Note from Carolyn:

My fellow AC Members and SWW Subscribers:

You are receiving this letter early this week. I will be out of town visiting a relative who has been living with a heart transplant longer than about any other human being. He will be 75, but about 15 with his new heart. I'm traveling to Florida for the party.

So, thank you to all of you have nominated this newsletter (and/or my website www.HowToDoItFrugally.com) for the Writer's Digest 101 Best awards. writersdig@fwpubs.com. Many of you have been very generous with your praise and the time it takes to write lovely nominations. For those who may have less time (or may be less enthusiastic!) Ha!) a short one sentence will be appreciated, too.

I think the most important thing I can share with you is my gratitude for each and every one of you! Sometimes something like this can remind one of how warm hearts can be.

Best,

Carolyn Howard-Johnson

Tip: I haven't used them but they were recommended by some members of one the e-groups I belong to for fast, quality service on printing bookmarks. Trouble is, I think it helps to already have a design made up. If you learn differently, let me know! https://secure.gfxinc.com/secure_forms/bookmarks.html If you don't have to pay a lot extra for setup, I think their prices looked reasonable, too.

Feature:
Cross-Promotion Equals Heavenly Results

You all know that I use the term cross-promotion a lot but I get the distinct feeling that some of you aren't understanding its power!

How do I know that? Because not enough of you have signed up for the CD that Authors' Coalition will be putting in the hands of 1,000 fair-goers in April.

But, you say, I won't be at the fair. Well, that's the beauty of some cross-promotion. It can sometimes work in your absence! Here's an Authors' Coalition member's take on it. Kathe Gogolewski's (author of the book Tato for children eight to 12 -- www.tri-studio.com ) says:

"If seven participating members of the CD project for the LA Fair [and we do have more participation than that right now!] burn 500 additional CDs each and pass them out at book fairs, conventions, speaking engagements and other related events, then an additional 3,500 CDs beyond the original 1,000 from the LA Book Fair will land in the hands of readers. Often, these CDs are passed around in homes and offices, so more people will see them than the original recipients.

It goes on! If fourteen members pass out 1,000 CDs at book events, that's an additional 14,000 CDs that move into people's hands, homes and offices. Authors are not limited to just one event, either. If each of these 14 authors passes out 1,000 CDs for two events, that's a total of 28,000 CDs. We have 15 authors currently participating in the CDs, so this is entirely possible, especially if everyone commits to doing their parts. This can reach the levels of exposure commensurate with a national campaign. Together, we are powerful!"

Now, I hear your arguments.

Argument #1: I don't know how to burn CDs so that I can continue to use the perk.
My Answer: We've figured that out. We've enlisted one hunk of a Texas guy who's retired who will do it for us the low price of $50 for 50 CDs. That's about what you'd pay for some of those souvenirs that I warn people are a waste of money because no one ever looks at the writing on a pen or remembers where a piece of candy came from! A CD has high perceived value, especially with the full-chapter excerpts, poems, and complete short stories that will be on it!

Argument #2: $200 is lots of money. Yep, but its money that can keep working all year long for you by burning more for your events and when others burn more for their events. And, get this! This year it includes a free test for a video -type slide show for you to put on a television every time you speak, every time you sign, every time you do any kind of event. So, you're getting two for one. Besides the video/slide perk, it includes the service of building your webpage for the CD.

Even if you don't think you'll ever use this program again, WE (meaning your Authors' Coalition directors and sponsors) will. We have several fairs coming up and I'll be speaking lots of places. And, yes, I'll take a TV with me for the slide show unless I'm flying! But oh, those CDs. They're light and don't take up much room. They'll go with me everywhere!

Argument #3: I've never heard of a promotion like this.
My Answer: Bingo. That means that if you write an article about the process and your participation in it, newsletters and websites might be interested. Maybe even your local paper. Maybe they've never heard about anything so tekky either! Cutting edge promotion is almost always the best promotion because it is news and because it has room to grow.

By the way, some of those 15 authors already participating in the CD are powerful promoters, people who give many talks each year. But even beginners can add much to the pool.

We want you there. I want you to learn more about the power of cross-promotion.

Kropotkin's Big Idea: Giving Away Your Work for Free

Writers seem to be in an endless debate about this thing they call giving away the fruits of their labors. The arguments go on indefinitely--flaring into bonfires occasionally--with some editors of major newsletters and sites advocating never giving anything away (because you'll never make any money if you do that--a fallacious argument by the way--or because you will be taking food out of the mouths of writers who must make a living at it).

