book Promoter, but if you’re good with html design, you could work on one of these cooperatively, too. There’s information on that in the Second Edition of The Frugal Book Promoter, too. (www.budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo )

Tip from A Cappela Publishing: Here is a opywriting secret to attract more clients and increase sales. Use a call to action. A call to action is where a lot of marketers miss the mark. Once you paint a picture of the outcome, you have to tell your prospect how to get in touch with you immediately. Let them know you can solve their problems and tell them how to reach you. I.e., Call Today! Book Now! Sign - up Today! Download Now! This is known as a “Call to Action”. Don’t assume your prospects will know what action you want them to take, always tell your prospect what you want them to do. Learn more about A Capella at www.acappela.com.

An Itty - Bitty Column on Writing
Season - Changing Opportunity
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
By Mindy Phillips Lawrence
September 22nd at 10:49am EDT, fall begins. Leaves will soon be turning and the weather will put away its hot days and cool down. It's a season associated with harvesting, Halloween, football, hockey and, for some, the onset of melancholia as winter approaches with its chilly blast.
It's the time of year when you're not sure what to wear – a sweater or short sleeves. Temperatures step down from a sometimes agonizing high near 100 to a more sedate set of 70s during the day. As you heat up a good hot cup of tea, it's time to seriously consider what projects you are going to work on over the wintertime.
Here are some suggestions to get your fall days off to a good start and to successfully utilize your winter planning and writing time.
• Pick a topic or project of your choice. Do some simple planning on how you will work each day on this topic you've selected .
• Make a list of books, e - books, and other research materials you will need to complete what you will be working on.
• What field trips can you make now to get your project going before freezing weather hits? Where can you gather information, photos or get interviews?
• Get a calendar out and figure out the time it will take to complete each section of your plan.
• Do an Internet search of places that might be interested in what you are working on.
• When you are searching, did you find any possible grants or other support for what you are doing?
As winter hits, you will have all the basics put together to work on you topic and have it ready for the big time when spring arrives.
And DO take time to carve a pumpkin!

I believe in social networks. Big and small. Sometimes the smaller ones are easier to make lasting and more productive contacts on. I recommend iFOGO (http://www.ifogo.com/buy/order_chj.html) which is small in part because there is a small membership fee. And, of course, my usual. No membership is good unless it's an active membership.

Can You Market Eco Chic?
Is Your Book or Topic Eco Friendly ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Not to put too much of a commercial twist on it, but how can retailers (yes, authors of books are retailers when they sell books to the general public) follow the model being set by Timberland, North Face, Adidas, Gap, and lots of other big guys? They're making ecology chic and they’re calling it Eco Chic according to Time magazine. It's an example worth copying.
More than 60 big name brands and retailers pilot a program for apparel makers. They assign a Higgs Index to the eco friendliness of clothing. It's all voluntary. Anyone can join. Anyone can apply to get a rating for their clothing item. It was only last week my workout spot (Total Woman) featured a rack of yoga clothing that is eco friendly. They were expensive but also stylish, soft to the touch and wickable.
Keep reading. I'll get to books in a minute.
I like both the idea and the inclusiveness of the thing. It's great marketing. And using it could prove profitable—for the businesses and the planet. Everyone wins. So don't we need this for other industries, too? What retail organization could help rate independent stores and chains? What organization could offer (Zagat style?) ratings on paper or home cleaning products? What organization could give a shoutout to publishers or writers who help make eco chic?
So far, the US government has nothing to do with the apparel program. Thus there's no penalty for a low score and no roses to pin on the noses of those who rate high. Well, OK. Rating high gives a company (vendor, retail store, whatever) bragging rights. And maybe a write - up in in Time?
So how is your book eco friendly? Paper eco friendly? Is a scene in it set in a national park? A character in it is a big recycling buff? The nonfiction topic is related in some way to ecology? And if you can find an angle, what can you do about it?
• Post it on your Web site.
• Put it on your business cards and bookmarks.
• Write a media release about it.
• Encourage the organizations (conferences, associated publishers, universities, etc) you belong to support and publicize anyone in the publishing industry who supports eco.
• If suitable, have it printed on your book.
• Find bloggers and other media focused on ecology and pitch them a guest blog, interview, or feature story.

I have a series of retail books that authors could benefit from. The reason? Authors are retailers, too. They must sell their books. But A Retailer’s Guide to In - Store Promotion will be especially valuable because it will give authors insight on how to convince retail outlets that a partnership (like a book signing, workshop or seminar) with them will benefit their bottom line.
