October 13, 2005 Sharing with Writers:
From the Desks
Of Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Friends

Most recent issues of Sharing with Writers posted at FairgoeBooks in full color and with live links: http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/fairgoebooks/literaryfour.htm and you will find the *Best of Sharing with Writers* at www.ApollosLyre.com. Sharing with Writers is the official newsletter of Authors* Coalition, an organization of writers who help writers.

Note: In order to cut down on computerese I do not use (or I substitute for) many punctuation marks. They seem to disagree with Yahoo and others. I hope it doesn*t drive you crazy

I have discontinued the table of contents. If anyone finds this difficult, please let me know. I suspect, however, that it was more trouble than it was worth!

Dear Subscribers:

Ever since I published Frugal I have been urging authors to brand themselves. One way to do that is make others award that you are a professional. Professionals know the advantages of networking (thus Chambers of Commerce groups all across the nation!).

As subscribers to *Sharing with Writers* you are also members of Authors* Coalition. I urge you to ask me for your logo so you can link it on your Website, in your e-mail signature, on your stationery and more. To get it all you need do is e-mail me and ask. To check out what this organization has for you go to: http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com. After you*ve browsed, give us your input about what you*d like to see available in the future.

Dear Carolyn--Abby-Style

Just sharing with your readers. Went to an Arizona Authors book signing in Scottsdale on a Saturday. I thought since it was a club-wide signing it would be better than a cold one. Not so. Barnes & Noble had a slew of nice flyers on the bulletin board in the bathroom hallway about October signings of other writers but not a thing about our 14+ member signing. As a result no one came specifically to check us out. The coordinator at B&N scrunched us all in tables facing the front door and needless to say when people came in and saw all our eager faces, they
went the other way. As far as I could see, no club member dropped by to support us although 95% of them live in the area. I came all the way from Yuma to do the signing!

Barnes & Noble also told us that any books we sold would go through their system, we should give them an invoice, and within 90 days they would pay us. Needless to say, I just walked around and waited until the time was up and I could leave with some dignity. I don*t think any one sold a book and there were a good variety.

I*m wondering, when I do have a book signing and the bookstore orders from 10 to 20 books from my publisher that makes them very happy. If I don*t schedule any book signings, my publisher doesn*t get any orders from bookstores. You say in The Frugal Book Promoter that as a general rule you don*t like book signings because they aren*t profitable and I can see that, but shouldn*t authors who are not self-published try to get bookstores to order from their publisher?

By the way, I met Elizabeth Taylor at the book signing in Scottsdale, and she made my day. She gave me a $15 CD about freelancing and sent a 19 page email on marketing which I haven*t read yet. What a wonderful person. She knows you.
Pinkie Paranya, author of Tiana Gift of the Moon

Dear Pinkie:
Until you have a big name or at least a reasonably large following in the local of a sponsoring bookstore, book signings tend to be disappointing. In Frugal I give authors a long list of ways to make a difference and in my new blog (in its infancy) I work with authors on how to make book fairs successful (the remedies for unsatisfactory ones are similar for both!)

Your story is one that happened all over the nation on that particular Saturday, I*m sure. Unhappy authors. Ineffective bookstores. Lack of advance promotion, cross-promotion or much else that could help. I mean, fliers by the bathroom? What good would that do even if your event had been listed!!!????? Appalling! Here are the basics:

Book signings are do-it-yourself projects. You will need to do the work and monitor the bookstore*s events manager yourself.
Beyond that, please read those chapters on signings and fairs in Frugal and check out my blog frequently at http://redenginepress.com/chjohnson. Tailor what you see there in ways that will fit your own event.

And your question? Your publisher--if he or she is smart--should support you in selling books. Why should she care how you do it as long as you use ethical means to put yourself and your book before the public?

Kathe*s Kollection:
Tips You Can Use

Editor*s Note: Kathe will be contributing tips on a regular basis--many of them gleaned from her reading and conferences she attends:

1. Don*t confuse your readers with links all over the page. One thing should logically lead to another. Navigation and flow should be intuitive and easy to follow. Leave plenty of white space to allow the eye to *breathe*.

2. Remember, content is everything for a good website. Be direct. Tell people to *check this out*. Solve problems for them and be a good resource.

3. Make navigation easy. Use the three click rule: it should take no more than three clicks for someone to get to where they want on your website.

Tip: Here*s a tip from Janet Elaine Smith, author of Pampas, (http://janetelainesmith.com). If you are thinking of using a pen name, go into your local bookstore and check out the area (by genre, then alphabetically) where your book would sit on the shelves. Then find your favorite author, or the bestselling one in your section. Pick your name according to who you would sit next to. In my case, I lucked out with using my real name--Smith. I sit very comfortably right between Bertrice Small and Danielle Steele!

Article: Targeting Promotion
How an Author Can Get Successful Press with Free marketing
By Michelle Dunn
My name is Michelle Dunn and I have written 5 books. I have just signed a contract with Entrepreneur Press to write a book for their Ultimate Series. I have been featured on NPR, in The Wall Street Journal, on the CBS Early Show, and in many magazines and newspapers nationwide. I have also never paid for advertising.

How is this possible you ask? Since I sold my collection agency to write full time, my new job description could be writer, author, publisher, marketer or starving artist. Hence my need for free or low cost publicity or marketing. When I sold my agency, I started a diary of everything I have done to market myself and my books. I know there is a great need for this type of information out there and can*t wait to finish this book and share it with everyone. In just 9 months, I have created a whirlwind of publicity for myself, all for free. I want to share what I have learned so far with you.

