Subject: [Sharing with Writers] Sample Media Release, Critical Analysis Feature

March 5, 2006: Sharing with Writers:
From the Desks
Of Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Authors* Coalition Friends

~~~:.~~~.:~~~.:~~~:.~~~.:~~~.:~~~:.~~~.:~
Most recent issues of Sharing with Writers are posted with live links at Fairgo E-Books: http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/fairgoebooks/literary.htm. You will find the *Best of Sharing with Writers* at Apollos Lyre (www.ApollosLyre.com). Sharing with Writers is the official newsletter of Authors* Coalition (http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com) an organization of writers who help writers.
Note: In order to cut down on computerese, I do not use (or I substitute for) many punctuation marks. They seem to disagree with Yahoo and others. I hope it doesn*t drive you crazy.
Note from Carolyn:
Dear Authors* Coalition Members and Subscribers:
I am having a lot of fun preparing my next class for UCLA. It will be a one-day seminar so it is affordable in terms of both time and dollars. Also, we will be covering the essential tools for
*Preparing Your Manuscript for the Most Polished Presentation Possible.* I know you will learn techniques for buffing your manuscript to its most presentable luster. Here is course description.
Whether you choose to pursue traditional publishing or one of the alternative routes, you want a credible, professional package when you present yourself to agents or publishers. More and more presses expect their authors to be partners in the editing process and fewer of them provide the product-perfect support you expect for your book. This one-day seminar helps you with both. You learn step-by-step procedures that prevent usage, grammar, and style errors from creeping into your books as well as learn simple but sure-fire techniques for punching up and polishing your prose. The course also addresses the mundane-but-critical tasks of printing, packaging, and getting that newly-polished manuscript to its destination. You are invited to bring short writing samples; the instructor will select several in order to illustrate how these strategies and principle work.
Sign up at www.uclaextension.edu or call Marcus Hennessey at writers@uclaextension.edu or (310) 825-9415.
If you don*t live in LA think of what a lovely week you could spend in Los Angeles seeing the homes of the stars, Disneyland and learning more about your craft with part of that trip a business tax write-off.
Best,
Carolyn Howard-Johnson
Tip: Once in a while publishers come through--even the big traditional ones. Take June Casagrande*s publisher for *Grammar Snobs Are Great Big Meanies* (www.grammarsnobs.com). She asked them to produce bumper stickers for her because the title seems to fit the bumper sticker humor so well and they did! So the tip here is, it*s best not to submit a request with great expectations, but it is important to ask.
A Fr^ebie for YOU
An Oppportunity, Too!
Authors Coalition has begun a new page of free e-books that will help other writers. http://authorscoalition.redenginepress.com/free_ebooks.htm. You are invited to submit yours to be included. The only restrictions are that the e-book must be on a subject that will help other writers promote, write or improve their computer skills. Submissions are juried and there is no pay, just that pleasant feeling we get when we help other authors--all in the Authors* Coalition spirit. You*ll also want to read the first entry, *Your Writing, Your Soul: Fear Can Keep Your Writing Closeted So Uncloset Your Treasures and Promote!* It is sort of a re-worked excerpt from *The Frugal Book Promoter* and was edited and formatted by Milli Thornton, author of *Fear of Writing: For Writers and Closet Writers.* (www.fearofwriting.com)
If you would like to share an e-book (or nominate a friend*s) send it to Joyce Faulkner at katieseyes@aol.com.
Opportunity: Expose Your Book to Booksellers
The Authors* Coalition booth at the LA Times Festival of Books will be sending a catalog to booksellers. A cross-promotion effort with each participating author sharing names of bookstores, this catalog will be sent to bookstore buyers (we*re shooting for 500) and some local press. All those participating in the booth will be included but we have room for a few more participants in the catalog. Joyce Faulkner, a member of the AC Board of Directors and our faithful Webmaster and publisher-of-materials, sends this offer along to you:
*…if you want to have an ad in this catalog, here are the prices: A full page ad is $600, one half pages is $300, one quarter page is $150 and one eight of a page is $75. These all include cover art, ISBN, a short blurb and your Website address. If you want just a text notice with title, authors* name, ISBN and tend words, that add is $10. Businesses are welcome to purchase ads as well.*
So, if you have questions or want to participate, contact her at katieseyes@aol.com. Please put *Book Fair Catalog* in the subject line, but hurry.
