Dear Subscribers and Authors' Coalition Members:

You are all busy for the holidays so I figured a picture is worth a thousand words. You will need to click on the Authors' Den link above to see this issue with the picture! It's of the rescue Great Dane we gave ourselves for Christmas. Our last one (the famous one on the cover of This Is the Place) died a few months ago. Here is a picture of our new one:

Isn't she beautiful? Her name is Malibu Barbie. No we didn't give her that name, but it seems to suit her. Though she is gun-metal gray, breeders call her blue and she is about 120 pounds.
If you're interested in adopting a large breed--from a mastiff to a borzoi, see http://gentlegiantsrescue.com/. What a way to give yourself a seasonal gift.

Letters-to-the-Editor:

This letter was left on my guest book at AuthorsDen.com/carolynhowardjohnson. It is a great example of how to make guest books and blogs work for you.

Your book The Frugal Book Promoter is great. I highly recommend it. I have learned much from it and I want to thank you for writing it. There is a wealth of information compiled in the book and
I am still learning. I feel it is a book that should be required reading for any author. You had ideas that I had never thought of and I have started to use the information you gave in your book. I have a web site: www.myqualitywriting.com where I have tried to post information to help other writers and I would appreciate your comments.

Dear Carolyn:

Thank you for publishing Chris Meeks’ article, SOME LESSONS FROM A MIDDLE-AGED WRITER. It contains some great information, but also contains some errors.

He says: The Middle-Aged Man and the Sea is one of an expected 200,000 new titles this year with ISBN numbers and available to bookstores. That doesn’t count the probably 100,000 other titles produced without ISBN numbers by print-on-demand publishers such as Lulu, iUniverse, AuthorHouse, Xlibris, and others.

At least three POD publishers, iUniverse, Booklocker and Infinity, and I’m sure many others, produce books with ISBN identification. Also, “numbers” is redundant since the N in ISBN stands for number.

He says of POD: It’s difficult to get POD books in bookstores. If you want big sales, seek out an agent who will get your book to traditional publishers. Traditional publishers, too, may end up promoting your book far more than you can.

Though bookstores might be reluctant to stock POD books, if you have a good product it’s possible to get them into bookstores. Robert W. Pelton has produced a series of historical cookbooks, published by Infinity (POD), which are stocked in the bookstores of dozens of historical sites throughout the United States. Many thousands of copies of his books have been sold, and his bookstore market base is still growing. Incidentally, in the past 40 years, Pelton has had about 100 titles published by traditional publishers, but he says he makes more money and has better control by publishing POD than through traditional publishers.

Pelton also has experience self-publishing
(non-POD) survival handbooks, which also sold many thousands of copies. All of this without benefit of the Internet. He does his own promotion, and does it better than many “traditional” publishers would do it, because he knows his product and understands his readership.

Chris Meeks says: Shoppers can go to the POD publisher’s website to buy books, but most POD titles sell under a hundred copies—mainly to friends and family.

This can be true, but not always. I can go to my
local Barnes and Noble, Border Books, Amazon.com and other booksellers (on-line or bricks and motor locations) to order my book, Awe-Full Moments: Spirituality in the Commonplace, and it will be delivered within a couple of days. Anyone can do the same thing. It isn’t necessary for a buyer to go to iUniverse to order my book. Many, many traditionally published books have to be ordered the same way because they aren’t on the shelves in bookstores.

There was some solid information in Chris Meeks article, which I appreciated, but his prejudice toward POD, and factual inaccuracies were disturbing.

Best wishes,
Richard Bauman
Awe-Full Moments: Spirituality in the Commonplace www.richardbauman.com

For the record, Chris Meeks's book, The Middle-Aged Man and the Sea, is self-published on a POD press (Lulu).

Also, see below for a little more on the term POD and some associated terms. (-:

Carolyn:

I agreed with most of what [Christopher Meeks] said in your newsletter, but this passage [by subscriber Christopher Meeks] jumped out at me.

"Nonetheless, book readers seem to read newspapers and magazines more than online articles and reviews. Aim for as many newspaper book editors as you can."

Book editors are a bit like bookstores - a terrible place to sell books! I've found the most successful articles are anywhere in the newspaper BUT the book pages. First of all, they are very difficult to get in (especially in larger papers) and secondly, only "book people" tend to read them.

Get in the sections that your audience reads - entertainment, lifestyle, sports, local interest, business, -- something, anything, but books!

It is what you and I both say time and again -- identify your readers and go where they are.

Off my soapbox now....

POD Presses and Other Matters

I know I am fighting a losing battle here but the term POD refers to only the press a book is published on. Many traditional publishers use POD presses (Print on Demand) for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately we tend to misuse the term when we mean self-published or subsidy-published and that obfuscates almost any discussion on the subject of publishing.

