Subject: [Sharing with Writers] Shakespeare a Plagiaris, Spring Conferences and More

March 19, 2006: Sharing with Writers:
From the Desks
Of Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Authors* Coalition Friends

~~~:.~~~.:~~~.:~~~:.~~~.:~~~.:~~~:.~~~.:~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most recent issues of Sharing with Writers are posted with live links at Fairgo E-Books: http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/fairgoebooks/literary.htm. You will find the *Best of Sharing with Writers* at Apollos Lyre (www.ApollosLyre.com). Sharing with Writers is the official newsletter of Authors* Coalition (http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com) an organization of writers who help writers.
Note: In order to cut down on computerese, I do not use (or I substitute for) many punctuation marks. They seem to disagree with Yahoo and others. I hope it doesn*t drive you crazy.
~~~:.~~~.:~~~.:~~~:.~~~.:~~~.:~~~:.~~~.:~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Note from Carolyn:

Dear Authors* Coalition Members and Subscribers:

Because I will be spending the last part of March speaking at writers* conferences, I thought I should share with you how important conferences have been to my writing for they are almost certain to work as well for you. I included an entire section on how to make conferences more effective in *The Frugal Book Promoter* but it doesn*t talk about how my experience with conferences has progressed and that deserves a mention.

I went to my first writers* conferences because I wanted to write better. I attended UCLA*s Writers* Conference in something like 1998 and credit that intense writing experience with much of the success *This is the Place* enjoyed. A couple years later I attended San Diego State University*s Writers* Conference and--because that is their focus--learned tons about agents, publishers and the industry. Since then, I*ve done many more and last year I was invited back to SDSU*s conference as a speaker. They offer (for an additional fee) consultations with professionals including agents so, when I wasn*t speaking, I took advantage of that. I enlisted the help of David McCullough for only their small ($20? ) fee and he very nearly became my chapbook of poetry*s final editor. Now you can*t beat that.

So you can see the trail has come full circle--from attendee to speaker. This month I*ll be doing seminars at Dayton University*s Erma Bombeck Workshop and the Las Vegas Writers* Conference. As much as I enjoy helping other writers by leading workshops or speaking, I must admit that I haven*t given up on attending as many of the other presentations I can.

So find a conference that*s right for you by querying your fellow writers. Dig out your copy of *Frugal.* Read the chapter on how to make a conference work for you in dozens of ways--from finding an agent to promotion. And GO!

Best,
Carolyn Howard-Johnson

No part of this newsletter is paid advertising. At the suggestion of a subscriber who reads every issue of Sharing with Writers, you will find brand new material so noted with a pointing finger.
=======================================================

Tip: This is NOT a paid ad. It just occurred that my little writer*s eyes have been squinting a lot. I found this ad in Time Magazine for a Balanced Spectrum floor lamp. It is only $49.95 and it *spreads sunshine all over the place.* I think I may be worth it. If I am, you are. Here*s the number for ordering: 800 811 8151.

Quote:

Most of us recognize the name James Patterson. In an article on him in Time Magazine (March 20th issue) he manages to give authors all kinds of his trade secrets including how he partners with other authors less famous (but just as talented) as himself to increase his output! Author of the article, Lev Grossman, says *…he took control* of his own novel from the cover design to the marketing. That he had big--huge--ties to J. Walter Thompson Agency and all that entails, didn*t hurt but the rest of us can take heed. What was one of the things he did? He blew up the title *Along Came a Spider* in huge letters *that practically shouted across the bookstore that this book was going to give …readers exactly what they were looking for.* That*s one of the hints I give in *The Frugal Book Promoter,* too. Huge title. Huge author*s name.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
When was the last time you bought a book from an author you know? *Tracings* my new chapbook of poetry, (www.finishinglinepress.com), is available for that honor at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599240173/qid=1141623936/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-4692447-2218401?s=books&v=glance&n=283155 but any book mentioned in any one of your *Sharing with Writers* newsletters would also be a nice gesture. If all of us directed more of our reading to newer authors who write in genres we love or genres we need to stretch into, we would do ourselves and the publishing industry a great favor.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Keeping Up to Date:

Recently, Nov. 2005, Time Magazine ran and article titled *$$$ in the Attic* by Sally Stich. Those of us who write diaries and keep records and scraps of paper, it warns, may be stashing away a treasure trove. So, though your journal or diary may be a treasure for you as a writer (scraps of poetry, ideas for future novels!), it may also be worth dollars on its own somewhere down the road--even if you don*t get famous. Four civil wars diaries written by unknowns recently brought $3,500.

