July 14, 2006: Sharing with Writers:
From the Desks
Of Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Authors' Coalition Friends

Note from Carolyn:

Dear Authors' Coalition Members and Subscribers:

Domain names have been on my mind. I am going to begin working on a special site (well, not me, a treasured friend--but more about that later) for The Frugal Promoter Series now that "The Frugal Book Promoter: How to do What Your Publisher Won't" will soon be the first in that series rather than a stand-alone title.

Many of you know that I lost my domain name because of my low TIQ (that would be Tech I.Q.). Of course, a third party got it and, though they have no use for it, want to sell it back to me for a premium. I had been mulling over the possibilities -- very limited due to my limited expertise -- when one of the attendees at a seminar I was teaching (Illustrator Karen Winter, gwprod@pacbell.net ), took me in hand, gave me a boot in the pants (hard to do) and got me started. Even though I will be juggling my websites in the next few months, this domain name will travel wherever it goes. Isn't that just a revelation?

Anyway, the new name isn't too different from what I had before. In fact it even includes that infamous dash in my last time. Here it is:
http://carolynhoward-johnson.com.

Now, if you don't have a site or a really good domain name, go out a get one. If I can do it, anyone can. I used godaddy.com. They're cheap and even I eventually learned to navigate the site well enough to get the job done!

Best,
Carolyn Howard-Johnson

Learning from Spirited Women

Nancy Mills sends this invitation along:
"Our next guest is one of the few female detectives in the book biz and she started writing post 40 - so there is hope for one and all:

Reviewer Wanted:

My editor at MyShelf.com is looking for another reviewer. As many of you know, I recommend reviewing as a way to trade your writing for exposure. Some reviewers get paid but I don't view it as an income booster -- more as a promotion booster. You know, byline, tagline, book cover picture and maybe other perks. If you're interested, send an e-mail to: br_we@sbcglobal.net Tell her where you found out about her (always a good way to get special notice paid to your queries). For those interested in what MyShelf does for my exposure, visit my column at http://www.myshelf.com/backtoliterature/column.htm Yes, I also review. I read anyway, why not also write a review? Having said that, my review schedule is so impacted, I'm not taking on any more books, but at MyShelf you can register to see if any of their other reviewers are interested.

New members will help Authors' Coalition serve all its members better! Ask your writing friends to join at http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com. Paid members get a favorite review posted, their photos and titles listed among members, consideration for an interview or review in Yarnspinners and Wordweavers and with more in the works. Membership is reasonable, too. We're even planning a speakers' bureau.

Tell friends to visit our blog, too. There they'll learn how to spark generally insipid book fairs by using value-added promotions: http://redenginepress.com/chjohnson .

Authors' Success and Pre-Promotion Ideas:

Bev Walton Porter (scribequill@adelphia.net) calls "Sun Signs for Writers," her first "solo book." Writer's Digest Books releases it on August 23, 2006.

Visit her site: http://www.writersigns.info If you buy "Sun Signs for Writers" between now and September 15th, she'll run a F r e * astrological natal chart and graphic of your birth date/place/time for you.

Order directly from her to get a hand-numbered, autographed copy at this URL: http://tinyurl.com/fz6yz or e-mail her a copy of your receipt from Amazon or Barnes & Noble online (the book is already listed for pre-order).

For every person you refer who orders her book, Bev will give you free advertising in an issue of Scribe & Quill (worth $35 and up). She'll also gift the person who refers her with their own personal astrological chart. You'll have to let her know who referred you (in this case, me!!) Sure, I want that free ad!

Opp for Humor Writers

The LA Times business page reports that MySpace.com, perhaps seeing the downside of the sordid reputation they are getting, is "trying to create a friendly space -- for advertisers."

They're doing it by making a special place for humor. I'm thinking, is there any way Authors' Coalition members and "Sharing with Writers" subscribers could take advantage of this -- for publishing humor, or for advertising humorous books?

==================================================
When was the last time you bought a book from an author you know? "Tracings" my new chapbook of poetry,

is available for that honor at

but any book mentioned in any one of your "Sharing with Writers" newsletters would be a nice gesture. If all of us directed more of our reading to newer authors who write in genres we love or genres we need to stretch into, we would do ourselves and the publishing industry a great favor.

In the News:

Random House, HarperCollins and Others Want Their Movie Cut

The LA Times (Monday, July 17) reports that publishers have been envious of movie profits based on their literary properties for years are now doing something about it; they're partnering with movie studios to share with the expenses and profit of movies that are based on their books.

