Note from Carolyn:

Dear Subscribers and Authors' Coalition Members:

Some of you may remember my big HowToDoItFrugally.com fiasco. I now have a blog that I thought might substitute until I get the other one in shape. What do you think? Please go and comment. I need guidance from you, advice on how to polish it as well as comments. It is http://sharingwithwriters.blogspot.com/.

I'm keeping this short--it is holiday time. But I want you to know developing this blog was lots easier than doing a website with FrontPage! As if you didn't know!

Best,

Carolyn Howard-Johnson

POD Presses and Other Matters
In the continuing saga of the stumbling blocks (and advantages!) created by publishing on a POD press, ISBNs, creating POD printed best sellers and more. Copied to Carolyn from Chris Meeks.

Richard:

Re: Last Week's Letter-to-the-Editor

We do not disagree as much as you think. I did not mean to imply that iUniverse, Lulu and other POD companies do not offer the ability to print books with ISBNs and barcodes. They do, but those are an extra cost, and most people who go the POD route do not elect to get an ISBN. To give you a sense of what I mean, Lulu Press presently publishes over 1500 titles per week, and only about 5% of the titles get ISBN numbers, according to David Spain, who goes around the country promoting Lulu Press. This equals more than 78,000 titles per year, 3900 of which might have ISBNs and are available through Amazon.com. To get into Lulu's all-time top 100 bestsellers takes less than 300 sales.

In order for someone to order a book from a bookstore requires the book to have an ISBN. Bookstores will gladly order books this way for people, but bookstores are reluctant to stock POD titles because the bookstore cannot return the book if it doesn't sell. To take your delightful title as an example, how is someone going to find your book by browsing? People can't do that in a bookstore. They have to know your title and its contents to order it versus finding it by chance in a bookstore, lifting it up, reading the back cover, and opening the book to read the first page. Because your book has an ISBN, people might stumble upon it on Amazon, however. They might hear about it through your marketing efforts.

According to the New York Times in an article by Gayle Feldman, the average POD book title sells just 150 to 175 copies. Lulu's David Spain thinks it's really less than a hundred, and I've heard as low as fifty. This can disillusion an author, but, hey, you're up against the marketing arms of major companies. Print ads can cost thousands of dollars. Traveling around the country costs thousands more—and to what adoring lines of fans are you flying?

There are certainly people who are good at marketing--perhaps spurred on by Carolyn's delightful book--and they will be the exception to the above facts. I hope to be the exception to the above facts. I hope you are, too. I certainly don't hate POD, as I've embraced it. In fact, I have a new title appearing this month, "Who Lives?", a play that was produced in Los Angeles to great reviews. It's about the perfection of the kidney dialysis machine in the early sixties, and a hospital committee that had to choose the first dozen people to try it. They might live--so who gets to try it? Take a peak at it on Lulu or Amazon.com.

I write more about POD in a longer article at http://www.beyondchron.org/articles/Print_On_Demand_Books_3979.html.

Cheers,
Christopher Meeks

Tip: Recycle Out of Print Books for a Cause
Take the lead from Lynn Hutner Colwell. Tim Bete, director of the Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop (one of the nation's premier writers' conferences) says, "I met Lynn when I was creating the Erma Bombeck Online Museum. Lynn wrote the only authorized biography about Erma Bombeck and donated portions of the biography to the online museum. Lynn's book, Erma Bombeck: Writer and Humorist, is fantastic but unfortunately out-of-print. Lynn recently decided to turn the original hardcover book into an e-book and is donating all proceeds to the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop. You can support the workshop and read a great book all for just $8.75 at http://ErmaBook.HumorWriters.org To subscribe to the occasionally published Humor Writers newsletter go to http://homestead.sitetoolbox.com/app/newsltr/subscribe.html?no=255

Tip: A review site you may want to explore is http://www.booklore.co.uk/ Chrissi of the UK is editor. Perhaps you book could be next up. (-:

=======================================================
Please pass this letter on to others. Unlike many others, I do not mind if you use only portions of it as long as you credit the writers and include this subscribe information. "To subscribe to 'Sharing with Writers' send an e-mail to HoJoNews@aol.com with 'subscribe' in the subject line."

Tip: "Diane J. Newton, list mom and Publishingandpromoting (yahoogroups) says, "FYI: For an excellent head-to-head comparison of POD companies see, http://www.bookandtales.com. Clea Saal maintains the site in an unbiased manner and has my respect for doing so for zero compensation. She is a treasure and her site is a valuable resource for anyone looking for quick publication (if your book is accepted - reputable companies do exist.) and wide distribution. Costs there too vary wildly. There's a lot to be said for research. $400 vs several grand is a huge difference when, make no mistake, you'll be doing your own marketing in any case."

This is an example of the kind of info one can pick up on Di's list. It is an excellent e-group for learning more about publishing and promoting. Subscribe by going to this page and signing in: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/publishingandpromoting/

Submit a Column: Mad as Hell or Not

Dear Carolyn: I took your weekend seminar a few years back and having listened well I created my own website which launched 3 months ago.

