Tip:
Every would-be writer should join a writers' group of some kind. You are no longer alone. You have people who understand your ambitions and desires. Often someone in the group will have an answer to your questions. At the very least, the volume of experiences to learn from is greater than just your own. Join a writing group or start one if none exists. If you live in downstate Illinois, we'd love to have you at Southern Illinois Writers Guild at John A. Logan College on the third Thursday night of the month.

Writing Tip: Recently I was guest instructor for Eve Caram's beginning fiction class a UCLA and they talked a bit about a how to and whether to translate foreign words or phrases in your work. Eve reiterated my stance that for literary works, we should not translate but better than that (Ha!) she suggested Cormack McCarthy's Blood Meridian for you to read. It is an example of a book with long passages of Spanish and no translation. She also suggested his work (including All the Pretty Horses) as an example of how to use of extreme violence; it was the consensus that it works because of McCarthy's beautiful prose.

News Tip:
Poets and poetry readers please note: A Green Tortoise Bus has been dispatched from Seattle-based Wave Books (great publicity for them and for the participating poets)! As it travels throughout the USA, it will pick up poets who will schmooze with visitors in cities and countryside including a ranch in Missoula, a sushi bar in Spokane, Rhode Island (presumably one stop only--and yes, that's a joke!) and the Museum of Natural history. See http://www.poetrybus.com/ for the schedule.

Tip: When I get into writing mode I sit very still for a few minutes and meditate. I take a few deep breaths before I begin writing. I get out my pad and pen and write longhand whatever it is I am thinking about. Sometimes short stories come out of this and I have something to put on the computer to send off to e-zines.

Tip: Writers' Journal is a real paper-and-ink magazine that aims its content to beginning writers. My first column for them will debut in their next issue but past issues have excellent articles that you might use, too. This month's issue (that would be Sept/Oct Vol 27 #5), for example, has an article on effective use of adverbs by Roy Peter Clark. It is an excerpt from his book, Writing Tools: 50 Essential Tools for EveryWriter (Little, Brown and Company).

Tip: This is from my last class on editing for a pristine presentation (whether manuscript or query letter):

The idea that a split infinitive is something to avoid at all costs is an urban legend. It came from the idea that a verb like to be functions as a single unit and should not be divided. That's poppycock. To be (and other infinitives) are two words and many times splitting them with an adverb is exactly the right thing to do. How do you know when it's right and when it's wrong? Do a test. If the language is more natural or clearer when you place the adverb between the to and whatever verb comes after it, go for it. Our language is supposed to clarify, not obey slavish (and inaccurate!) rules to appease the false grammar gods.

Now, here's the tip: When you're writing a query letter or other document where you may be judged by someone who still believes in the evil of split infinitives, better off to avoid them lest they toss your submission into the trash.

Promotion Tip: Nowhere can you achieve so much publicity for so little effort as in your press release –- if you do it right. Do a little research before whipping one up.

Do a little keyword research based on the concept of your press release. Why? Because you need to optimize your press release so that it will rank high in the natural search engine results once it gets picked up by Google, MSN or Yahoo. Target keywords that have a decent number of monthly searches but has little to moderate competition from highly optimized web sites. You can determine this by searching Google to see how many websites are competing for the same term. You also want to see if the keyword is being used in the title and if the website(s) have the term in their top level domain name.

When you utilize this information for your own keywords, you stand a greater chance of ranking in the top ten search engine results once your press release gets indexed.

Tip: Is your book on Amazon.co.uk? That's the United Kingdom version and they do have English speakers there. Ahem. So if your book is listed there and isn't reviewed, aren't you missing a bet? See what you can do and see my first review for that Amazon written by Frances Lynn at
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/193299310X/ref=pd_rvi_gw_2/202-6400337-6423028?ie=UTF8 There is one there for This Is the Place, too, but I need to go after them for my others books. And, no, you don't have to be a Brit to write one. Your US Amazon password will work just fine. Oh! And vote for Frances' review while you're there (just say the review was helpful). It's all about spreading good karma, writers sharing with writers, you know.

Tip: "Have you tried www.bookconnector.com/ to get reviews? It's easy to use. Just type in a bit of information about your book (s) and a whole list of possible reviewers will crop up. Always query reviewers before you send your book." This tip came from Diane J. Newton who is on the Book Connector board.

Tip: I wouldn't have thought of this as a tip excepting for this note from reviewer-site maven, Sassy Brit: "… I uploaded your book excerpt to the blog site - I thought it very good, and plan to try out your method for getting work out there as I too, have been guilty of writing stuff and not looking at it (sometimes for years!). Go and get a nudge on how to keep your old work active. Here is the link http://tjbook-list.blogspot.com/2006/08/323-alternative-book-excerpt-your.html ___________________________________

Quick E-mail Tip: I don't know how this will work for your e-mail provider but if I want to be sure that my AOL e-mail doesn't go through with those little twisters and other gobbeldy-gook, I right click on the e-mail window, scroll down to the last choice "compose as plain text," check it, and send it off. I just learned this so I thought it might be a tip you might be able to use; this method is lots faster than copying to Notebook and then re-copying and pasting it back to an e-mail window. Yeesht! It might work for Earthlink, Yahoo and others, too.