Authors, like Dean Koontz, are also eyeing the movie market in a different way by selling their stories to studios first.

Authors have always wanted a movie deal. So what's new? It appears that the powers that be are now more receptive to the idea. There are even agents who specialize in this kind of deal like Los Angeles based Amy Schiffman.

Director of New York University's media and technology department, Samuel Craig says, "…now, more than ever, content is king when it comes to movies and TV, and nobody has more content than the book world."

How might you make this trend work for you?

Figures to Get You Moving:

This is the stuff that reminds us authors we must use every ounce of our writing selves and promotional beings to compete today. It's tough but it can be done and often is. Here are the figures:

1991: 45,000 books published
2003 175,000 books published

PMA (Publishers Marketing Assoc) says there are now 86,641 legitimate publishers (legitimate being defined as those that have published ten or more books).

The opportunities are there but your work is cut out for you!

As one of the lead instructors on the craft of writing for the audios published by Double Dragon Publishing we produce together (more information under "Carolyn's Appearances and Teaching"), I knew I could con her into doing more on the subject for you. Here's the first in a series.)
Part I Omniscient POV

There are many techniques open to the writer today for creating works of fiction -- techniques that allow readers to get lost inside the pages and engrossed in the story. Through manipulation of dialogue, sensory impressions and point of view, the authors' presence melts away and readers are transported to other worlds.

In a well-crafted story, the author does not exist. There are only the characters and their drama! If, for some reason, the author suddenly lands on the page, he or she will probably arrive with a loud thunk, jerking the reader from his or her reverie and reminding them that this is, after all, "only a story." The magic bubble evaporates!

It's too bad when that happens. Authorial intrusion is like hearing a baby wail in a movie theater during a particularly good scene: you become more aware of the real world than the story in front of you.

So what does authorial intrusion sound like, and how can we use point of view to avoid it? I'll start by presenting the following passage, constructed deliberately to show authorial intrusion. See if you can feel the author's presence in this:

“The vibrations were still rattling the windows a full 20 seconds after the first boom. Panic-stricken, the dancers streaked toward the far end of the ballroom, where they fixed their eyes warily on the large, wildly swaying chandelier in the center of the room. A server, feeling confused, slipped and dropped her tray, but no one rushed to help her. The glass from the emptied wine bottle shattered onto the marble floor even as the last couple dashed around the fragments in a race to the wall, their hearts thudding inside their chests. The girl left her upturned tray on the floor and stumbled toward the crowd, her fear mounting as another tremor rolled beneath her feet. By the time she reached the group, the men had formed a tight protective circle around their wives, glancing deliberately past the server as she skidded to a halt before them. Unable to break inside, the girl followed the line of tuxedos to the wall, where she stood slightly separated from the group, and waited.”

So who's head are we in?

Does it sound like Anybody's and Everybody's! The POV is all over the map!

First, we're running with the panic-stricken dancers, then we're feeling confused with the server, just before we dash around the glass fragments with the chest-thudding couple. Finally, we follow the fearful server to the line of tuxedo clad gents, who are deliberately ignoring her. Who is showing us all this information?

The author's, of course.

With the All-Knowing Author parading his or her knowledge across the page, the reader is less aware of individuals or groups of individuals in the passage than they are of the storyteller. This is called the omniscient point of view, and while this point of view was widely used by authors in the 19th century, it is considered an unattractive choice by most authors today because it lacks emotional content. It's hard to connect with the characters when the author is doing the talking. It's like listening to friends talk about other friends. It may be interesting, but it's not likely to bring out a sense of intimacy in the listener for those being discussed, at least not nearly as much as when you hear the information first hand. When people are telling you face-to-face what has happened to them, it's far more powerful.

You may be thinking that it is so convenient to use the omniscient point of view. You don't have to worry about how to how to get information to the reader when you can freely use any character’s head to speak their mind.

But a story about everybody is a story about nobody. With omniscient point of view, no one inside the drama is watching; there’s no one with a first-hand opinion - only an outside observer relating the entire scene. Like God, the observer sees everybody! Readers, however, want to connect and FEEL something. They want to get to know the characters. While the advantages of using the omniscient point of view are tempting, such as the convenience that you mentioned, the disadvantages are often greater, and if you want to create an emotionally charged work, it's a good idea to stay away from it.

So, what other points of view can work to create greater intimacy in a way that the reader is not aware of the author?
Wait for the next issue of "Sharing with Writers."