To further complicate the matter, some subsidy publishers (Xlibris and their ilk) can and do sometimes choose to use offset presses (the kind we used to use in the days when the word vanity press was the derogatory term of choice).
Many of the bigger self-publishers also use offset presses, even though their books are completely self-produced. YOU can use an offset press, too, to publish anything your little heart desires. You just must be prepared to print runs in large numbers.

Because we are all writers here, I'm hoping we can refine our terms a bit so we all look as if we are communicating in the same language. We all know how important language is. Let's wipe out the term Vanity Press as outmoded and tainted by prejudices that are no longer valid (because they are generalizations that don't apply to everyone in the group of writers who are not traditionally published) and let's use POD to mean only that technology that allows us to print one book at a time thus making publishing available to more wonderful authors and publishers every year.

Best,
CHJ

Tip: I keep a little library on my piano between bookends. It is ever-expanding and now nearly tipping off the edges of the spinet. It contains only books my name appears in.
It may appear in acknowledgments, blurbs, as a quoted expert or writer of forewords. Of course, my own books are there, too. That may seem silly to some of you but here is the tip: A collection like this reminds you of how far you've come when you have a down day or start thinking that all your promotion efforts are for naught. We all know publicity is hard to trace. Well, this is a way to keep a visual before you, even though it isn't a statistic. (-:

From the Mouth of an Expert:

(Well-known promoter and writer Shel Horowitz gave me permission to pass on his answer to a writer on a list-serve we both frequent. She wanted to know how best to participate in the coming Book Expo America. )

If you haven't attended [BEA] before, I'd strongly recommend walking the floor rather than taking a booth. After ten years, I am still walking the floor--though I have often exhibited at PMA and some of the other cooperative stands. Yes, PMA offers very well-located booths, but they also display individual books for a very reasonable fee.

From walking the floor, I've actually gotten a book contract (Grassroots Marketing: Getting Noticed in a Noisy World). From the PMA co-op booth, I've gotten two foreign rights sales. From walking the floor, I've also gotten tons of contacts, speaking gigs, copywriting clients, expert advice...

This year, I'll be exhibiting Grassroots Marketing for Authors and
Publishers with PMA.

Letters a la Ann Landers:

A Sharing with Writers subscriber writes:

I had more or less decided to throw up my hands and let [my book] sink or swim under its own weight...but, I am newly encouraged. Of course, I would like to get on with my new book....

Carolyn's Answer:
Oooh! Please don't do this, Monica. The work you do promoting this first book will continue to propel the next--from the networking and contacts you make to the fan base you build. Of course, you'll need a balance (something I have trouble doing, too! ) But don't give up! Publicity builds on itself. If you let your publicity lie fallow on your early books as you write your new ones, you lose your momentum.

That's my pep talk for the day. (-:

Promo Idea:

Subscribers Janet Elaine Smith and Allyn Evans reminded me of a site that would work well for many of us. I listed my own books on it a long time ago but it is designed for people to use as a catalog for their own libraries. Still, to have one's book listed in many, many people's libraries might work to our advantage. Allyn, author of Grab the Queen Power: Live Your Best Life, reminds me that the traffic report shows that this site is a popular one. Find them at: http://www.librarything.com/.

Now, here's how the power of a great list-serve, newsletter or authors' group like Authors' Coalition. We can make a difference by working together. We'd need someone to coordinate it, of course, but you add their books to your library, they add yours. You can see how this process could mushroom creating a network on this site. These would work like links. An SWW subscriber adds your book to their library list, you promise to add theirs to yours.

I know it's a busy time of year but think about it. Maybe someone could start a Yahoo Group specifically for this purpose. This could be a great way to increase networking capabilities, especially those of you who need to utilize any method possible because your write fiction, not easy-to-promote how-to books.

A reminder, here: I am a fiction writer and poet, too. I know how hard it is to promote these genres. Nevertheless it can be done!

Even if this doesn't work, if each of you went to this site and registered your own books and a fellow author's book, too, think of the power! Sure that one book could be Grisham or Rice but how about sending out a little Karma for writers who aren't that famous?

To Salute! Thank you to the editors of this great newsletter. Their target audience is those interested in the military, subjects of war (and peace) and those who support our troops. They ran a lovely reminder that my chapbook Tracings won an award from the Military Writers of America. It includes several poems built around my childhood memories of World War II and of watching my grandson off to Iraq, in this, our current war. Here is a small quotation for those of you who don't know me as anything other than The Frugal Book Promoter.

"It is 1940. I settle into my uncle’s
arms, he on his way to pilot B42s,
something about the Blitz
something I know,
must be related to lightning,
to the undersides of clouds
tinged with fire. He leaves behind
his new Buick, celery-colored
with peek-a-boo holes
in its side, I, too, soon discarded
to my mother’s pale hand."
