Newsletter Dated: 12/8/2005 3:00:12 PMSubject: [Sharing with Writers] Let's All Figure Out Amazon's Buy X Get Y Program Together
December 8, 2005 Sharing with Writers:
From the Desks
Of Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Authors* Coalition Friends
========================================================
Most recent issues of Sharing with Writers are posted at Fairgo E-Books in full color and with live links http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/fairgoebooks/literary.htm. You will find the *Best of Sharing with Writers* at Apollos Lyre (www.ApollosLyre.com). Sharing with Writers is the official newsletter of Authors* Coalition, an organization of writers who help writers.
========================================================
Note: In order to cut down on computerese I do not use (or I substitute for) many punctuation marks. They seem to disagree with Yahoo and others. I hope it doesn*t drive you crazy.
=======================================================
Note from Carolyn:
Dear Authors* Coalition Members and Subscibers:
We haven*t talked only a little about distributors in this newsletter. Having said that, I received a plea from a couple of our subscribers this week (a writing team) and thought it might set in motion a conversations and that--just maybe--one of you could help them. I*m also thinking that if any of you have distributors, either national or regional, some of your fellow members of Authors* Coalition would appreciate your sharing. Here is the letter I received:
Carolyn: We have been enjoying your newsletters,
and wonder if you (or any of your constituents)
would recommend a distributor for our book? Due to
the nature of the book, *Sailing the Seven C*s of
Marriage* as a Christian book, we are looking for
an agent dealing mainly with Christian bookstores.
Anyone can check out our book at: marriageship.com. There are also good recommendations on amazon.com, but not enough people know of the book! It was published by a POD publisher. Thanks for any assistance, Revs. Don & Anne Bloch (pairofdox@bellsouth.net ).

PS: I*ve started a new section in this issue. It is on independent bookstores that subscribers recommend as author-friendly rather than as friendly only to traditionally published authors. See the first one today recommended by a member of my Chevy Chase Critique Group, Emily Heebner Young.
=======================================================
No part of this newsletter is paid advertising. At the suggestion of a subscriber who reads every issue of Sharing with Writers, you will find brand new material so noted with a pointing finger.

Opportunities:
Opportunity to Listen to Our FIRST AudioClass Fr**:
Carolyn and Friends are at it again! Our Teleclasses are now under contract with Double Dragon Press !. There is still a free sample at http://www.double-dragon-ebooks.com/single.asp?ISBN=DDP00000001QP. Think of it this way: a good promotion or writing seminar would cost way more than an MP3 or CDRom . Think of it this way, too! What a great gift these would be for a fellow writer. Go to http://www.double-dragon-ebooks.com/audio.asp. and Watch for more subjects on craft, tech and promotion in 2006.
------
Freelance Opportunity:
This from longtime Web-friend and fellow authors (whose enthusiasm, promptness, personality and writing I highly recommend):
It just occurred to me that you probably have more than a few talented starving writers on your list. I am looking for more freelance writers to join our team. We looking for people who can do book ghost writing (fiction, financial, self-help, religious, biography, etc) and editing (websites, books, corporate materials). I estimate that by this time next year, we will be brokering one ghost-writing contract per week, in addition to the translation and editing we are doing. I hope to have 3 - 5 writers working with us by then, meaning that they will have to do very little marketing themselves (time they can be better spent writing their own books, playing with their kids, or traveling?).

Or if you are a writer that would rather learn by reading, the course, *Think Like a Producer* is available. For more info, email cynthia@star-style.com , www.star-style.com .

