Subject: [Sharing with Writers] Movin' On "Up"--Achieving the Traditional Dream

February 4, 2006: Sharing with Writers:
From the Desks
Of Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Authors* Coalition Friends
~~~:.~~~.:~~~.:~~~:.~~~.:~~~.:~~~:.~~~.:~
Most recent issues of Sharing with Writers are posted with live links at Fairgo E-Books: http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/fairgoebooks/literary.htm. You will find the *Best of Sharing with Writers* at Apollos Lyre (www.ApollosLyre.com). Sharing with Writers is the official newsletter of Authors* Coalition, an organization of writers who help writers.
Note: In order to cut down on computerese, I do not use (or I substitute for) many punctuation marks. They seem to disagree with Yahoo and others. I hope it doesn*t drive you crazy.
~~~:.~~~.:~~~.:~~~:.~~~.:~~~.:~~~:.~~~.:~

Note from Carolyn:
Dear Authors* Coalition Members and Subscribers:

Let*s talk publishing. I will be speaking and conducting a workshop for the American Board of Hypnotists this month. That may surprise you but the subjects are aligned with writing, not hypnotherapy. More professionals are publishing these days and my workshop subject will be *Jumpstart Your Credibility and Salability: Publish a Book!*

That is a subject that could have hardly been taught a few years ago because accessibility to publishing was so poor. Even what was called vanity publishing was expensive. Of course, publishing is still not easy but there are many alternatives today.

In that spirit, this week*s *Sharing with Writers* includes a site Michael J. Wallach found that will submit queries to traditional publishers for you. Of course, you can do it yourself but this service--judging from the results Michael got--is apparently read by editors and publishers.

To be published traditionally is the dream of many, perhaps your dream. I personally have not found it all it is cracked up to be. In *Poets and Writers* M.J. Rose says that many books published by large, well-known presses are not *published* at all, merely printed, for publishing by definition includes the concept of putting a book before the public and that includes promoting it.

Based on the failure of many publishers--large, small, traditional, subsidy and even sometimes self-publishers--I wrote *The Frugal Book Promoter* to give authors the sound and detailed information they need to start out or to grow their promotion efforts.

There is not one right way to publish. Authors should consider their goals for their book--both monetary and emotional--their pocketbooks, and the title and genre of their book before making a decision. That*s what I will be talking to professionals about and it is one of the subjects I will be addressing in a new book I am working on with Joyce Faulkner and Pat Avery. It*s working title? *The Complete Writer Publishes,* second in a series after *The Complete Writer.*

In the meantime, we have this suggestion from Michael--if, that is, your dream is to hold an advance from one of the nation*s big publisher in your hands. I warn you, though, don*t give up on your promotion and networking campaign in the meantime. Chances are you*ll need it!

Best,
Carolyn Howard-Johnson

Tip:

One of the students in my last class at UCLA was June Casagrande. I have become her fan for she writes a grammar column for my local newspaper with accuracy (usually (-: ) and wit (always!). This week she minds us that in sentences such as *You may not be any better educated than I,* you have some leeway to use either *me* or *I* and be correct either way. I can*t reprint June*s entire column; you*ll have to trust me but if you say *than me* you don*t have to blush with embarrassment, back up, and correct yourself. And in writing, you*ll want to choose the better usage, depending on the kind of writing you are doing or the character of the person in whose mouth you put it. We*ll discuss that last sentence at a future date. (-:
June is also the author of the newly released *Grammar Snobs Are Great Big Meanies: A Guide to Language for Fun and Spite* now available on Amazon.com.

Letter to the Editor:

As a means of learning, I purchased your book, The Frugal Book Promoter, some time ago and I have read it numerous times. I can*t thank you adequately or thank you enough for the immense help this was to me as a fledgling author and soon to be published author of From *Nam With Love due out later this year.

