Note from Carolyn:
Dear Subscribers and Authors' Coalition Members:
This newsletter comes with an invitation to participate in Authors' Coalition's booth at the LA Times/UCLA Festival of Books April 28 and 29 of 2007. Many of you have been waiting for this information. It will be a surprise to others. Scroll down to the end of the newsletter and take your time reading of the many opportunities your AC directors and I have planned for you. You don't have to be present to partake!!
Also, please don't wait. One of the reasons this booth is successful is that we don't just throw books into a bin and let people riffle through it. Each is given a space of its own and lighted. That means that the opportunities are limited. Ditto for the associated catalogs and CDs we produce.
I hope that we can fill the booth with subscribers but I will be opening up the opportunities to all shortly. You get first dibs.
Best,
Carolyn Howard-Johnson

Letters a la Ann Landers:
Frances Lynn, www.franceslynn.org, a new member of Authors' Coalition has taken to building Listmania lists on Amazon as recommended in The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't. She writes:
She writes:
…I put my novels at the top of some of my lists. II think it was you (?), who said that was not a very good thing to do - it looks too much like self-promotion. (Can't see how I can delete that list either).
And here's how I advised her:
I think I said that Amazon prefers that you put others' books first. They used to monitor that rule and reprimand you if you installed yours at the top of the list, but they seem to have gotten more author-friendly and I've been doing it for some time and they haven't said anything. No, I wouldn't ever say "it looks too much like self-promotion" because I don't think self- or writer-promotion is a bad thing. I do think, however, that our passion for our own work in the ways that it can help others (through charities or in the topics or themes we choose to write about) should be closely tied to the promotion we do. In fact, my motto might be "If we aren't passionate enough about what we do to promote ourselves, perhaps we should change professions."
Anyone interested in seeing Frances's list may go to:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/richpub/listmania/fullview/RBRGXVKEVE3EA/ref=cm_lm_dtpa_fvlm_ctr_1/202-6400337-6423028 Be sure to vote (that is, you say you find the Listmania helpful) while you're there. I had to scroll to the bottom of the list to find that voting button today -- Amazon is always moving them around. When you've built a list, ask your friends to vote, too. Anyone who reads should appreciate your recommendations.

At the request of a subscriber or two I am reducing the size of this newsletter but only a tad. Generally I will be running only a few of the reciprocal links (even though all of them may be useful to you.) They will rotate. In this one, because of the long fair offer, I will run none. Once my new HowToDoItFrugally.com site is up they will all transfer to that site on a permanent basis. I'll give you the link then.) Those of you who are on this link exchange, please be patient. (-:

Marketing in the News:
(Read the entire article by Jeninne Lee-St.John in Time Magazine, Nov. 6 issue, p. 61)
There may be nothing new about job-seekers hiring marketing consultants but the process appears to be taking a page from the writing world, perhaps even from the Frugal Book Promoter. Called branding consultants, these advisors are furnishing not only people who seek jobs but people who want to do better in life with taglines. Yes they are! They help their clients distill an image that is individual (and exciting!) -- something I've been nudging authors to do for a long time.
These marketers say that "kids coming out of college are essentially generic." If you think about it, if we writers don't figure out our approach to branding and highlight what is important about us, or about our writing, we can be pretty generic, too. (There is a reason the word generic is related to genre.)
So these branding consultants provide a motto and/or tagline for résumés. The writer of this article in Time was advised to tag herself "Curious about Everything. Passionate about Writing." Something similar would work for a writer with no clips, too.
Authors' Coalition (http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com ) has such a tagline:
"AC is the current that propels your writing career."
I have one I use when I teach or speak to professionals -- from writers to retailers. Even though it isn't really about me, it lets people know what I am trying to do (and, of course, that goes for this newsletter, the Authors' Coalition organization and more). It is:
"“Careers that are not fed soon die as readily as any living organism given no sustenance.”
What is yours? You may not wear several hats but if you do, you should vary it depending on the message you're trying to get across. You should use it frequently enough that your audience would recognize it as yours if they saw it somewhere unattached to say, your website?
I don't have one for my poetry or creative writing. Do any of you have any ideas for me? (-: Let me know what you come up with for yourself, too!