It's called the Mad as Hell Club (www.madashellclub.net) and we are 30 essayists and 20 advice columnists who each publish a column once a month.

We also have a weekly guest column, a weekly high school column and a weekly college column.

If you or any of your past or present students are looking for a place to publish an essay about anything that is deeply felt, this is the place. We're open to submissions.

Our writers have had five books published and produced an award winning children's CD, and had a production at the Geffen Theatre in 2006. We include a syndicated columnist, magazine, TV and film writers. Two of our high school writers had their essays reprinted in the Palisadian Post this fall and my most recent column was also published in the Cleveland Free Times (http://www.freetimes.com/story/4490).

So if you like what you see, please spread the word.

You're right. Turns out the best way to spread the word is to up and do it yourself.
Best,
Dennis Danziger

PS: Another of your former students, Tom Frick, who is in charge of publications and the former LA Times art critic is also a regular columnist for MaHC).

Subscriber Contribution: Getting and Interpreting National Publishing Facts

In the 2003 US Census on establishments, employees and payroll by industry and employment size indicates our American world is on a fast track of change.

As a writer, have you ever thought there would come a time when there would not be paper to write on or a pencil or pen to write with? Will these old stand-by's' become obsolete as our world steams toward building a place of wired technology? Will we be forced to trade our simple creative writing toys in for hot wired plastic board toys? Will there come a day when we sit in our rocking recliners and hear our grand children discuss terms of the writing world of technology that sounds like something from Dr. Spock and Captain Kirk? I think the day has arrived.

Check out the following Internet pages to see how America's writing industry has evolved.
Click here: http://www.census.gov/prod/2005pubs/03cbp/cbp03-1.pdf Page 41, sec. 31-33 are the 2003 stats printed in 2005 for the manufacturing printing industry. Pg 45 printing ink industry (just after the toilet manufacturing stats, LOL, still making a place for crap). Pg 74 we are still making pencils! and other creative writing devices......pg 77 computer manufacturing far outweighs pencil manufacturing. Pg 86 books periodicals and newspapers... pg 87 wholesale electronic markets and agents far outweigh the printing industry.......pg 95 bookstores are still a place where we can enjoy something tangible! Well, at least we could in 2003.... pg 108 the world of information: book publishers to motion pictures. Pg 111 Internet publishing and broadcasting, indeed we have advanced to the virtual writing world...

Hot wired toys are indeed fun to play with, but I still can not get used to the fact that viewing the Internet feels something like looking through the store front window, with my nose plastered to the glass, staring at the assorted candies and not being able to touch or smell any of the displayed delicacies.
And so it goes.

June 10, 2004. Thank Yous:

(Note: Each thank you may be set with a jewel of a resource for you to plumb for your book. Watch for them! Adapt them to your own publishing and promotion needs!)

To Prill Boyle who just included in her blog the first person essay that I include in my media kit, "Life Begins at 60." It is an ideal way to see how a first person essay for YOUR kit might be written as well as a way to see an example of a well-planned blog--in this case one targeted to women because Prill's book is Defying Gravity: A Celebration of Late-Blooming Women.

Find the blog at http://defyinggravitynow.blogspot.com/2006/11/life-begins-at-sixty.html#links

And, I know you've heard this mantra before, it is to YOUR advantage not only to leave comments at blogs and elsewhere but to link them to your own website. It takes but a second. Using this method, your website can rise like a morning star on the Google horizon.

To Brian Hill and Dee Power, for including a wonderful endorsement of The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't, in their newsletter. To subscribe send an email to author@BrianHillAndDeePower.com with
"Subscribe" in the subject heading. You'll also find their Making of a Bestseller a fine companion to your copy of The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't. Find it at BrianHillAndDeePower.com.

To Beth Morrow and Cheryl Wright for a great review on Cheryl's Writer2Writer site. Beth is the able (and creative!) reviewer! See it at: http://www.writer2writer.com/frugal.htm. See if you don't think it is so unusual that it makes you want to learn more about the reviewer! If so, go to www.bethmorrow.com.

When was the last time you bought a book from an author you know? "Tracings" my new chapbook of poetry is available for that honor at www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599240173/qid=1141623936/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-4692447-2218401?s=books&v=glance&n=283155
but any book mentioned in any one of your "Sharing with Writers" newsletters would be a nice gesture. If all of us directed more of our reading to newer authors who write in genres we love or genres we need to stretch into, we would do ourselves and the publishing industry a great favor.

Metaphors and Similes to Make You Smile:

(Every year English teachers from across the country submit their collections of analogies and metaphors actually found in high school essays. I can't acknowledge the resource but I thought they might not mind if I published them one at a time. I also thought some of you might have some favorites you could contribute.)

Here is one of the teachers' favorites. Anyone who remembers the old story problems we were given at math time in grade school will appreciate this:

"He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a
real duck that was actually lame, maybe from stepping on a land mine or something."