Bookseller Catalog Op

The Authors* Coalition booth at the LA Times Festival of Books will be sending a catalog to booksellers. A cross-promotion effort with each participating author sharing names of bookstores, this catalog will be sent to bookstore buyers (we*re shooting for 500) and some local press. All those participating in the booth will be included but we have room for a few more participants in the catalog. Joyce Faulkner, a member of the AC Board of Directors and our faithful Webmaster and publisher-of-materials, sends this offer along to you:

*…if you want to have an ad in this catalog, here are the prices: A full page ad is $600, one half pages is $300, and one quarter page is $150 and one eight of a page is $75. These all include cover art, ISBN, a short blurb and your Website address. If you want just a text notice with title, authors* name, ISBN and tend words, that add is $10. Businesses are welcome to purchase ads as well.*

So, if you have questions or want to participate, contact her at katieseyes@aol.com. Please put *Book Fair Catalog* in the subject line.

As you know, postage rates just went up and color printing is expensive. We are pleased to offer these rates to AC members and believe that the catalog will keep the images of AC authors* books in the minds of many of the movers in the book business. Further, high participation will allow us to send the catalog to more bookstores.

Author FAQ
What types of material can I list as an Amazon Short?
Any previously unpublished short-form work (2,000 - 10,000 words, fiction or nonfiction) you*ve created that your readers would find interesting. An Amazon Short could be a single short story, an update on a well-loved character, a compelling speech, additional material that enriches your published works, or even your commentary on your work or other subjects. Some authors have chosen to treat this as a *laboratory* for experimentation with new genres, themes, etc. We are open to creative ideas for new work.
What if I want to contribute more than one piece?
Once you are accepted into the Amazon Shorts program, you are free to contribute as many pieces as you wish. We are especially interested in getting new material from you on a regular basis. Please allow a turnaround time of approximately three weeks from the time you deliver the material to the time you can expect it to appear on the site.
Can I sell my material elsewhere? Can I publish it later? Will I continue to own the rights to it?
Authors retain the rights to their material. However, we do require that all Shorts be exclusive to Amazon.com for a minimum of six months.
Can anyone submit an Amazon Short?
We are accepting work from a diverse group of authors. In order to be eligible for participation you must be a published author with at least one book currently for sale on Amazon.com. If you are an agent, author, publisher, or editor, and you would like to be considered for inclusion in this program, please contact us at amazon-shorts@amazon.com.
Does this material get reviewed by customers just as books do?
Absolutely. The digital content listed in Amazon Shorts is just like other media products that Amazon.com sells to customers and is subject to the same privileges and conditions that are afforded to books, CDs, and other media products.
Can authors promote their Shorts on their own Web sites?
Yes. Authors who have their own Web sites are encouraged to join the Amazon.com Associates Program. Through this program, you can use your own Web site to drive traffic to your Amazon Shorts as well as any books you have for sale on Amazon.com. This is especially worthwhile for writers who have active or well-frequented Web sites.

More Website Reminders:

1. Text on your site should be short and punchy. Use no more than three to five paragraphs, and break up the text with artwork, photos, blank space.
2. Update your Website frequently. It keeps people coming back and increases your Google rating.
3. For sales, use Paypal.com, Book Clearing House at BookCH.com., or Amazon.com. These are all trusted sources.

Opportunity Mentioned in This Issue*s Introductory Letter:

Idea for Those Who Want to Move On

Michael J. Wallach, author of *How to Get Arrested: A Motivational Story For Actors--TM* has found what may be the site of the century--for authors, anyway. Michael says, *They send out your query and apparently publishers and agents actually read them! They probably sent a hundred or more email queries, and I received 7 emails requesting to see my book (and proposal). Two of the requests were from the same company, both executive editors at St. Martin*s Press.

*The service is not free but seems reasonable. They charge about $160. to send e-mails to maybe 50-200 or more editors and publishers whether it*s in manuscript form or a self-published book.

*They charge an additional $90 to write the query letter if you want that. I paid for it because I wanted to see what they would do with the query, what tended to work. After receiving the query letter written by them, I reworked it extensively. (The person who writes the query, of course, doesn*t read the book or manuscript and is not aware of the surrounding circumstances. She only asks for information (materials, website, etc.) about the book or manuscript and then uses that information to compose a query letter. For me, it certainly needed rewriting since she was not knowledgeable about acting/entertainment business nor did she know much about me or the book.*

This site*s claim to fame is the new *Nanny* book.