Tip: Need help with the motto I mentioned in this newsletter -- you know, the one you should have for yourself? Go to www.yudkin.com/generate.htm. Marcia Yudkin will lead you to one step-by-step.

Opportunities:
Yackers and Writers from David Whelan, dwhelan2@gmail.com
Hello everyone,
My name is Lawrence Ross and I'm a 2nd year MFA screenwriting student. As the author of three books, I began thinking about better ways to find new readers for my books, other than conducting book signings. 434s pretty much eliminated book tours as a way to promote my books, so I wondered why wasn't there a social networking site (think MySpace or Facebook) devoted to authors, book lovers, and the book industry? How come lovers of Stephen King, Anne Rice, Eric Jerome Dickey, and thousands of other authors, can't come to one site and interact with those authors and each other? From those questions emerged my new site, TheYack ( http://www.theyack.com/).
TheYack is the first social networking site devoted to books, authors and book lovers. Following in the footsteps of 2001 UCLA TFT alum Tom Anderson (MySpace founder), I think TheYack will be a hit as authors have longed to combine a site where they can post a personal blog/website, with the interactivity of a social network. NPR, CNET, and Publishers Weekly are all covering the launch (yesterday, I opened the site for registration), and we're going to have authors such as Dave Barry, E.Lynn Harris, and others answering questions from our Yacksters. In addition, TheYack will have editors and agents who will be available to answer questions from those of you who are aspiring authors.
So if you're interested in supporting TheYack, please feel free to join today. It's free, it's fun, and you'll meet new friends. Also, feel free to forward this information about TheYack to any and everyone you think may be interested, and of course, any media. Whether you're interested in biography, chicklit, history, fiction or non-fiction, TheYack is your site for books and authors! Thanks!

Sun Signs for Writers:
This is a reprint from Bev Walton Porter's new book published by Writer's Digest. It was just given a five-star review by Midwest Books.
Scorpio Author Mini-profile:
Neil Gaiman
"You get ideas from daydreaming. You get ideas from being bored. You get ideas all the time. The only difference between writers and other people is we notice when we're doing it."
--Neil Gaiman
Author Neil Gaiman creates fictional worlds that are at once dark, odd, and humorous. A Scorpio scribe born on November 10, 1960, Gaiman even makes death look and sound good. As creator of the Sandman series of graphic novels, Gaiman is both prolific and diverse in his writing talents. He can be described as a modern-day Jack of all Trades, having written a wide variety of creative material, including articles, essays, reviews, comics, novels, graphic novels, children’s books, poetry, scripts, adaptations, and songs. His first book, published in 1984, was a biography of the 80s band Duran Duran. The recipient of numerous awards, Gaiman has won 13 Eisner awards, six Locus awards, four Bram Stoker awards, three Hugos, two Nebulas, and an International Horror Guild Award, among others.
Gaiman displays the tell-tale signs of the work ethic so often demonstrated by Scorpios; that is, Scorpios have a knack for tackling daunting workloads that would render the rest of us mere mortals exhausted and spent. Yet, Scorpios dispatch Herculean tasks in such a quick and efficient way that they make it seem effortless. Challenges never frighten those born under this writer sign. In fact, there’s no fun in a writing task for them unless it’s full of challenge and tests their skills!
Scorpios aren’t often associated with writing light or white-light, fluffy tales (although I’m sure there are exceptions out there), but they certainly have a talent for taking the direst tale imaginable and putting a humorous spin on it. This talent for dark humor is evident in much of Neil’s work. Readers will also discover a taste of obsession, sexuality, and villainy. It is also interesting to note that black is the color most associated with Scorpio, and Gaiman is known for wearing black clothes, especially leather jackets and black tee-shirts. While the author claims his decision to dress in black is one he arrived at because he believes he has no “dress sense,” one has to chuckle at the astrological connection nonetheless. Scorpio…black clothing…it fits!
Neil Gaiman exhibits the best traits of a Scorpio is operating at his or her best. Driven and intense, even if they aren’t as showy about it as are some of their astrological counterparts (Leo, for example), Scorpio writers like Gaiman consistently produce fresh and exciting stories that twist reality and plumb the depths of the human (hidden) psyche. Ruled by the planet Pluto -- the planet known for transformation, destruction, and rebirth – Gaiman’s sun sign traits undoubtedly surface in both his prose and his poetry. This is why countless readers across the globe can’t seem to get enough of the man who’s been dubbed one of the top ten living postmodern writers.