Opportunity to Win, Promote and Help Those Weeping in Katrina*s Aftermath:
A weekly writing contest at Belinda*s Writing News. help others while you help yourself get published and build your platform! Portions of the $5.95 entry fee, will be shared between the winners in three categories and two funds integral to the rebirth of Louisiana. See below for more information on the contest and on Belinda*s report on her hometown. Her site is http://belinda-y-hughes.tripod.com/
The stats:
- Deadline: Midnight Friday weekly. This week*s theme is open. Others will be declared in future issues. All submissions must be in the body of an email, with *Contest Submission* in the subject line.
- No previously published submissions, but simultaneous submissions are OK. Just kindly let us know.
- Limit 3 entries per person, one page per entry.
- Include a cover letter with a short bio and all relevant contact information.
- All submissions must be titled. Categories are: Poetry, Flash Fiction and Nonfiction/Essay.
- $5.95 fee, payable via http://www.paypal.com/ to Author_Belinda@yahoo.com.
- Prize is publication and a portion of proceeds. While authors will retain all rights, winning pieces will be published in one BWN issue and archived as part of that issue.
- A portion of proceeds will be contributed to my church*s Hurricane Relief Fund, which is now helping to rebuild Cameron Parish in Coastal Southwest Louisiana, and the Sowela Foundation, which is dedicated to the benefit of Louisiana Technical College-Sowela Campus in Lake Charles. Both were decimated by Hurricane Rita (9-23-05) and are still struggling against mighty odds to recover.
Most of Cameron Parish*s residents are still barefoot and homeless as we now enter our third month after Rita. Their homes were washed out to the Gulf, the beach swept clean of anything and everything but the parish courthouse.
Sowela has historically been a strong member of our community, helping locals train for better paying jobs to support their families, and now faces possible closure due to harsh state budget cuts, which unfairly target it despite a strong recovery effort on the part of the community. Sowela has spent the last three years becoming an accredited community college, up from a humble vo-tech, and only recently acquired the two-year associate*s degree programs from the local four-year university. They also are home to the one team selected from among many by our state*s government to travel the state and teach community college teachers.
After being the only representative of our country to bid and win a contract to assist Tanzania in assembling their first community college and training its faculty, Sowela is currently fighting for its life, despite the fact that it trains employees for the fourth largest refinery in the country, as well as nurses and auto mechanics, which are currently in short supply locally, the greater portion of the populace having relocated by the hundreds of thousands to Texas, namely Dallas.
I was born and raised and live in and deeply love Lake Charles, LA, and want to help my home. What better way than to create a win-win and help y*all, too?

Opportunity to Win a Seat at the Sold-Out Erma Bombeck Writers* Workshop:
This is the very one I will be presenting at. This year*s Erma Bombeck Writing Competition is now open. In honor of the competition*s 10th anniversary, each of the four first-place winners will receive a complimentary registration for the sold-out Erma Bombeck Writers* Workshop, to be held March 23-25, 2006, at the University of Dayton (Ohio). Details can also be found at: http://www.humorwriters.org/2006EssayContest.html
-------------
Opportunity for Editors to Know YOU as an Expert:
Francine Silverman, editor/publisher of Book Promotion Newsletter, is helping authors gain publicity for a low fee.
She started by emailing Expert Sheets to the media. Within a very short time, here*s what she accomplished:
The workplace columnist at the Chicago Tribune interviewed Heather Resnick; the garden columnist at The Daily Oklahoman interviewed Linda Allen; the food columnist at the Boston Herald plans to review Karen Adler*s cookbooks for its site*s annual holiday gift guide; the parenting columnist at the Seattle Times is interested in reviewing Jayne Jaudon Ferrer about her books, the columnist for parents and kids at the Boston Herald wants to do a Q&A with Christine Hohlbaum and a syndicated business columnist interviewed Cliff Hakim. Somos Primos, a website dedicated to Hispanic heritage and diversity issues, is placing information on Ben Romero on its website in January.
The most recent contact with was Tracy-Jane Newton, the reviewer at Alternative-Read.com. After reading that she reviews books on spirituality, I sent her an Expert Sheet of subscribers who write on that subject. She selected the books of four authors to begin with.
Fran*s publicity services are done entirely on the Internet and mainly for print coverage. The fee is $25 in advance, with a guarantee of at least one interview, placement on a website, or book review, in two months. If that does not happen, the fee would be carried over until that occurs.
If interested, contact Fran at franalive@optonline.net