Others think it's OK for beginners to give away their work in order to collect clips, as an example.

Then along comes Justin Fox** of Time Magazine (time-blog.com/curious_capitalist) who reminds us that Peter Kropotkin examined the idea long ago when he said people give away work (volunteerism for charity or for the good of the community as they do at Wiki.com*) for more than what he called reasons of "reckless individualism." He -- and now business models including the writing and internet communities -- are wondering how much people will give away free. By the way, Wikipedia calls this the "gift economy" and considering that term was probably given to them free by some economist with a knack for words, I think we should be grateful for the tendency among our species to give stuff away.

And that brings me to my argument in favor of giving away (more accurately, bartering) your work or some of it. In The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't, I use the example of giving away book reviews:

If you give away a review to a review website, as they give something back. Sometimes only a link to your site. Sometimes that and a byline. The smartest ones will also give you a tagline--a nice tagline full of your credentials. Why is that? Because they know that your credentials can only make them look that much more professional. Even major newspapers like the New York Times have figured that out. They include little infomercials on their writers (even the ones they've paid) so that readers know who they are, can reach them to comment. They also know that readers are influenced by credentials.

So, no matter which side of the give-away fence you put your little foot down on, giving away some of your material can be a smart move.

Now, just so there's no confusion here, giving away your writing or your time through interviews -- even interviews on TV or radio -- is, indeed, giving your talents away. But for a purpose. You know what they are. You're building clout. As those grow, you'll get higher fees for speaking, be able to sell your books easier, gain a little fame (which also sells books) and perhaps the most important, give you a wider audience for what you want to say. Which is, after all, why we write! There may be other reasons but I think wanting to share is one of the best!

A postscript here. Give away if you will. Judiciously, of course. But that's a long way from paying others to exploit you. Really. You can enlist people to review your book and interview you without paying someone to do that for you including Kirkus.

Fun Reading You'll Also Learn From

John Grisham's new book The Innocent Man isn't the fare he usually dishes out. It isn't fiction. It isn't courtroom and it isn't even the literary gem his A Painted House was.

Innocent is the real story of Ron Williamson, a man with the almost-makings of a great baseball player who couldn't get it together. His life doesn't fit the structure of a good John Grisham novel. The hero isn't a hero. He wasted away so much of his natural talent on alcohol and other weaknesses it is hard for a reader to like him. He isn’t exactly an anti-hero, either. His life certainly did not fit the pattern of a good arc for a novel. And the ending doesn't fit with Grisham's usual feel good stuff. Still, Grisham's chosen protagonist was innocent and America has always loved Underdog. Therefore, this biography might be the perfect read for writers who want to see how Grisham gets around these obvious drawbacks. And they might want to use him as an example of how important it is to take risks. Having said that, we all recognize that Grisham got a very good head start before he decided to offer up something brand new to the menacing world of publishing.

CHJ: An article in Time magazine (Oct. 16, 2006) on John Grisham's new book was inspiration for this little rill.

Searching for Charity

By Terry Doherty, Founder and President of www.TheReadingTub.com
Who Is Reading Your Book?
Be honest: you have Googled your own name to see who is writing about you and your book. Well, what if you could search your own name (or your book title)… and make a donation to charity at the same time? Now you can. With every search you launch from http://www.goodsearch.com/, 1 cent goes to the charity of your choice.
There are 30,000 charities listed through GoodSearch, and I am asking you to select one that's important to all of us as writers: a literacy site. Who will read your next book if we don't teach our kids to read? And I'm asking you to select this ReadingTub.com for just one week. Then you can opt for another charity ... if you don't see your writer's group, local library, or school, let them know about GoodSearch ... and keep searching for the Tub until they're set up.

Go to http://www.goodsearch.com/. and enter "Reading" in the Who Do You Search for? box. Scroll down and select "Reading Tub (Keswick, VA)." It's that simple: pick the charity and start searching the Internet using all of the power that a Yahoo! Search gives you.
Just think: 100 people, with just two searches a day for one week will bring in $140. That doesn't sound like much, but for a non-profit, it can be a lot. And for the Reading Tub® it is enough to start a program to get information to parents of kids who struggle with reading, but who may not regularly access the Internet. Who wouldn't want to help a parent help their child get ready for your next great book?