One of the most important things I did was find out who is my target audience. It doesn*t end there, you must find out details about your target audience. What types of books, magazines and newsletters do they read? Where do they work? What are their hobbies? Are they married, single, women, men, both, have children, pets? When they read these publications, what are they looking for? Do they attend trade shows? Which ones? You want to learn everything you can about them. Then you want to position yourself so that you are everywhere they are.

Once you find out what they read, you must read the same materials. See if you can contribute articles or do a link exchange with that publication. Networking is a key factor in your marketing efforts. Networking can be free. I purchased a notebook and put tabs on the top, online e-zines, magazines, TV, newspapers, radio, places to post free press releases and places to post free articles. You want to then create lists of your media contacts for each medium. Everyone*s list will be different; you can start your list by going through the local phone book. Find your local radio stations, newspapers, and magazines, visit their websites or call and get the editors name. Introduce yourself and put their name in your notebook. Do this for each medium in your field. For example, most of the magazines and e-zines in my notebook are credit and debt related. So your notebook will be customized to what you are selling. You will be adding to your notebook all the time, each time you make a new contact. For the Fr** places to post press releases or articles, you can do a search on Yahoo! Or Google or visit http://www.michelledunn.com/published/articles/marketing/free-places-to-post-your-.shtml to start posting your articles for right now. If you want a list to post your press releases for fr*e*, visit http://www.michelledunn.com/published/articles/marketing/free-places-to-post-your--2.shtml

Find out what information they want, and provide it. This is the best way to get more traffic, publicity and business. If you provide something that there is a need for rather than add to a swamped market, your chances of success are much greater.

Tip: Oprah made her change-of-mind regarding the selection of contemporary authors official for the New York Times: Here is the quote: *I wanted to open the door and broaden the field,* Ms. Winfrey said in an interview. *That allows me the opportunity to do what I like to do most, which is sit and talk to authors about their work. It*s kind of hard to do that when they*re dead.* Sorry, you*re going to have to find your own way to get to her. (-:

Success Story: From Michael Wallach (james59@verizon.net): Having written a book that was probably not of appeal to the masses entitled How To Get Arrested: A Motivational Story for Actors, and not having a traditional publisher or distributor that would get my book into the bookstores, I decided to investigate ways to accomplish my goal of selling my new book directly to the consumer. So, while early website sales have been satisfactory (Amazon.com, etc.), I looked into bookstores that sold titles in my book*s genre. Samuel French was such a store.

I went over to their Sunset Boulevard location with a copy of my book and asked for the manager. She came out of her office to speak to me. I mentioned my background for writing such a book and told her why How To Get Arrested would be valuable to her customers (many of whom are actors and other industry professionals).
She looked over the book, apparently liked what she saw, asked me for ten copies to start selling immediately, and decided that the book deserved a launch at her Studio City location (and ordered 150 copies from my POD publisher). She thought of placing the first ten copies in the Breaking into Hollywood section but instead put the books in the front of the store on a shelf marked New Releases. (I sincerely thanked her and additionally, asked her if I could give her a book and inscribe it to her personally. She seemed a bit nonplussed but flattered, and so I did.)

The next day a friend of mine walked into the store and inquired about the title. The salesclerk immediately went into a spiel about a wine and cheese book launch party for the book!

Incidentally, the book launch is on November 8th at 7:30 at Samuel French, 11963 Ventura Boulevard (parking all over). It would be my pleasure if you could be there to share my excitement. (Their website: www.samuelfrench.com/store/. Ill soon to be at www.howtogetarrested.com ).

Promotion Note:
1. Target bookstores that match your book when you can.
2. The more personal the contact, the more successful.

The Many Forms of Talent:
The Art of Collaboration

By Joyce Faulkner

When I was in Africa, I learned a story about the honey-guide bird and the ratel more commonly known as a honey badger. The honey-guide has a, pardon the expression, bird*s eye view of the countryside. The badger has sharp teeth and long claws that allow him to tear into wood and hardened mud. The bird has a taste for wax and the badger loves honey which gives the two of them a common goal -- finding beehives. Their interests are different enough so that there is no competition should they come upon one, so these two little critters work together. When the honey-guide spots the treasure, it creates a ruckus leading the badger to that location. The badger tears into the beehive and eats the honey, leaving the wax for the bird to collect. It*s an amazing example of cross-species collaboration.

As writers and business people, it is in our best interest to recognize our own strengths and weaknesses. That*s not always easy to do. With an intensity matched by few other professions, we are protective of our work. We worry that someone will steal our ideas. We fall in love with our own words to the point where we can*t see any flaws. We resist the suggestions of others because we think we know what*s best for our projects.

In fact, those of us who succeed in this business do so because we recognize the value of a team. We welcome the talents of others into our lives and our projects with grace and enthusiasm knowing that the final product will be all the more professional, creative and unique for their input.

For example, a novel needs a variety of talents to bring it together aside from the author. Having help with the research is handy and expands the range of your inquiry. Having an editor evaluate the content of your work makes it richer and more relevant. A copy editor ensures that your story is well constructed and your writing is grammatically correct. A proofreader finds typos, misspellings, word misusage and other tiny errors that we don*t see after fifty odd revisions. Agents find buyers for your manuscripts. Publishers create the actual product for sale. Then your team grows ever larger. Designers define the format, artists illustrate. Marketers plan your sales strategy. Publicists help you implement it. Reviewers create demand for your novels. They also give you feedback. Booksellers get your books into the hands of readers. Readers tell their friends about you -- or, horror of horrors, they don*t.

It*s a cast of thousands -- an army of people contributing to your project. Like the honey badger in search of a honeycomb, we aren*t likely to find the treasure unless we trust others with different perspectives to guide us.
