Subject: [Sharing with Writers] Internet Scams, Blog Tips You May Never Have Seen and Placing Ad

September 30, 2006: Sharing with Writers:

Note from Carolyn:

Dear Authors' Coalition Members and Subscribers:

Something new here, for me, anyway. Let's call it ph*sh*ng by post.

In my regular mailbox (you know, the old fashioned kind located outside one's front door?) I received a "bill" from Listing Corp.com. It was for the exact amount I had just paid GoDaddy by credit card for my new domain name. It purported to be pretty much for the exact services I had just signed on for, too. No real address was listed, no phone number to call to see what was going on. Luckily I procrastinated. When I was a little wider awake I found a disclaimer, "This is not a bill. This is a solicitation." On the backside of the "bill." On the bottom of that page. In typeface about the size you'd expect for a disclaimer.

So this note to you is not a pleasant little tip. It is a warning to read the fine print--front and back--on all "bills" you receive. A warning not to pay a "bill" just because it looks like it is for something you already purchased. And to run like h--- when you get something all nice and official-like when it gives you only website contact information.

Now, if that saves you $100 or so in the next year, isn't it worth the $0 cost of this newsletter? (-:

Best,

Carolyn Howard-Johnson

Feature #1:
Blogging Your Way to Book Profits: Five Tips for a Successful Book Promotion Blog

by Patrice-Anne Rutledge

You created a blog to promote your book and you're pretty happy with the
way it looks and the intriguing content it offers potential readers. But
so far the stampede of visitors--and buyers--hasn't arrived and you're not
quite sure what, if any, effect your blog is having on your overall book
promotion campaign. If this sounds familiar, you have plenty of company.
The good news is that by doing a few simple things, you can greatly
increase your traffic--and your potential sales.

Here's what to do:

1. Position Your Book Information in a Strategic Location

It sounds obvious, but many authors create a quality blog and then bury
the information about their book in a location that blog visitors can't
find easily. Your blog shouldn't be a blatant advertisement, but your
visitors should be able to find information about your book the minute
they reach your blog. Positioning a graphic image of your book's cover
plus a strategic link or two near the top of your blog's sidebar should be
enough to remind people that you're the author of a book related to the
blog's topic.

2. Use Keywords Wisely

Every website, including your blog, should have a list of associated
keywords, or keyword phrases, that describe the main topic of the site.
For example, if your book is about spelunking, your target keywords could
be "spelunking," "caves," and "cave exploration." Although your blog
content should never be contrived to suit keywords, you should keep your
blog keywords in mind every time you write a post. Including relevant
keywords in your blog headings, content, and linked text helps with search
engine rankings. Be careful not to overdo the use of keywords, however, or
you could be labeled a keyword spammer. Several strategic mentions of your
keywords should be enough.

3. Offer an Email Subscription to Your Blog

Offering email delivery of your blog postings can help you drive
additional traffic. Some readers may view your blog directly. Others may
subscribe to your RSS feed. Offering email updates provides a third way to
keep in touch with your audience, one that may already be very familiar to
readers who don't use RSS yet or are put off by complex-sounding
technology.

Some services to check out include FeedBlitz (http://www.feedblitz.com),
Zookoda (http://www.zookoda.com), and Squeet (http://www.squeet.com).
FeedBurner (http://www.feedburner.com) offers its own email subscription
service as well as provides built-in support for FeedBlitz and Squeet.

4. Comment on Other Blogs

Find other blogs that your target audience might read and comment on
interesting blog posts. Entering a blog comment is easy. Most blogs have a
link next to each post that you can click to open a comment page or dialog
box. Adding insightful commentary or other useful information is far more
helpful than just indicating that you like--or dislike--a specific post. By
listing your name and the URL of your blog, people will come and check you
out if they feel your comment adds value.

5. Ping for Attention

When you update your blog, use a ping utility to notify multiple blog
update services that you have new blog content. Using a utility to notify
multiple services, such as Technorati, My Yahoo!, Moreover, and Feedster,
with a single entry is a big timesaver. Pinging helps to index your blog
faster, which leads to greater search engine visibility. Some free ping
utilities to consider include: King Ping (http://www.kping.com),
Pingoat (http://www.pingoat.com), and Ping-O-Matic
(http://www.pingomatic.com).
If you use FeedBurner, you can also set up automatic blog pinging.