AC's Next Fair Opportunity:
Dear Authors' Coalition members and "Sharing with Writers" subscribers:
Our next event sponsored by Authors’ Coalition is the LA Times/UCLA Festival of Books coming in April of 2007. This year we are combining the offer with an opportunity to also exhibit at the West Hollywood Bookfest in September of 2007 Frequency, after all, is the golden guideline for great promotion.
This year you can have your book displayed F R^ E ^E. by participating in other value-added promotions associated with the fair. See below for details.
Many of you have been asking about plans for the next UCLA Fair. Here they are:
Authors' Coalition will again be sponsoring a double booth at the LA Times/UCLA Festival of Booth on April 28 and 29 of 2007. As many of you know from my blog (http://redenginepress/chjohnson) and from past experience, we make changes every year based on what we learned the year before.
Last year we opened the fair booth to authors who live outside the LA area. That worked very well. Those of you without travel budgets thought it was a great way to have your books exposed at a prestigious venue in a different part of the country. That we limited the number of books accepted meant that each featured book was displayed well.
This year we are also making some changes. Please keep reading to find out!
The LA Times/UCLA Festival of Books
The booth will most likely be in the same spot on the UCLA campus as it was last year--an excellent one, I might add.
It will be a double booth where readers can browse inside the booth, touch and peruse your book.
Display: Those books accepted for display will be shown on a bookstand, not tossed into a bin with thousands of others. The display area will be lighted. There will be a place for each participant to have a flier 4 x 5 3/4 and, give-away bookmarks or business cards--any two of the three. They may also supply laminated signs with grommets to be hung around the perimeter of the booth.
You may have your book displayed at no cost in the West Hollywood Bookfest as well as the LA Book fair with purchase of the value-added catalog and CD (see details below).
No books will be sold out of the booth except by signing authors.
Those who do not wish to participate in both the catalog and the CD can choose one or the other and purchase booth display for $60 per event (Los Angeles and West Hollywood). Based on our experience in prior years, we recommend all participants pay to be included in the catalog and CD. See the entries in our blog that worked as a journal of our experiences last year. It is at http://redenginepress.com/chjohnson.
Signing Segments at Fair Also Available:
Local authors or authors willing to travel may purchase one hour segments of signing time. Those signing will be posted in the booth Sorry, but the LA Times Festival of Books administration does not provide a way to list multiple authors in the brochures, etc. that the LA Times sends out so signing authors will be responsible for their own promotions (including media releases and invitations) to drive traffic to their signing.
One hour signing segments cost $140 for the first and $100 for a second hour. The fee includes display in the booth for the full two days. If you choose to sign, we strongly recommend that participants consider the stands and banners we tested last year to make their signing times a standout. (Information on these amazingly-effective stands to come!). All signing positions are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Gift with Purchase: We have books to give away free with purchase of books by those signing but we will be pleased to accept books as giveaways from participants for this purpose as well. We think donating books is a wonderful way to use damaged books, overstock, etc. Books in the hands of readers bear more fruit than books stowed in a closet. (-:.
Disposal of Fair Materials: Books and promotion materials will not be returned. Depending on the program selected, books will be donated to a library after the LA or West Hollywood Fair.
The Catalog
Based on last year's success, we are offering a catalog again this year. This is a cross-promotional effort and those who participate are expected to contribute names of bookstores in their area and to follow up with phone calls to the book buyers after the catalog goes out. That's what makes this super-successful, the personal contact with the buyers who then pay special attention to the catalog so that all participants -- regardless of the area they live in--benefit. Participants also benefit from their name being associated with a prestigious fair. Prices are:
1/8 page: $125
1/4 page: $250
1/2 page: $500
Full page: $1000.
These prices include ad set up, ad space, printing, and the postage to book buyers and press contacts. It also includes a pdf copy of the booklet that each participant may produce (print) on their own to use at their own events throughout the year. You can see how this cross promotion could snowball. We ask that no changes be made to the catalog and that it be given away, not sold. If there is a demand for printing, we may also offer that service.
Non-members of Authors’ Coalition or those not participating in the full program, please add $20 to cover your membership.
Catalog Details:
A sample catalog from last year is available on request.
Authors may participate in this catalog only or in combination with some of the others programs listed below.
Those who participate in the catalog and the CD program will be displayed in booths at both the LA Times booth (April 2007) and the West Hollywood Bookfest (fall of 2007) at no cost. We are offering value-added programs, using the fair itself as a credibility builder.
The costs listed are for paid members of Authors' Coalition. To support our sponsor, Authors’ Coalition, all participants will either be a member or will be asked to pay $20 for a basic membership fee.
Participation in this catalog is limited.
This catalog will be sent out to at least 500 bookstore buyers and Los Angeles press contacts by mail.
This catalog will be circulated by e-mail to bookstores for which we have e-addresses.
This catalog will be circulated to bookstores personally selected by the participants as well as others.
Those who wish to list more than one book in this catalog will receive a 10% discount on the 2nd ad, 20% on the third.
The CD
We are offering a promotional CD again this year.
The CD ROM includes book titles, book covers, author biographies, one review of each book, and a story or excerpt from each participating author.
Authors' Coalition will burn 1,000 (or more, depending on participation) to be given to visitors and the press corps at the fair.
This year authors will be able to purchase additional CDs to send to their own press contacts or readers or to use throughout the year.
They will also have the right to make copies on their own to distribute at events as give-aways. We ask only that no changes be made to content. Therefore, each author who participates must see that this kind of cross-promotion will benefit them and be willing to let their CD partners distribute the CDs at will. In other words, participants who actively promote with the CD will continue to benefit themselves and others.
These CDs will include professional design on each disc.
There will be a small additional fee to cover webmaster's time for any authors who wish to include multiple books.
CD Cost:
A: $200 fee includes webmaster fees, the CDs and sleeves, and the right to produce additional CDs. We will produce a minimum of 1,000.
Additional CDs (a service for those unable to burn their own for future use), $50. plus shipping and handling for 50. Graduated discounts are available.
A Tote Program
Last year we found fair-goers were extremely receptive to free bags. This year we plan to have a tote promotion. Details will depend on the participation level.
We envision totes that are roomy enough for their book purchases and designed so that imprinted book covers on the sides will be easily visible to fair-goers.
We prefer a canvas tote.
We think six to eight book covers pictures may be imprinted on each side of the bag but that will also be determined depending on the rate of participation.
Cost will be determined by the number of participants and the number of bags we produce. The cost for bags goes down as the quantity increases.
Because bags become cheaper as the production number rises and because we realize that the more exposure they get, the more all benefit, we would like to make bags available for participants year round, for them to use at any event they participate in. You can see that your book would be exposed to readers even at fairs and events at which you have no other presence.
A new member of AC will be handling this and a big thanks goes out to her. When I have more space, I'll introduce her complete with a little biography.
Based on last year’s outcome, we have decided not to provide a bag-stuffing program raffle.
No refunds can be given for inclement weather.
Participation in these fairs and the associated promotions are limited.