Tips from an Agent:
"I look for tight, to the point cover letters. If I can't get through the cover letter, then I won't look at the actual proposal. I want to know as soon as possible what your point of differentiation is, why YOU should be the one to write this book, and for you to show me, don't just tell me what you are writing about! If you start telling me how perfect you are for Oprah and the Today Show, you've lost me....you and everyone else! I look for authors who understand what a partnership is and how to work with and for their publisher. I expect typewritten, not handwritten queries (I kid you not!), spell checked, literate and grammatically correct. I want to know and see that you've done your homework in terms of the competition in your field. I look first and foremost for passion and knowledge of your subject matter, as well as YOUR voice."

Tip: Networking: The best Shoestring Promotion. "Carolyn, your last message put a bee in my bonnet. I've e-mailed my
friends in different cities all over the U.S. and I'll have to contact some via snail mail and asked them if they would look in their phone books for the names of vets and groomers and address cards to them I will send them stamped post cards with all the pertinent information for by book on them. All of them responded
that they would love to help and even offered to contact their friends in other cities to enlist their help. I'm counting on vets offices and dog groomers being so interested in a mystery with a
dog as one of the main characters that they will put the card on their bulletin board or order the book for themselves or to sell in the store. themselves.

Tip:
Use more than one domain name? You simply use more than one domain name pointing to a specific site These can be promoted a variety of ways.

Example. The Frugal Book Promoter is about to become a series called How to Do It Frugally because a new Frugal book on editing will soon be out. I want the series name as a URL, but I also want the book titles and maybe even some generic searches (like book editing) to take readers (those doing a search) to that site. I may only promote the series name or the title name. As a fiction writer, I can use this idea, too. I could use my name for one domain name (which I have) but could also do one for anyone who searches on This is the Place. That could happen because the phrase is famous in Western history.

This might be one of those occasions when it doesn't pay to be too frugal; even I may pop for a couple additional domain names! For inexpensive domain names look at:

Tip: From Diane J. Newton, author of Paradigm: "Wayne Wirs developed http://www.linktiles.com/ It's all about images. You'll see once you get there. It's a free place to post book covers, with blurbs and links. He sends out a daily linktile quote with featured tiles, does a weekly Concentration type puzzle using them and also features Missing Child photos, the thing I admire most. Just go there, join up and upload your stuff - limit 2 books. "

===============================When was the last time you bought a book from an author you know? "Tracings" my new chapbook of poetry,
www.finishinglinepress.com,
is available for that honor at
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599240173/qid=1141623936/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-4692447-2218401?s=books&v=glance&n=283155
but any book mentioned in any one of your "Sharing with Writers" newsletters would be a nice gesture. If all of us directed more of our reading to newer authors who write in genres we love or genres we need to stretch into, we would do ourselves and the publishing industry a great favor.

Long Promo Tip: Here is an idea from Glenda Ivey of Jada Publishing: If you can afford it, the idea in the release pasted below may help sell books or propel your book to the top of Amazon's ratings. You may decide to model yours promo/contest differently:
Prestigious Retired Judge Offers $5,000.00 Reward.

Judge Peter S. Smith (Ret.) recently completed The Magistrates: Murder AtThe Rose Bowl, the eagerly awaited sequel to his award-
winning novel, The Magistrates.

To promote both books, Judge Smith is sponsoring a contest. Correctly answer 10 simple questions based on the contents of both
novels, and win five thousand dollars.

L.A. County District Attorney, Steve Colley, said, "Murder At The Rose Bowl would make an extraordinary movie."

Tip: If you want your book reviewed on Amazon.com, B&N.com, etc, list it in Publishing Poynters Marketplace (no charge). You must be willing to send a book and promotional materials (review-book package) to readers of Publishing Poynters Marketplace who contact you. Make sure the book is already listed at Amazon.com. Poynter says, "Send your request and description to DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com. Draft your request so that I do not have to edit it. Make it SHORT (100 words max), no italics or bold type. Just describe the book in a few words; don’t send a lengthy review of it. Lengthy submissions will be returned for rewriting or ruthlessly cut. Reviewers only need enough information to see if they have expertise and an interest in your category. Supply full contact information including your email address. Write the draft as it should appear so that I do not have to do more than Copy\Paste. Put “Review Wanted” in the subject line.

Tip: "You might pen the greatest story ever told, but if it contains remedial text or formatting errors it will never see the light of day. I've seen examples of this type of oversight from writers and publishers I've come to know. I'm talking about simple, detectable errors, like misspelled words and extra spaces between quotation marks and letters. It's no wonder libraries or bookstores will never touch these books. Make your work shine by hiring a professional copy editor. If you don't, you're killing any chance you might have of seeing your creation shock the world."

Tip: Viral marketing is dependent on your creating something so compelling that others either voluntarily pass your work, idea, or whatever on to someone else. Or, at a minimum, they will happily do so when you request it. More and more, in the busy world, you will have to ask. Tip sheets often become viral (repellant as that may sound!) because someone perceives that they are useful and needed. So does humor. So does the willingness to aid others in achieving their goals.
