A Rant on Libraries and Their Destiny

Dear Subscribers and Authors' Coalition Members:

And this is what libraries have come to! The director of the library system in Fairfax County, VA., is presiding over the destruction of books including classics like For Whom the Bell Tolls and To Kill a Mockingbird. Time magazine (Jan. 15, 2007) reports the Virginia library system they will destroy any book not checked in the last two years. Hey, this is just a windup. Read the real rant at www.sharingwithwriters.blogspot.com

If you care to share your outrage, please vent by clicking on the comments button. While you're there, please note the entry (yes, also a bit of a rant) just before that on that gives big publishers a bad time. (scroll down). It's also based on a Time magazine report. (There's a comment spot for you there, too!)

Lately I seem to be an equal-opportunity curmudgeon.

Best,

Carolyn Howard-Johnson

Tip: Promotion Tip: I ordered green and yellow-green M&Ms with FRUGAL EDITOR on one color candy and FRUGAL PROMOTER on the other for guests at our booth at the LA Times Book Fair. These colors are the prominent ones on my The Frugal Editor and of course, green is the color of the money you might save with some of the advice I give in my books. I may put the M&Ms in individual gift bags and/or glue them to a card for the event. Cute? I'm sending some to my 88 year old mom for Valentine's Day, too. They aren't cheap (or FRUGAL) but If you like the idea, go to mymms.com/vdaygift22 and get a free signature gift box with your order (whatever that is! Ha!).

=======================================================
Please pass this letter on to others. Unlike many others, I do not mind if you use only portions of it as long as you credit the writers and include this subscribe information. "To subscribe to 'Sharing with Writers' send an e-mail to HoJoNews@aol.com with 'subscribe' in the subject line."

Want Your Book Featured in Full-Color Yarnspinners and Wordweavers?
Want Your Book Featured in Full Color in this Very Newsletter?

Yarnspinners and Wordweavers will feature your book cover, a link to your site or an online bookstore, a blurb and more when you promote your book through the Authors' Coalition booth at the LA Times/UCLA Festival of Books. In addition to exposure at the fair to more than 130,000 visitors, or to 500 or more booksellers and press if you utilze the associated catalog, your book will appear in their all-fair issue in April at no additional charge.

Positions in the booth are limited (we want to do justice to each book!) so check it out at http://redenginepress.com/chjohnson. Which program would work for you? All of them? You don't have to be in Los Angeles to participate!

Oh! All participants qualify for consideration for a review in this newsletter during 2007, too. Or an interview. That's in addition to the AC website exposure you'll get. Check out the site that is being rebuilt after last year's success at: (http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com).

To subscribe to Y&W, send an e-mail with "subscribe" in the subject line to nate@redenginepress.com.

New members will help Authors' Coalition serve all its members better! Ask your writing friends to join at http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com. Opportunity:

Help with Marketing from Subscriber for F r ^ ^
From a subscriber.

My concept is called Hungry Dog Marketing. The term is simply a more visual and better way (I hope) for people to think of target and niche marketing. I will be offering e-books and reports to help people find their “hungry dogs” a.k.a. more receptive prospects, as well as personalized services.

One of those services is customized searches and I am looking for 2 readers to try it out once at no cost in exchange for feedback and testimonials.

The ideal candidate would be someone who is struggling with, or doesn’t have the interest in searching the internet for sites, magazines, newsletters etc. that already relate to their target audience. The issue might also be not having the time to do these tasks, even if there is an underlying interest and understanding.

Clients who utilize this service will receive 12 markets per search. I ultimately see this as a something some people will use once and others more often depending on their needs, time and effort saved etc.

I will be offering this service initially for $97 per search, so this is truly a frugal opportunity for someone.

Anyone who is interested in the fr** trial can contact me at Cheryl@brighterdaypublishing.com.

Author Successes

(You are invited to send me news about your successes. New books, awards and more. If you read about others' successes you'll not only be inspired, you'll glean resources for future successes of your own. Please get in the habit of using subject lines, though, that will not be interpreted as spam.)

Vicki M. Taylor entered the 21st century with two new book trailers for Not Without Anna and Trust in the Wind.

Editorializing Again

In the News: Stupidity Running Amuck

Big publishers are discovering that fun promotion works. I site two recent experiences that prove it. My friend, June Casagrande, pitched having bumper stickers that say Grammar Snobs Are Great Big Meanies made to her publisher (Penguin), and guess what! They did it.

