Note from Carolyn:
Dear Subscribers and Authors' Coalition Members:
Because I know that tips are my subscribers' favorite part of "Sharing with Writers," you probably all will notice the tip below giving you a new (I hope) way to sell autographed copies of your book.
You'll also note my admission that I don't have a sales feature on my website and probably won't have on the new one I am working on (at least not any day soon). I'm just not that techy--yet. (-:
However, here's the thing. Offering autographed copies is an excellent way to sell books.
Even though many of you already have The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't, I'm offering autographed copies for Christmas giving (or for yourself). I'll also send people who order a
f r ^ ^ sample media kit designed especially to use to get speaking gigs. It's something you can use as a template or pass it on to whomever you give Frugal (or both).
Just send me an e-mail and I'll give you an address to send a check for the discounted price of $15., postage paid in the continental USA. If you want your Frugal before Christmas, e-mail me before Saturday November 18. Put "Frugal Order" in the subject line and let me know if you want me to dedicate it to someone or just sign it.
If an autograph means nothing to you, purchase Frugal or any of my other books on Amazon and I'll still send you the template. Just e-mail me Amazon's receipt
Ordering this is a trust thing. You tell me you want Frugal, I send the book, give you my address and wait for your check. And I e-mail you the media kit (by attachment).
We're all in this together. BTW, that's also why you really should think of an author-friend who needs such a gift for the holidays. (-:
Best,
Carolyn Howard-Johnson

PSS: I'm also making this a resource edition. Many editors, newsletters, etc. are listed as the last feature in this newsletter. Take the time to look at them. What resources there are you missing out on?
PSSS: This newsletter is early. There will be no newsletter over Thanksgiving. I'll be off loafing in the sun.

Hi Carolyn,
I purchased your book, The Frugal Promoter about a month ago. I don't think I've ever come across a book so packed with useful information. There is no "filler" or "fluff", just pages and chapters of stuff you can use.
Continued success.

Be a Guest Speaker on College Campuses:
Do you live near a college or university? If so, you may be a professor's dream.
I have appeared as a guest at UCLA, Cal State Northridge and others more than a dozen times in the last few years and will appear again at Eve Caram's class on novel writing at UCLA Wednesday, Nov. 29th. Here's how to grow your appearances on colleges as I have.
1. Contact instructors in your field of expertise.
2. Contact people you have taken classes from in the past. They, most likely, will be in a field related your expertise and will be thrilled to support one of their own former students
3. Tell them you are available as a guest speaker--for a class or for a college wide event.
4. Mention you'd be happy to do it at no charge.
5. When they say yes, take books to show, books to sell, a handout. On the handout include a little bio and order information for your books.
6. When the professor raves, ask her if she will recommend you to others or if you can use her name as a recommendation.
7. Watch your branding and book sales grow.
PS: Ask who plans campus events as well. Send a query by e-mail and follow up by sending a media kit by post. A couple weeks later, check by phone. Put on your speaking voice and watch the successes roll in.

Material above may be used in Carolyn Howard-Johnson's book in progress, tentative titled Frugal Promotions for the Advanced Promoter or Frugal II. (-;

Tips: Unfortunately many authors are looking for ways to sell books. I preach against this. I say, "Promote and the sales follow (but usually you won't be able to tell which promotion did the trick, probably because marketing is cumulative)." Here's a site where you win both ways. Great personal promotion and maybe even additional sales. I haven't done it because I don't (yet) sell from my site!) http://www.autographedbyauthor.com/

Fun and F r * *: If you purchased The Frugal Book Promoter in the past, I'd love for you to review it on Amazon or BN.com, perhaps just tell what part of it you found most valuable. As a thank you, of course. HoJoNews@aol.com

Turning Lucky Lemons into Apple Martinis
No bit of publicity, however wrong, should be wasted. I heard from Google's search feature that my name cropped up in the Decatur Times but there was an error. Here's how I turned the lucky boo-boo to my advantage.
The article said: "Other books available on this topic include "The Low-Carb Comfort Food Cookbook" by Michael and Mary Dan Eades, "How to Design Your Own Low-Carb Diet" by Carolyn Howard-Johnson; and …." See the full article at:
http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/food/061108/carb.shtml
Most of you know that I haven't written a book on low carb diets. The Decatur staff writer was referring to an Amazon So You'd Like To… I wrote. The lesson here is that showing up on Amazon as I advise in an entire Frugal chapter can get you some notice.
The other lesson to be learned is that you can take advantage of an innocent error and still make it OK for your fellow writers: I used the occasion to suggest another possibility to her. Here's my letter to her:
Dear Patrice:
Thank you for the mention in your Lusciously Low Carb article! Actually, though I have written several books, "How to Design Your Own Low Carb Diet" is really only an essay I wrote on the So You'd Like To....feature of Amazon.com. Nevertheless I am delighted it inspired Jo Ann, as it was based on experiences I had when I was trying to bring myself back to health after a bout with cancer and hypoglycemia. No bad experience ever goes wasted, I guess. (-:
If you'd like to read more about that experience and others that brought me to writing, let me know and I'll send you a first person essay, "Life Begins at 60." Take care, and thanks again for the mention.
Wait! That's not all! Then I sent a letter-to-the-editor of the Decatur Times. I praised the staff writer for her article, mentioned the correction, and worked in one of my book titles.
One never knows what will come of such an effort but if something does, people in Decatur may see one of titles in print! (-:

When was the last time you bought a book from an author you know? "Tracings" my new chapbook of poetry is available for that honor at www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599240173/qid=1141623936/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-4692447-2218401?s=books&v=glance&n=283155
but any book mentioned in any one of your "Sharing with Writers" newsletters would be a nice gesture. If all of us directed more of our reading to newer authors who write in genres we love or genres we need to stretch into, we would do ourselves and the publishing industry a great favor.

Metaphors and Similes to Make You Smile
(Every year English teachers from across the country submit their collections of analogies and metaphors actually found in high school essays. I can't acknowledge the resource but I thought they might not mind if I published them one at a time. I also thought some of you might have some favorites you could contribute.)