If you are using and old family *anything* for your writing, you may want to contact an estate liquidator rather than tossing it (or your own material) when you*re done. Ditto for old report cards, concert tickets, etc. There*s always e-Bay, too! Nix the shredder until you*ve checked. (The article was in the Time Bonus Section, page F8.)

A New Word:

Here's a new word spawned in Academia only a few years ago: *Microinequities* is a buzzword now heard in the business world for the small things that employers do--often unwittingly--that make their employees unhappy. I*m supposing writers can benefit from examining these *indirect offenses* that may demoralize our contacts, especially when we do so much work by e-mail where our body language can*t be read.

Ways to Make Your Website More Effective

1. Consider a text only alternative on your site for people with older computers.
2. Submit your website to online directories. This is a fantastic way to create a one-way inbound link. (A link pointing to your site without a reciprocating link). There are many free directories. Find out more about submitting at Directory-Pages.com.
3. Offer something f r** on your Website, such as an e-book, in exchange for a link to help build more of those inbound links
4. Write articles and post them on your website to entice other Webmasters to link to yours. There is a constant search online for good linking content. Build it and they will come!

News:

Shakespeare a Plagiarist?

On March 14 an editorial in the LA Times questioned whether the suit that the authors behind *Holy Blood, Holy Grail* were bringing against Dan Brown, author of *The Da Vinci Code* was going too far. The two are asking the London courts to protect their ideas rather than the usual copyright issues of lifting *passages of their work verbatim, or that Brown*s work as a whole was substantially similar to theirs.*

The Times makes the point that if such a suit were to succeed authors would not be able to use historic or scientific research as a basis for their works. That would certainly put sci-fi writers in a stew, wouldn*t it!

They also point out that such a ruling would make Shakespeare a plagiarist for he borrowed plots for *most of his plays from popular histories or even other fictions writers.*

Author Promo Idea:

Chris Meeks offers up his approach to using Google*s free video function. It*s at: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-979132923480273141 The video is ten minutes long. He says, *When my friend with a book saw an interview on the Internet, he said, *Hey, we can do that ourselves,* so we did. Video files are large and require a fast server and fast broadband line. Google Video started offering free space to people, so my friend uploaded our video (that another friend edited) and there we are.

Earlier today, I saw this for my book:

Amazon.com Sales Rank: #84,931 in Books (See Top Sellers in Books)
Yesterday: #765,386 in Books

My book jumped up in rank by over 680,000 places overnight. That probably means two or three books were sold, but what the heck. Perhaps the video works.

Instant Messaging for Dummies
© 2006 Christine Louise Hohlbaum

(Editor*s Note: Many of you received an invitation from me for Yahoo*s IM system. I got started on this because the author of this article sent me one. Then I got to thinking about promotion opportunities within the system--especially the microphone feature-- and thought I*d check it out for my next book on promotion. That prompted this article. Ahhhhh, networking! Ain*t it wonderful?)

Modern technology has created possibilities considered unimaginable in the past century. As writers, we can live anywhere in the world and still stay connected with our editors, families, and acquaintances. Through mobile technology, we can have a conference call on a Thai beach, provided the bar has wireless Internet access.

How important is it to be in contact with your network, you ask? In today*s world of instant connection, it is imperative.

Much like Skype.com, Yahoo! Messenger with Voice 7.0 allows you to phone with someone via an Internet connection. What you need are a set of speakers and a microphone. For privacy purposes, some people opt for a headset which contains both.