Then, Time magazine ran an article (October 16, 2006) on how St. Martin's has taken to (my words) doing something more than running ads in the New York Times! The inspiration? Their author K'wan who wrote hip hop or street-lit like Gangsta.

So, "instead of signings at Barnes & Noble, St. Martins' is planning giveaway and readings in barber shops and beauty salons" . . . .ads on urban radio and an official Hood Rat mix tape CD.

Sorry, but if big publishers had spent less time ignoring (or dissing) independent authors and small presses, they'd have gotten the idea long ago. Two years ago the Authors' Coalition published a CD for our booth at the LA Times and, I guess you could say we got it because we're promotion-smart, too.

Last year at the same fair, Joyce Faulkner tested magnet signs for her rental SUV. We may offer those soon on the Authors' Coalition site even though results were hard to measure. We did get some action from the press as we were carrying our bookshelves and signs in from the loading dock. They knew they'd seen something a little unusual and possibly even smart. So the street-smart author Time cites, Relentless Aaron, wasn't the first to plaster his car with signs. Maybe something just got into the air and spread.

Tip: I love the airline's Skymall catalogs, don't you? When I was flying to New Orleans recently I found a great idea for people who write hot romance to use as promotion items or as launch favors. They are mini-Tabasco ©, bottles, really mini! But how much hot sauce do you need to get a sizzle going? Imprint them with your logo or book cover. Purchase them only by the case. Go to www.skymall.com or call 800-Skymall. Or Google Tabasco! Even that sounds naughty, doesn't it!

Children's Book Hits Amazon's Best Seller List for Large Print Books in 6 months!

(This article is important because it deals with a little utilized feature of Amazon, their best-sellers lists for specific categories. If your book fits into any of these specialized categories as Jewel's did for the Books in Large Print category, you can capitalize on that. Find it on the far left of the home page--scroll down!)

By Jewel Sample

When I saw the words "Best Sellers list for large print children's books" with my first book, Flying Hugs and Kisses on a Google search list the day after Christmas, I could not believe my eyes. I quickly clicked on the web link and to my amazement there it was, book cover and all on Amazon.com.

My very first book has only been out since April 2006 and on Amazon.com since June. Now, some of you are probably wondering how I did this. It has only been 6 months. I do not have a lot of money to hire someone to market and promote my book. I must admit for two years I have focused mostly on the grief recovery issues of small children and how I could help them through the grief process by writing a children's book. I am not a marketing person by career. I am only a grandmother by choice and a best selling author for large print children's books by divine intervention!

What I can share with you is, all I have done is follow the advice in a book called The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't written by a Carolyn Howard. Additionally, I have to say that I have followed the advice of my sweet supporting husband, family, friends, and the inner nudging's of the good Lord above.

Some of the things I learned from Howard-Johnson's practical book are to think outside the box and to tie different aspects of my book to potential buyers in creative ways. Most importantly, I had to accept Howard-Johnson’s notion that even if my publisher had all the money in the world, only I could promote my book with my personal life stories, my signature and my name.

Over the last year, I have accomplished several things that you can find out how to do in Carolyn’s book. I set up my homepage, wrote query letters, sent out book announcements, answered all my email from readers of my book, designed a tag signature for every correspondence and a thank you card with my book cover on the front for my book signings and special moments.

To be honest with you I have NO idea how Flying Hugs and Kisses received placement on Amazon’s Best Sellers list for large print children’s books. If there is anyone who can shed some light on how Amazon ratings work, I would really appreciate it. However, I LOVE the free publicity I am receiving. My publisher is featuring me in his January newsletter.

You can find my book by going to the following link by pasting the URL http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/books/301804/ref=pd_ts_pg_3/102-3099503-4165769?ie=UTF8&pg=3 Go there soon as the book list changes hourly and I am now number 66. I cannot promise it will be there in a few days.

Watch for my new website where I will publish extensive lists of resources for writers. It's a horror-in-progress right now but soon it will become a portal for writers.

E-Tips for E-Promotion:

Barter your writing--your reviews, your essays, your excerpts, your opinion pieces--for exposure (or for clips, if you're a new writer). It is a controversial practice to do it for free but getting your name out there is good branding and many sites that do a lot of good would not exist if they had to pay for content. So do a good deed and benefit, too. While you're at it, self-syndicate what you write. Each of your pieces can be recycled--sometimes exactly as you wrote them, sometimes with slight edits.