Opportunity for Your Fave Review to Appear in Weblights:
Paid members of Authors* Coalition (that includes those who have paid to be featured in the AC booth at the LA Times/UCLA Festival of Books), are entitled to publish their favorite review for their book (s) on the AC site (http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com/Reviews.htm) .On the home page you will find a place to pay dues and then you send your review (after getting permission from the reviewer, of course) to Joyce at katieseyes@aol.com Many of you qualify but haven*t sent your reviews. Oh! Be sure to include a link to your site in the review and it would be very nice if you linked back to the AC site as well.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
When was the last time you bought a book from an author you know? *Tracings* my new chapbook of poetry, (www.finishinglinepress.com), is available for that honor at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599240173/qid=1141623936/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-4692447-2218401?s=books&v=glance&n=283155 but any book mentioned in any one of your *Sharing with Writers* newsletters would also be a nice gesture. If all of us directed more of our reading to newer authors who write in genres we love or genres we need to stretch into, we would do ourselves and the publishing industry a great favor.
Kathe*s Corner:
1. Optimize your website with inbound links (having links on other sites point to yours). One of the best ways to do this is to pack your website with useful content. Other webmasters will naturally link to you because your site will be valuable to them and their visitors.
2. A new trend for websites is to add testimonial. Site owners get the testimonials from their site visitors and business customers. In exchange for giving it, they will provide a link back to your site. Every time you come across a great website or enjoy a great product you purchased online, send a testimonial to the website owner. If they decide to publish your testimonial, you will get a link to your website.
Going to the Next Level:
Using Critical Analysis to Improve your Work
by Joyce Faulkner
When I went to college the first time, I took a course called *Critical Analysis*. A lot like playing with a Rubik*s Cube or working through a Mensa puzzle, it was absorbing and when you were done you felt superior to the other dolts who wasted their free time on bridge or football. At the time, I was too inexperienced to recognize what a marvelous tool it would be when I turned to writing fiction as a serious endeavor.
Using critical analysis as part of the overall creative process has helped me make important decisions about approach, characterization and plot. It*s allowed me to consciously control language, tone and perspective and taken me beyond seat of the pants bumbling. That*s not to say that seat of the pants bumbling isn*t fun. I often chuckle at the advice to *create a plot outline*. To be honest with you, I just cannot do it cold. I have to have my story all worked out in my head before I can do an outline of any kind.
Here*s my big secret. I sit down in front of my computer and write a story. Oh, sometimes the idea germinates for a long time -- maybe even years, but sooner or later, I open a Word file and *just do it*. Then I save it and go on to the next activity -- like eating bonbons or watching Judge Judy. Weeks or months or, in one case, years later, I dig out the piece and take a look at it with a critical eye, asking myself some important questions like:
1, Who is my audience? Who am I trying to touch? Am I trying to win them over? Make them think? Shake their certainty? Bolster their opinions?
2. What do I want the reader to feel when they finish the piece? (Thoughtful? Angry? Sad? Uplifted?)
3. Should this piece be a play or a short story or a novella or a novel?
4. What*s the theme of this story? What genre?
5. Who are these characters? Are they the right ones to carry the plot? What are their core values? Do they speak to my chosen audience?
6. Are there any subplots that would enhance the meaning of the story?
7. Should any of the elements of the story be researched? Expanded? Contracted?
8. How do I want to present the story? Chronologically with a beginning, middle, ending? In flashback? As memory? As action?
9. Do I want the piece to be a quick read? A leisurely one?
10. What point of view do I want to present?
Once I*ve answered each of these questions, I put the original version of the story away and write a new one incorporating the decisions I made from my critical evaluation of the first one.
