Note: I*m trying to cut down on gobbeldy gook for some subscribers. I do not use quotation marks, possessives or about any other punctuation. They seem to disagree with Yahoo and others. Thus you will find bold and caps in their stead and even omissions of stuff you just know should be there. I hope it doesn*t drive you crazy. I am also working so that more subscribers received their letter through their spam filters.

NOTE FROM CAROLYN:
Although you will still find odd punctuation in this letter to keep away the Gobbeldygook Gremlin, I am trying something new this time. I am disseminating the letter through my auxiliary site at Authors Den. If you can take a moment to let me know how it comes through to you, I would appreciate it. You*ll need to use my regular e-mail address (hojonews@aol.com) to do that.
Thanks to you all.

MORE DEAR ABBY STYLE DIALOGURE--THISTIME ON *REAL PUBLISHING" VS. *SELF-PUBLISHING*
Ok,Teach:
I need an opinion on something an agent friend of mine said that I think might be an out of date idea. Or at the least, a limited perspective.
Seems she thinks that self-publishing kills your chance of ever being published by a "REAL publisher." When I look at how few books are published by the REAL publishers each year, how little promotion they do for them AND how long it takes to get the final book to market, I don*t believe this! Who is right? Thanks.
(Kate Porter, animal activist for www.AnimalChatTV.com
and event coordinator for The Desert Woman)
Actually, both of you are right. Your friend has a traditional-academic viewpoint. There are several examples of famous writers (both in the past and in the now!) who published themselves first and then made it big with traditional publishers to say nothing of the many hundreds who published themselves and then went on to pub with traditional publishers and didn*t climb to the bestseller list so we never heard about them.
If you self-publish, and do not promote your book and it does not sell well, it might not bode well for your future possibilities with a traditional publishing. Even then, you could get around a less than stellar reputation by pulling your book from Amazon and other places and proceeding as a newbie or under a pseudonym. As you say, so MANY books are being published these days, who is going to track everyone out there?
I believe that authors should make decisions about how they publish based on their dreams, the type of book they have written (nonfiction is generally more profitable self-published, as an example, than fiction), their need for profit, the time they can invest in promotion, how long they are willing to fool around waiting for a nod from agents and a publisher and more.
Another factor in choosing a publisher is that attitude thing--the one you have already heard coming from the mouth of a friend; there is lots of prejudice against subsidy, self, vanity and POD publishing among those in the publishing business (and yes, these are all different forms of publishing--another subject for another time! (-: ).If you choose to be independent, negative attitudes are something you must contend with. There are ways to do that (also another subject for another time!). Having addressed this form of bigotry, you should also know that most readers do not know--nor do they care--how your book is published.
Best,
Carolyn

Tip: BookConnector.com has launched a new service that will help authors find unique (as well as traditional) venues for book signings and readings. The complimentary service, called Connect to Book Signing Venues, identifies venues in the author*s area. Once a reading has been held, authors can rate the venue and management according to their book signing value. Visit BookConnector on the net at http://www.BookConnector.com. Your contact is Paul Petrucci.
Tip: Canon or cannon? There are a multitude of meanings for canon (you might want to look it up) but it is often a rule or body of work. There are also several meanings for cannon but we would most often use it to mean a weapon. Thanks to Leora G. Krygier, author of When She Sleeps (www.leorakrygier.com) and trusted member of one of my critique groups for bringing this to my attention.

CREATIVITY
Eat a Croissant, Be Creative!
by Rick Benzel
I bet you didn*t know that croissants are related to creativity. Here*s how. If you look up the word creative in a dictionary, you will find that it comes from Middle English, creat, which comes from the Latin creatus, past participle of creare, meaning to make.
So, creativity signifies the idea of *making something,* which of course you knew.
Delve deeper into Merriam-Webster*s and you will note that the Latin word creare is akin to the Latin word crescere which means to grow. That is why creativity is also about growing something. But to the point; the Latin word crescere is the root of the English word crescent, as in crescent moon. And the word crescent is the origin of the French word croissant, as in that gorgeous, buttery, flaky pastry so cherished for breakfast.
What this means is that creativity and croissants actually share a deep linguistic (or shall we say culinary) connection that dates back millennia. So the next time you butter up a calorie-rich soft and moist golden croissant, rest assured that you are simply enhancing your taste for creativity!