I recently sent invitations to my entire list of contacts. The upside is I now I have forty-plus new names of people I can chat with whenever the need arises. The downside is interruption is almost guaranteed whenever I*m online.

The good part is you can change your status at any time: from *stepped out* to *on the phone* to *busy*, you can indicate the degree of your availability. Another advantage is to sidestep potential spam filters which no longer guarantee your e-mail*s delivery. Send your contact an attachment via the instant messaging function, provided he or she is on your list of allowed contacts. Both parties must agree to be connected to the other, thereby significantly reducing any accusations of spamming the other. You cannot instant message someone without his or her prior permission.

Admittedly, after trying out Yahoo!*s voice messaging system, I discovered the sound quality is less than desirable. For what it is worth, I offer you two suggestions.

This link allows you to download the f r*e beta version of Yahoo! Messaging with Voice 7.0.
http://beta.messenger.yahoo.com/download.php

Follow the instructions. If you have dial-up, you could be in for an hour wait as it downloads to your system.

The second suggestion is Skype.com, whose sound quality is far superior to Yahoo!*s.
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/windows/downloading.html Oddly, I get an echo effect from my friend in Amsterdam while it is clear as a bell when I chat with my friend in Nevada. Living near Munich, I am much closer to Amsterdam than the Nevada desert so it has little to do with distance.

At this juncture, it is worthy to mention instant messaging (IM) etiquette.

• If you *knock* on someone*s door, make sure the person has time. Just as with a phone call, ask the person if now is a good time to *talk*.
• Do not drop the conversation without telling the other person you are leaving your desk or busy with someone else. If you do lose your wireless connection or there is a blackout in your home, be sure to tell the person via e-mail, a phone call or another IM what happened.
• At the bottom of the window, there is a message which indicates if the other person is typing a message back to you. Give the person time to respond before changing the subject. If you type a mile a minute, allow for the other to catch up to you!
• Do not harass a person by IM*ing them constantly. As writers, our laptops and desktops are our desks. You wouldn*t bother your colleague every day with miscellaneous information. Would you?
• Set up an appointment to IM. It*s the best way to assure your communication is both desired and warranted.

We live in a technological world with infinite possibilities. Using this new-found power wisely can strengthen our relationships and connect our global village in immense and powerful ways.

Selling Books (POD and Otherwise) to B&N

Second in a Series
By Janet Elaine Smith

When you call a B&N store, be enthusiastic about your book. It is contagious. Tell them about your book like you really like it. It doesn*t matter if it is a fiction or non-fiction book.
Start locally and regionally. They are more apt to be interested if there is some sort of a local tie-in. Once you have good sales in your own area (and by *area* I mean your own state and the surrounding states that border on yours), then it is time to widen your horizons and let them know that *it is selling very well in ...........*
Now, for the secret. Don*t be greedy. Don*t tell them that they can get a bigger discount by ordering your book in case lots. Every B&N store I have ever talked to does all of their ordering through Ingram. Make sure you have that connection before you decide on a publisher, whether you are self-published through a POD provider or a small traditional publisher. Ingram will give them the same discount as set up by the publisher, no matter how big or how small it is and no matter how many or how few copies they order.
When you call a manager, ask them if they would consider putting *a couple of copies on your shelves.* This is where the secret comes into play. This has been verified to me by quite a few managers, so I assume it is correct. When they order two copies of a book, it goes into their computer system and the computer will automatically reorder the book once those two copies are sold. When the computer reorders, it asks for four copies. When those four copies sell, the computer reorders eight copies. When the eight copies are sold, the computer will reorder sixteen copies, and it will stay at that sixteen level as long as they are selling. It*s the old snowball effect. Once it goes into the computer reorder system, the manager may not even remember that your book is there, except for the times it goes through the cash register.
As I always say at the end of my marketing column in The Writer*s Journal (I hope you have been following it!), *Happy Sales to You...* (Sounds just like Roy and Dale, don*t you think?)