For example, let*s say my story is about a child who runs away from home and has a series of misadventures before realizing that she misses her parents and that she*s not yet ready to be on her own. She runs into a variety of obstacles but when she does find her way back, she has learned to appreciate her family and her home.
If I want to aim the piece at parents, I might present it from the point of view of an anguished mother searching for her child throughout the Midwest. If I want to touch a child, I might tell the story from the perspective of a little dog who tries to protect its young mistress from the consequences of her own choices and the villains they meet on their journey.
If I*m writing a short story, I might opt for an action piece punctuated with brief flashbacks as the girl compares her current troubles with the safety of home and the love of her parents. If I*m writing a novel, I might create a sustained allegory reflecting on the role of women in today*s society and the frustrations she faces when trying to make her way through an unfriendly world filled with sniveling lions and hostile monkeys.
If I want to create something in the thriller/disaster genre, I*ll throw in a massive twister -- at least a 5 on the Fugita scale. If I want to appeal to the mystery buffs among us, I*ll add an old lady detective with a Poirot moustache and cockatoo on one shoulder who interviews the little girl*s last known associates.
If I want my audience to feel uplifted, I*ll have an angel lead the little girl home. If I want them to feel pious, I*ll have my heroine become a missionary who works with the community of little people she met during her travels. If I*m penning a screenplay, I might add witches and scarecrows and name the dog Toto. If I*m feeling perverse, I*ll have the scarecrow sing.
*Road Trip* Authors Take Their Own Advice and Hit the Road
OREGON - It*s the old adage – the cobbler*s kid needs shoes, the barber needs a haircut, and the road trip gurus need, well … a road trip. Too busy to *practice what they preach*, authors Phil and Carol White found themselves tired of the Oregon rain and ready for a change of scenery. But how do you take off when you need to pay attention to marketing your book? How about a book promotion road trip!
Mixing marketing Live Your Road Trip Dream (RLI Press, 2004), their award-winning ultimate road trip planning guide, with a road trip to promote the book is the perfect way for the authors to live their own road trip dream. Today*s technology allows business people like the Whites to mix play with work. They will pack their vehicle with their laptop, cell phone and of course books as they head for southern California and Arizona later this month. Customers can reach them by phone or email just as normal, and they will have some time to explore new places to write about.
They have scheduled several presentations along the way to share the joy of a long road trip with the 10,000 baby boomers reaching 60 every day and wanting to head out on the road themselves. Gen-xers contemplating a mid-career sabbatical or leave will also find the tips and ideas to be invaluable.
The Whites have spoken to over 1,000 people about their planning tools and their adventure in such diverse settings as athletic clubs, RV rallies, AAA, book stores and libraries – all with rave reviews. They have also been frequent guest on radio and TV with over 50 appearances to date, and this trip won*t slow that activity down. Carol says, *Most radio interviews are done by phone, and we really enjoy talking to people about how to make this incredible experience happen, so we*ll just be talking from a different location than normal.*
To see the White*s and hear about planning your own road trip, plan to be at one of the following appearances:
3/6 - 7:30pm - Distant Lands Bookstore - Pasadena, Ca
3/7 - 7:30pm - Le Travel Store - San Diego, Ca
3/10 - 6:00pm - Barnes & Noble - Orange, Ca
3/11 - 4:00pm - Camping World - 40th Anniversary - San Bernardino, Ca
3/15 - 6:00pm - Barnes & Noble - Palm Desert, Ca
3/29 - 2:00pm - Barnes & Noble - Surprise, Az
4/1 - 1:00pm - Mostly Books - Tucson, Az
For additional information on these locations, visit their website at
www.roadtripdream.com/appearances.html
Their lively 50-minute presentation is sure to inspire the wanderlust to plan that long trip that dreams are made of -- and make the listener believe that they too can do it. Phil adds, *We*ll never have another journey as awesome as our road trip dream – we*d love to help you accomplish your dreams too.*
