Subject: [Sharing with Writers] Do A Virtual Tour or Drop -By Visit but Do It Right

October xx 2006 Sharing with Writers:
From the Desks
Of Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Authors' Coalition Friends
~~~:.~~~.:~~~.:~~~:.~~~.:~~~.:~~~:.~~~. ~~~~~~~~~~
"Sharing with Writers" is the official newsletter of Authors' Coalition,
Note from Carolyn:
Dear Authors' Coalition Members and Subscribers:
This was my breakdown week.
Those of you know me know I am generally on a high--annoyingly so, many would say I'm sure. Last night I lost it and this morning I was in tears.
Actually, it has probably been coming on for a while. The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success should have been in the hands of my publisher in August and isn't even in the mail to my editor (May I remind you that it's October).
I have unread e-mails stacked up and AOL was out of whack for several days while I was presenting at a conference. I came back to a notice that it had turned away heaven knows how many of you weren't among the mere 1,000 messages it did accept.
And then there is the website bugaboo. I was ecstatic after Joyce Faulkner (author of In the Shadow of Suribachi) helped me set up my new howtodoitfrually.com site. We only did two pages but they were superb with a little event crawler, a downloadable .pdf of my media kit, etc.
Last night the site went to hell in a handbasket along with the Authors' Coalition site and I am reevaluating. It may not be January but I am turning over a new leaf.
I resigned from the critique group I was facilitating on a volunteer basis, put the new site to bed to be worked on slowly at a later time (maybe even in another life) and have made some other adjustments. One of them is that this newsletter will only be coming out on a bi-weekly basis. I may send you important extra messages on occasion, but there you have it.
Wish me luck. I hope you, too, will reevaluate so that you can enjoy writing more, not less.
Best,
Carolyn Howard-Johnson
Tip: From Allyn Evans, author of "Grab the Queen Power: Live Your Best Life!"
http://www.allynevans.com/: I just signed up to receive Google alerts for my name and book name on Google. It's a great way to keep track of when your name or book or website goes up on the web. And it's so easy to do.
http://www.google.com/alerts
When you sign on, put quotation marks around your title and/or your name so that you don't get alerts on every word in your search but only on the right combination of words.
I got the idea from an article about Internet safety for children in Prevention magazine, and then decided it would be great way to monitor my own work and activity on the web.
=======================================================
Please pass this letter on to others. Unlike many others, I do not mind if you use only portions of it as long as you credit the writers and include this subscribe information. "To subscribe to 'Sharing with Writers' send an e-mail to HoJoNews@aol.com with 'subscribe' in the subject line."
Open Letter on Fairness in Publishing:
(Pauline Field, activist and editor of a newsletter for men and women interested in gender equality (and other equality as well), sent this notice to me. I thought you all--writers of both genders--would find it interesting and possibly actionable. She mentions Ellen Snortland, a good friend and wonderful columnist. To subscribe to Pauline's newsletter, send her an e-mail with "subscribe" in the subject line to pfield@fieldworks.net.)
In yesterday's edition of Women's ENews, there was an article on the discouraging findings from new studies on women in the media.
Recent byline studies of influential magazines--no matter their slot on the political spectrum--publish far fewer articles by women than men. On average, women write one article for every three by men in the Atlantic, Harper's, the New York Times Magazine, the New Yorker and Vanity Fair.
The ratio of male to female contributing writers for progressive magazines was a 30:5 ratio, the Washington Monthly, 26:4; and 21:12 at the American Prospect. Only In These Times, at 6:6, offered parity.
PBS's NewsHour has fewer than 2 out of 10 female guests…
Progress in two key areas--expanding the number of women in journalism and advancing more to top jobs and improving the ways women are depicted in newspapers, magazines and on television--has been inconsistent.
Locally (Southern California), Ellen Snortland's columns for the Pasadena Weekly, have been cut from every week to every other week…
It's important that readers, viewers and listeners step up to exert pressure. We must keep asking editors for more material from female writers, reporters and commentators whose work we admire and want to see more of. If you have been reading Ellen’s column, for instance, now is the time to let the editor at the Pasadena Weekly that… they need to re-consider. And while you are writing, why not send some of the numbers from this article and remind the Pasadena Weekly that they are supposed to be an “alternative” newspaper – to represent not just the Pablum available in other local press, but other views such as that expressed in Ellen’s “Consider This” column. [The editor's name is Kevin Urich, his e-mail is kevinu@pasadenaweekly.com.]
We [could also send to editors] examples of work we regard as important to our local media outlets and ask that they employ that writer or explore that topic and suggest a woman to do it.