VITAL INFORMATION FOR ALL AUTHORS: TRADITIONALLY OR ALTERNATIVELY PUBLISHED
This letter was originally sent to the authors of Star Publish from the publisher, Kristie Leigh Maguire. It is reprinted with her permission. This no order scenario is certain to happen to every author at some time, even if you don*t hear about it. If it isn*t happening now, it will when you book is phased from the bookshelves of bookstores but it still available to order. Here it is:
I have had feedback from some of you that bookstores are telling people who request to purchase your book that they can t order it. This is malarkey and makes me see red!
It is time we educated the clerks at the bookstores on how to do their job. Before we can do that the author needs the facts in order to confront the bookstores who say they cannot place an order for your book when a person requests it. Here are the facts:
Most bookstores...especially the major chains...use the distributors of either or both Ingram or Baker&Taylor. These are two of the largest distributors in the US. ALL Star books are listed with both Ingram and Baker&Taylor (Editor*s Note: It is probably that your publisher has your book listed there, too.) and they are available for ordering through either of them.. ALL Star books are listed with the standard discount of 40% to bookstores as they want and are returnable as they want.
When bookstore clerks goes to the computer to look up your book info, they may tell you that your book is listed but is not available. This is correct only to a degree. What they are looking at is the first screen on their computer. This information only tells them that the book is not stocked in their store. This does not mean that it can not be ordered. They need to go to the second screen on their computer where it will be listed and the information is there on how it can be ordered.
Do not take this lying down when a clerk at a bookstore says your book is not available. Educate them on how to do their job and have your facts in order when you do so.
It will take time after the release of your book to get the information about your book into the databases of Ingram and Baker&Taylor. Your publisher has little or no control over how long it takes them to update their systems. Allow approximately a month to be on the safe side.
Do not have people go into a bookstore and order your book if they have no intentions of actually buying it. Some authors, hopefully no Star authors, think this practice will help them get their book stocked in the bookstores. This is not the case. It is fraudulent and only gives honest publishers and authors a bad reputation...and makes a bookstore hesitant about ordering books that are published by small press publishing houses.

~Everett Beale, Rph, is the perfect author to write a novel called Fatal Addiction. (Those are pharmacist*s initials behind his name.) To be released June 25th by Jada Press, a portion of the proceeds will go to fight drug abuse. This story is fiction---or is it? Using his own thirty years experience in pharmaceuticals, Beal based his story on the amoral trend in a multi-billion dollar industry that could put our entire country in a state of Fatal Addiction while terrorists wait in the shadows. It is a tale of intrigue, mystery and danger; its dark side leavened by the love and courage of a couple who struggle against an overwhelming tide of greed and terrorism.

She says, *This is the result of reading The Frugal Book Promoter and of attending one of Carolyn*s seminars at the San Diego State University Writers* Conference. I have read it cover to cover on at least two occasions. There is so much information between the pages that I am unable to retain it all so I keep picking it up each time I get out my to do list on marketing my book. I find that by thumbing through the pages I not only reinforce what I have read before, I also get a boost from the information to keep working at my marketing.* By the way, the angle this reporter found interesting is that Kaaren did not have to look beyond her own family to come up with characters for her mystery novel. It isn*t the book that is important to editors, it is the associated ideas that can be tied to it.

FEATURED ARTICLE
On Grace Paley and Her Own Press
From a letter by Leora Skolkin-Smith
Grace Paley is one of our most famous and brilliant writers. She wrote The Little Disturbances of Man and Enormous Changes At the Last Minutes. Her work was made into a film starring Ellen Barkin a while back. But what she did for writers is important for all of us. Upset by the climate of publishing for literary writers, she put her money and energy into her own publishing endeavor. she chose only three books, luckily one was mine. Here is the link for Glad Day Books: www.gladdaybooks.com.
What is truly extraordinary is that this woman, already world-famous herself, at the age of 84 and diagnosed with cancer (she has lost a breast and the cancer, sadly, is rapidly spreading) actually did this. She investing her own money in my book and edited it herself. I just published a human interest story on this at http://mjroseblog.typepad.com/backstory/ (Your writer friends should also know about Backstory, and MJ Rose who is an amazing journalist and on the side of all of us strugglers). Her weekly column "Buzz, Hype, and Balls" tells people about the publishing business and really is a wake up call .Here, too, is more information on Grace Paley: http://www.albany.edu/writers-inst/paley.html .
Grace Paley, the first recipient of the Edith Wharton Citation of Merit, was born in the Bronx in 1922. She is the author of three highly acclaimed collections of short fiction--The Little Disturbances of Man (1959), Enormous Changes at the Last Minute (1974), and Later the Same Day (1985)--as well as three collections of poetry, including Leaning Forward, also published in 1985. Ms. Paley has taught at Columbia and Syracuse Universities, and currently teaches at both the City College of New York, where she is writer-in-residence, and Sarah Lawrence College, where she has taught creative writing and literature for 18 years. She received a Guggenheim fellowship in 1961, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1966, and an award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1970. She is a member of the Executive Board of P.E.N.
(Leora Skolkin-Smith*s fine literary novel, Edges, is available on Amazon.com and other bookstores.)
