I was invited to talk to PEN USA's Emerging Voices fellows at Antioch University again this spring. That got me to thinking about encouraging you all--in this new year of 2007--to help other writers in some way. Or other readers, perhaps through literacy programs.

I enjoyed my experience so last year--talking to 20 or so people with a passion for writing. I got so much more from it than I gave.

And, then, as I write this, I'm thinking that there might be some SWW subscribers who would qualify as PEN scholars. At any rate, you might want to check the program out at www.penusa.org. The program is such a wonderful way to connect with the writing world--regardless of the side of the fence (student or teaching) you are on.

Jazzed About Blogging: Tips to Make One Work (Better) for You

Yeah for blogs! I wasn't crazy about them until recently. Now I know how much easier they are than building a website from scratch, I'm all over them. Sometimes the person who is new to an activity is in a better position to give even old-timers a fresh new take on a subject, so here goes:

--Consider using a blog like a regular website. A blog might be all a newbie author needs and the ones at blogspot.com give a writer lots of flexibility for links, lists, etc.
--Add flexibility by using HTML code from other sites. I've used some from Trumba.com, LibraryThing.com, and Amazon.com (my plog or AuthorConnect ™ there.
--Don't bury your book or the fact that you are an author. I'm thinking of replacing my picture with one of my book covers. Whatever you post in one position appears on the blogs of others when you leave comments. Think of the possibilities here!
--Provide links to pages where visitors can buy your book (s).
--Think tags and/or keywords. Put them in your title and consider them as you write your blogs.
--Use RSS feeds for subscriptions. I've tried a few. I may not even be doing it right, but the experts say to do it so I am. No results that I can see yet. Because of this, you can actually subscribe to my blog by going to it and filling out the little subscribe chicklet on the left side of the page. You can tell I'm getting web savvy because I know the term chicklet! Ha!
--Do virtual tours and leave your blog address as part of your comment. Contribute, don't just brag.
--Make a place to include the links of other blogs on your blog; be sure the blogs you add relate in some way to yours.
--I've mentioned Trumba.com in other newsletters. If you speak or do events this site will save you tons of work! I enter an event once and then wherever I paste the code, on my website, blog or anywhere else, that entry appears by Internet magic.
--I've also mentioned LibraryThing.com. I'm using it slightly differently than they intended but it's working for me quite well, thank you. Visit and see how it helps me focus on books I recommend. And those titles cycle--so there are different ones up all the time.
--And get this! (I'm so excited!) There are links there that take visitors directly to my So You'd Like to . . . .essays on Amazon. And the Listmanias there. And those can even be used as readers' guides for my UCLA students. Now isn't that fun?

Now, all I've got to do is get people to put out the word that my blog is there and keep adding to it. I delayed adding a new entry, though, because the first one seems like such a good introduction to new visitors but I finally gave in. So, if you go, please read both entries.

We all know we learn better if we have a visual. So, print this article out, go to my blog and use it as your real-live illustration. http://www.sharingwithwriters.blogspot.com. An Editorial

Book News That Affects You

LA Times business page is dishing the book dirt again (Jan 2, P. C1). David Streitfeld reports that Amazon may be gouging your customers by going the route of airlines -- when there's demand for a book, the price may go up. He even tested it on both Amazon and Amazon.UK.

He noticed because the price of a book he had put in his shopping cart went up in value before he got a chance to check out (from $11.02 to $11.53). He was suspicious so he ran a test by dropping an assortment books in his cart and watching the prices change. Many (not all) increased by about 5 percent. This was just before Christmas, mind you, a strong buying season.

So, no one likes prices to go up. I hate it when I pay $100 more for my hotel room than the guy on my floor with a better view, too, but I don't ruin my vacation by railing at management.

Still, this is interesting to us authors because we're in the book business and many of us have been curious about online bookstores' discounting and other pricing policies.

But before authors and consumers of books get into a snit -- probably about something they can't change anyway -- I'd like to remind everyone that in a capitalist economy, it is perfectly legal for retailers to price their own merchandise, as high or as low as they want.

Further, Amazon discounts as a matter of policy. (Brick and mortar bookstores aren't too crazy about that!) So, if they choose to raise prices from say a 30% discount, to a 25% discount, is that something we should start to write letters about?

I put this in a class with the other cause we authors get riled about -- the reselling of used books. Hey, it's the way things work in a free economy. You or your publisher may try to price your book as fairly as possible but you also price it to sell. You wouldn't have it any other way and, though you certainly may be tuned into your customers' needs, you wouldn't want your customers or the government interfering with your right to make your own decision. Amazon deserves no worse, even though they are a great, big guy that won't go broke if a book is priced 5 percent more or less. I, personally, have bigger pots of beans to stir, and I bet you do, too.