We need to praise editors when they feature strong work from female journalists and columnists and pester them when they don't.
We need to do this not once, and not for just one woman, but consistently and generously and for many. And we need to enlist our colleagues, friends, family and other fans of female journalists in this effort.
We can do this by e-mail, phone or U.S. mail. The medium doesn't matter; the message does.
Tip: Kathe Gogolewski, a retired classroom teacher turned author of children's books, has been selling her book, Tato, a fantasy adventure for middle grade readers, to classrooms all over California. In her new free e-book, she outlines four components that can help you complete a successful sale of your program to a school or teachers. It is loaded with tips for: 1) writing simple lesson plans for your book, 2) finding grants to pay for you and your books 3) approaching teachers or administrators, and 4) creating your presentation for the students. Feel free to absorb each section alone or in combination with others. For the more ambitious, the sections can help you realize your goals when worked together, but each section will work alone. Feel free to use the guide in either capacity. Find it at: http://tri-studio.com/EbookMarketingtoTeachers.html and once that Authors' Coalition site is back up, you'll be able to find it on the free e-book page there, too.
Practical Suggestions for Your Virtual Book Tour:
(From Janet Elaine Smith who is always willing to share her how-to-do it ideas on promotion with SWW subscribers. Consider her PromoPaks at http://starpublish.com )
Before you set off on a virtual book tour, remember that you are visiting various blogs as a guest. You don't run the show. Always leave a comment about something in the blog before you issuing an invitation to partake of something you have to offer, whether it is to purchase your book, to visit your blog or to hang out at your website. Sadly common courtesy is all too often in short supply.
The best way to find blogs that best fit your virtual tour is with this search: www.blogsearch.google.com. Don't just look for the obvious; be creative. After all, we are all writers, and imagination is our forte. And look for something that you can tie your book into. Let me give you a couple of examples. You know, show; don't tell!
My book Par for the Course is a timetravel that takes a modern day golf pro and sends her back in time to golf with Mary, Queen of Scots, at St. Andrews Golf Course in Scotland. Mary was the first woman golfer--true fact.
OK, so I did a search for Mary, Queen of Scots. History buffs who like to follow her are always looking for new info. Many of them do not know that she was the first known woman golfer. (I found that info in an old kids' encyclopedia.) So, when I find a blog about Mary, I go to it and ask a simple question: "Do you know what sport Mary, Queen of Scots, was noted for? If you don't, you can find out in my time travel, Par for the Course. If you do, or if you want to take a guess, come on over to my blog at www.janetelainesmith.blogspot.com and leave me a comment." Then I leave a comment about their blog, like "I was pleased to learn that Mary was the tallest woman in Scotland at the time she lived. I am a firm believer that I am never too old to learn something new."
Another one I did was for my book In St. Patrick's Custody. I did a lot of similar blog entries to the one above only tied to this book of when it was close to St. Patrick's Day. I then invited the blog visitors to go to Patrick and Grace's website, http://crumbycapers.tripod.com
(a fictional website I set up especially for the protagonists of that book--another promotional idea, by the way!) and leave me a note in the guestbook. Happy St. Paddy's Day!
Another one I did for In St. Patrick's Custody was in connection with homelessness, because Grace ended up in a homeless shelter. That one got picked up and noticed by a few print newspapers and it led to a couple of actual print interviews about the issue of homelessness.
I don't always leave a bunch of signature lines in a blog, but I do give the info if it pertains to the book I'm blogging about at the time. For instance, with Par for the Course, I usually include "Named best timetravel of the year by Affaire de Coeur Magazine."
With In St. Patrick's Custody I might end with something like "Responsible for countless new volunteers in homeless shelters across the country."
Metaphors and Similes to Make You Smile:
(Every year English teachers from across the country submit their collections of analogies and metaphors actually found in high school essays. I can't acknowledge the resource but I thought they might not mind if I published them one at a time. I also thought some of you might have some favorites you could contribute.)
Here is one of the teachers' favorites. Anyone who remembers the old story problems we were given at math time in grade school will appreciate this:
"Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 p.m. at a speed of 35 mph."
======================================================
When was the last time you bought a book from an author you know? "Tracings" my new chapbook of poetry is available for that honor at www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599240173/qid=1141623936/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-4692447-2218401?s=books&v=glance&n=283155
but any book mentioned in any one of your "Sharing with Writers" newsletters would be a nice gesture. If all of us directed more of our reading to newer authors who write in genres we love or genres we need to stretch into, we would do ourselves and the publishing industry a great favor.
