February 14, 2006: Sharing with Writers:
From the Desks
Of Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Authors* Coalition Friends
~~~:.~~~.:~~~.:~~~:.~~~.:~~~.:~~~:.~~~.:~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most recent issues of Sharing with Writers are posted with live links at Fairgo E-Books: http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/fairgoebooks/literary.htm. You will find the *Best of Sharing with Writers* at Apollos Lyre (www.ApollosLyre.com). Sharing with Writers is the official newsletter of Authors* Coalition, an organization of writers who help writers.
Note: In order to cut down on computerese, I do not use (or I substitute for) many punctuation marks. They seem to disagree with Yahoo and others. I hope it doesn*t drive you crazy.
Note from Carolyn:
Dear Authors* Coalition Members and Subscribers:
Let*s talk creative promoting.
Kristie Leigh Maguire and I are proud of the Reach for the Stars contest we ran before Christmas. Our goals were two-fold, to reward those who spend heart on promoting (we all spend our love on writing!) and, in the spirit of *Sharing with Writers,* let them share their ideas with others. OK. Make that three. We also wanted the prizes to be more than a pat on the back and a banner--we wanted something that would allow them and others to keep promoting throughout 2006 and beyond.
Kristie and I had cross-promoted with 26 authors with an e-cookbook a few years ago that kept lending itself to new promotion efforts with every season that has something to do with cooking--that*s almost every holiday, if you think about it! (By the way, it is still available to you for the moment it takes to download at my site, http://carolynhowardjohnson.com. Just scroll down to the bottom of the home page and click!)
Anyway, our winners were named last fall and now we have a new chance to make them STARS, along with the many authors who supported the contest by donating copies of their books on writing including *Sharing with Writers* subscribers, Joyce Faulkner, Pat Avery, and Mindy Lawrence, co-authors of *The Complete Writer,* Shel Horowitz (also of FRUGAL fame), Peggi Ridgway who knows more about websites than any bod has the right to, and Fran Silverman, who collaborated with me on a Christmas special offer.
That*s what Authors* Coalition is all about, authors helping authors. So here is our offer to you: Not only a no-cost copy of this book full of these winning book promoters* great ideas, a complete chapter on book signings from *The Frugal Book Promoter* and more, but, if you think you can use it your promotions, on your site, as gifts to your fellow writers--any way at all--it is yours to pass along. Just ask and I*ll send you a .pdf file.
Go to http://starpublish.com
Download and then put on your thinking caps. It*s time to have some fun!
Please note: Star Publish recently lost most of its site including her bookstore. Please come back to visit again when Kristie has reconstituted some of it!
Best,
Carolyn Howard-Johnson
Tip: Fair season is coming and though I*m not all that sold on spending money on souvenir items, many authors are dedicated to it. Letter to the Editor:
Things are certainly moving at a fast pace now and am beginning to picture the LA Times Festival of Books in my mind. As you suggested from the beginning, the sum total of what is being put together and carried out is so much more than merely having a booth. If I hadn*t been taught to stay away from cliches, I*d say the whole amounts to more than the sum of its parts. There I*ve gone and said it anyway.
Something to Think About:
Shel Horowitz has designed a program to encourage everyone to keep ethics in mind in all we do. His message is designed for people in business (that*s us writers whether we like to think of ourselves like that or not!) With the Frey scandal in the news the time is ripe for passing his idea forward. Go to: http://www.business-ethics-pledge.org
Opportunities:
Bookseller Catalog Op
The Authors* Coalition booth at the LA Times Festival of Books will be sending a catalog to booksellers. A cross-promotion effort with each participating author sharing names of bookstores, this catalog will be sent to bookstore buyers (we*re shooting for 500) and some local press. All those participating in the booth will be included but we have room for a few more participants in the catalog. Joyce Faulkner, a member of the AC Board of Directors and our faithful Webmaster and publisher-of-materials, sends this offer along to you:
*…if you want to have an ad in this catalog, here are the prices: A full page ad is $600, one half page is $300, one quarter page is $150 and one eighth of a page is $75. These all include cover art, ISBN, a short blurb and your Website address. If you want just a text notice with title, authors* name, ISBN and ten words, that ad is $10. Businesses are welcome to purchase ads as well.*
So, if you have questions or want to participate, contact her at katieseyes@aol.com. Please put *Book Fair Catalog* in the subject line.
Tip: From Connie Gotsch, author of *Snap Me a Future:* To keep your e-mail query from being a victim of the delete button, include the title, genre, and where readers can buy the book. Some review sites don*t specifically call for this, but apparently all want it -- according to one reviewer -- who was kind enough to alert me, though her site didn*t spell out such requirements.* By the way, many reviewers and editors like the authors* own e-mail address as part of the writer*s signature. It makes it easier for them to do their record-keeping.