Tracings my chapbook of poetry, should be in your hands by now. If you ordered a copy and did not receive it, please let the publisher know (www.finishinglinepress.com). I am pleased with the presentation: fine lineny paper, sparkly end sheets, a satin ribbon book marker. It*s not too late to order a book of poetry for hostess gifts at Christmas. What nicer gift than a bottle of wine, a book of poetry and a rose. E-mail me (HoJoNews@aol.com) for directions or go to http://www.members.aol.com/finishingbooks/index.html, for my publisher*s shopping page.

Feature Article
Amazon*s BXYG Program
Do you all know about Amazon*s BXYG
(Buy X, Get Y program)? I haven*t used it but it may be something you will want to try. It is relatively expensive so if you have used it, I*d like to know what you thought and if you could see traceable results. Here is what this program is, straight from the Amazon screen (thought that would be the easiest way to explain it--one with the least possibility of misunderstanding):
The Buy X, Get Y (BXGY) Program
Want to increase the visibility of your title on Amazon.com? Feature it in the Best Value (also known as Better Together) section of another title*s detail page.
What to do:
1. Pick the one book you*d like to pair your book with:
* Consider whether your pairing makes the additional purchase a natural add-on for the customer. Consider whether the pairing makes sense in terms of subject matter and audience.
* Co-op-funded BXGY pairings are exclusive and one ISBN may only be paired with one other in a given timeframe.
* In general, the higher the sales ranking of your potential pairing title, the more likely people are to see the promotion. The following links will help you to find topselling titles:
Books: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/new-for-you/top-sellers/-/books/
Music: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/new-for-you/top-sellers/-/music/
DVD: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/new-for-you/top-sellers/-/dvd/
Does it seem the titles you think are perfect for a BXGY already have pairings? What*s going on?
As a retailer, Amazon.com uses automated services to suggest new items to customers. For this, we use what is called an unpaid BXGY. These titles are available for paid BXGYs, subject to availability.
Here*s how to tell the difference. Paid BXGYs:
* Offer an additional 5% discount
* Bold and underline the titles of the books
* Are titled *Best Value* while non-merchandised BXGYs are titled *Better Together*
2. Pick the calendar month you would like to run the pairing:
* Nominations for the program must be submitted one month before the desired start date, but not more than three months in advance.
* When is the best time to run your promotion? Will a BXGY promotion be more effective at a different time of year or after a new title is released?
* Are there other marketing campaigns that you are running separately? Time the programs so they are running simultaneously.
3. Complete and submit BXGY nomination form:
* You will be notified when your promotion has been approved. You will then receive an invoice for your promotion.
* Do not submit nominations for pairings unless they are finalized. You cannot change pairings once payment is received.
4. Cost and payment:
* Pricing schedule: The cost for small vendors to run a BXGY promotion varies depending on the rankings of the paired titles:
*If a product in the pairing is ranked in the top 250 titles on Amazon.com, the cost is $750 for one month.
*If a product is ranked below the top 250, the cost is $500 for one month.
* Do not send payment until you receive an invoice.
5. Other considerations:
* Although we will work with you to help make your promotion a success, we cannot guarantee a response rate. Your submission of this form acknowledges that you have read and understand this.
* We are unable to provide metrics on the BXGY program since we are not able to share sales figures for another publisher*s titles. We are happy to provide you with a sell-thru report of your title once your promotion has been completed.
* Print-on-demand titles: Please be aware that POD titles tend to go out of stock more often than other books. Extra lead time is required to ensure inventory. In addition, we are unable to alter our POD ordering procedures for merchandised titles.
Additional options are available for those merchandising a DVD/VHS or music product. Please contact sv-video@amazon.com for more information.
If you have any questions, please be sure to review the FAQs at www.amazon.com/coop by clicking the FAQs link.