By trying one or more of these blog promotion techniques, you should start
seeing an increase in your blog traffic. And by ensuring that all these new
blog visitors learn all about your book, an increase in book revenue should
follow.

Feature #2:

Advertising that Works
Location! Location! Location!
By Carolyn Howard-Johnson

You know Frank Sinatra's song? Loosely quoted from memory it goes: "I've been a puppet, a poet, a pawn and a king?" Sometimes I feel like that. I've been everything. When it comes to promotion, it works for in my favor and it can work in your favor, too. This article is about how to position ads in newspapers and I could go on an on about the reasons for everything I tell you here but this is only a newsletter and I don't have the space. Thus, because I have worked as journalist (one side of the fence) a publicist (another side of the fence) and because I have been in a business that buys lots of advertising (retailing), and because I've appeared in ads and watched how the big guys do it, I'm hoping you'll just trust me. These are the secrets. This is how it is for newspaper advertising.

The number one reason people don't respond to a newspaper ads, other than that the ads are targeted to the wrong audience, is they don't see them. Count the pages in your newspaper. How many readers do you think even look at every page? Not many. This is how you can overcome that.

1. Buy space on the front or back of a section. You do that so that is seen by anyone, no matter how they rummage through the sections--even if they're only looking for the comics. To better afford this, bargain with newspapers to use up the first full page section that comes up because an ad is canceled for whatever reason.

2. It's common knowledge we should try to get space
on the right page, as far forward in the paper and/or the section as possible, that we should try to match the product/book we're selling to the section we're advertising in, and that it should appear on the upper half of the page, rather than the lower where most of the other ads are

These are generalities. There are individual cases when the rules might be broken effectively. But the best place is the one I mentioned in number one. Go back and read it.

3. Full page ads work best. Ask yourself, how many of those little ads you read. If you can't do a full pager, go for 1/2 page ads that follow the rules above.

To make any ad, regardless of the size, work well, though, you make them look like a news story or editorial, not an ad. Here's how you do that:

1. You write a story or a pitch. You're a writer. You can do it. Pretend like you're the staff writer writing the story. Rave but not too much and then give the reader the information needed to follow up, something a staff-writer for that newspaper might neglect to do. That includes a website, phone number and address.

2. Don't use frou-frou. That includes reverse copy (white copy on a black background), line art, graphics, arrows, cute fonts. Make it look like a report on the front page of that same newspaper. Even newspapers know that when they print what they call advertorials, readership skyrockets by hundreds of percents. That's why they often sell you an ad and give you free advertorials--to get you hooked.

3. Sprinkle in subheads, perhaps in boldface. Use them in place of the bullets or arrows you're tempted to use.

4. If you use art, use a photograph similar to one a newspaper would run to illustrate a story. How about a picture of you doing something that illustrates your book? Don't use just a book cover or just a thumbnail of your face. Who cares? Only people who know you. Get some human interest going. Use a dog. Get some action happening.

5. Write a headline with bite. They call them sound bites on TV but they're really your first-line ad.

6. Frequency counts. No matter what kind of ad you decide on--even if you have to ignore much of what you find here--run ads often. People who were interested last time will act more readily on their second exposure and even more readily on their seventh. That's why Time-Life has run the ad I appeared in for their CD series thousands of times throughout the US and kept it up for more than a year.

========================================================If you enjoy "Sharing with Writers" please nominate it for Writer's Digest's 101 Best Newsletters for Writers. We aren't big, we aren't old. So it would take a huge outpouring from subscribers to make a dent. Send an e-mail to writersdig@fwpubs.com with subject line, "101 Best Newsletters for Authors" and let them know what this newsletter does for you!

Metaphors and Similes to Make You Smile:

(Every year English teachers from across the country submit their collections of analogies and metaphors actually found in high school essays. I can't acknowledge the resource but I thought they might not mind if I published them one at a time. I also thought some of you might have some favorites you could contribute.)

Here is one of the teachers' favorites:

" Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze."

=======================================================
When was the last time you bought a book from an author you know? "Tracings" my new chapbook of poetry is available for that honor at
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599240173/qid=1141623936/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-4692447-2218401?s=books&v=glance&n=283155
but any book mentioned in any one of your "Sharing with Writers" newsletters would be a nice gesture. If all of us directed more of our reading to newer authors who write in genres we love or genres we need to stretch into, we would do ourselves and the publishing industry a great favor.