Gift for Your Love: A book of poetry at Valentine*s is traditional. *Tracings* is chapbook of poetry, (www.finishinglinepress.com), both personal and nostalgic. NEWS:
This from the American Booksellers Association newsletter:
Barnes&Noble.com Now Charging Sales Tax on Online Purchases
*With no fanfare, Barnes & Noble has begun collecting sales tax on online purchases made through its Barnes&Noble.com website. The company website currently notes, *In accordance with applicable law, Barnes&Noble.com collects tax in all but the following states: Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, New Mexico, Vermont, and the District of Columbia.*
What does this mean for authors? I think one advantage that most readers enjoyed by ordering online has been taken away from them; thus it may be that B&N is trying to force more people to their brick and mortars and away from the Web--thus away from Amazon and other online stores. Or, they may simply have been advised to do so by their attorneys or both. In any case it cannot be good news for those authors who sell primarily online and it is good news for the big chains as well as independent bookstores for they will no longer have to compete with no tax policies, especially if they spread.
_____________________________________________________
Tip: A short time ago, authors were all astir because Amazon offered used books on their site. Amazon was smart enough to see that used books had been around a very, very long time and that, if you could fight the trend, better to join it. Authors were not so quick to figure that out. In *The Frugal Book Promoter* I suggest that we utilize this feature by buying books cheaper than we could get them from our publisher (which sometimes happens). If they arrive slightly soiled, mark them *ARC* or *Review Copy* and recycle them; if they are in perfect condition, use them as you would new books. You save money. You raise your sales rating on Amazon. You take another *used* book out of circulation. You win! ______________________________________________________
News from the LA Times:
Amateur Readers Podcast Public Domain Books
Amateur readers like Kara Shallenberg in Oceanside, CA. is transforming public domain books into podcasts and, though not a professional actor, is doing a pretty credible job according to the LA Times (Sunday, Jan 15, 2006). Hers are available at no cost at www.librivox.org, a new site in August. So far it has 15 novels along with other works including essays, poems and more. It is an all-volunteer site and each entry includes a link to Project Gutenberg (www.gutenberg.org ) which now has more then 17,000 selections available.
Kara also posts her own recording to her own site, http://kayray.org . Mmmm, I*m seeing all kinds of opportunities here for charitable giving, for promotion, for encouraging literacy. Podcasting, of course is a trend and my author friend Kathe Gogolewski has done several to let authors sample our audio tapes recorded as classes for authors. You can find a sample here: http://tri-studio.com/kathegogolewskiAUDIOCLASSES.html
So why couldn*t you bring your own book to readers the same way--free or otherwise. On Librivox or on your own site. It seems everyone else is getting into the act!
Patrika*s Tips:
Selling to Libraries: Library purchases usually depend upon the nature of the community being served and the goals of each library. Acquisition librarians evaluate books based on local economic conditions and the needs and interests of their patrons. They do buy best sellers but are more interested in titles of good quality that fit a well-defined need in their collection. This might include large-print editions for the visually handicapped or Spanish translations for a nearby Hispanic population. Try to find out the demographics of the library before pitching. Find out more at http://nces.ed/gov/surveys/libraries/librarysearch
Feature:
Write E-mails that Get Opened:
Pass the Filter Test
By Shel Horowitz
Did you know that 22 percent of nonspam e-mail doesn*t get delivered? That means two e-mails lost for every nine sent out. It*s because the spammers have killed e-mail both by burying the real stuff and by causing most ISPs to filter the mail.
We*ve already talked about the From and Subject lines. The third key in writing e-mails that get opened is to send e-mails that don*t get caught in spamcatcher filters--because if you want your post to be opened, it has to be seen. If the filters grab it, your recipient may not ever have the chance to see it.
In the above paragraph, I reworded two bits to avoid that trap. I said *not ever* because the one-word version that begins with *n* and ends with *ever* is one of the trigger words. So are the words you get if you drop the first letter off *where* or *know.* And I did the word that begins with *sp* and ends with *catcher* as one word, because the first four letters would ring a filter bell.
And you may have wondered why you sometimes see spaces in the middle of words in my newsletters--it*s to avoid triggering these robots* appetite for e-mail.
Learn to phrase things differently. Instead of the word that begins *fr* and continues *ee,* for instance, I might say *no-cost,* *without charge,* etc. For me, writing to beat the filters has become automatic (and given that I write about marketing and pro fit, it*s a challenge). I still run my stuff through a checker, and there will be a few items that I miss, but even my first draft scores are pretty low.
Most filters will rank a piece of mail, and those above a certain score will be blocked entirely or held for review before delivery. So, typically, you can have a few of the filter hooks but not too many.
In addition to word traps, some filters are set for format traps. Fortunately, those are easy to avoid--if you know what they are. This isn*t a complete list, but it*ll get you started:
* Html formats (see next month for a full explanation)
* Strings of all-capital letters (this is why I am violating grammar and not capitalizing every letter of Html)
* Multiple exclamation points and/or dollar signs
* Documents that are excessively long (yes, I*m guilty, I confess)
* Double-high priority flag
OK, so how do you know? Run it through at least one of these:
http://www.ezinecheck.com/check.html (this is the one I use most often, because it*s extremely easy to use and tells you the results right away--but it flags fewer words than some others)
Or http://spamcheck.sitesell.com/ (follow the instructions *exactly*--and you*ll get a report by e-mail within a few hours)
Or http://www.lyris.com/resources/contentchecker/ (another one that e-mails the report)
Next month, we*ll finish out the e-mail series by looking at the plusses and minuses of Html-mail versus plain text.
Oh, and if you want the reference for that 22 percent *nixie* figure in my lead go to: http://www.clickz.com/stats/sectors/email/article.php/3496361
