Note from Carolyn:

My fellow AC Members and SWW Subscribers:

Authors' Coalition has a new sponsor. It is a web service launched three years ago by Marshall Turner to address the needs of writers. Marshall is the company's gracious CEO; between his knowledge of the worlds of business and internet, I know we all can learn much from him.
He says, "www.WebforAuthors.com is pleased to be a sponsor of Authors' Coalition as part of our outreach and author education efforts. [We want] authors to have effective, professional websites at a low price. By building in advanced features for content management, mailing lists, and to sell your work, WebforAuthors.com provides a system so easy to use that “if you can surf the internet you can build a website!”

For those who want an experienced company to create and manage their website, WebforAuthors offers affordable web design and site management. To find out more, visit http://www.webforauthors.com/ or contact Marshall at mturner@webforauthors.com.

Marshall plans to provide "Sharing with Writers" with web tips for authors very soon. I hope you'll all explore his site to see what he can do for you, especially those of you who don't have a site, are planning a new one or are tired of not having control of your existing site. And, of course, I hope you'll all search for his segment in this newsletter starting next week.

Best,

Letters-to-the-Editor

Dear Carolyn,

I know what it takes to compile and maintain media databases, and I'm suspicious of any organization that offers unlimited access to multiple databases for $49 a year.

They would need to have dozens, if not hundreds, of employees calling every single radio and TV station, newspaper, and magazine in the United States. People in PR use Bacon's, Burelle's, Corner Bar, my list of radio talk shows, and other sources. MondoTimes is almost never mentioned as a viable information provider.

I charge $329 for my list. My competitor charges $397. Given the constant turnover in the media, these lists are high maintenance. The fact that this company does not even list its address or phone number on its web sites also concerns me.

Dear Carolyn,

I finished reading This is the Place (http://www.carolynhowardjohnson.redenginepress.com/published_works_almanac.htm) yesterday, and it is excellent. Not only that, but it is important. I'm proud of you.

One of the Best Paths to Book Promotion

So how do you get the word out about you as an author and (secondarily--though many don't believe this!) about your book?
Use education as a driving force. It is not only an advantage to the writing and general communities, it also will serve your promotion campaign well. We have many subscribers on this list (Chris Meeks is a great example) who have done this effectively. Here is a short list of ways you can make a natural willingness to share with others work for you. The list is followed by a media release you can use as a template when you next put yourself out there to educate others. (-:

List:
 Present seminars on campuses. Utilize most colleges outreach programs like the UCLA's career program (see the media release pasted below).
 Teach classes: In the regular university system, community college systems or adult/extension systems.
 Utilize your library facilities and events programs.
 Tutor.
 Edit.
 Offer excerpts from your book. Offer it to instructors as a text. ! Many times ( if you think about it) your book could work as an teacher's aid for units on subjects like tolerance, gender equality, etc
 Serve as guest speaker for other instructors.

Editing Tip: Infinitesimal (note the spelling, too!) doesn't mean very small. It means endless.

=======================================================
Please pass this letter on to others. Unlike many others, I do not mind if you use only portions of it as long as you credit the writers and include this subscribe information. "To subscribe to 'Sharing with Writers' send an e-mail to HoJoNews@aol.com with 'subscribe' in the subject line."
====================================================

TIP: From Nadine Laman, author of Kathryn's Beach (www.nadinelamanbooks.com). Nadine puts ads in high school event programs. Here are the advantages she enumerates:
 Inexpensive
 For good causes
 Probably high readership.
 You know who your ad is reaching
 You can target your audience. As an example, if your book is about an athlete, use programs for athletic events.
 There will likely be no competition in the vehicle from other authors.

=======================================================
Last Call! You don't have to be present to benefit from the promotions associated with LA Times/UCLA Festival of Books! Here are the perks for participants Authors' Coalition's booth in the LA Times/UCLA Festival of Books:

 Yarnspinners and Wordweavers will feature an ad for your book.
 You will qualify for an interview or a review in Yarnspinners and Wordweavers.
 Authors' Coalition will run a year-long ad on their site.
 You automatically become a paid member to Authors' Coalition entitling you all the members' perks including a review on the AC site, participation in the AC bookstore, and more.

You can participate in some way whether you can be in Los Angeles for the fair or not. When you do you will get exposure at the fair to more than 130,000 visitors. If you participate in the catalog more than 500 or more booksellers and press will see your book

Rant: Taking Advantage of Authors

Unfortunately, we authors all look as if we just feel off the tail end of a donkey cart. Once an American merchant in Acapulco told me I had "creampuff" written on my forehead so, obviously--though I've been around the publishing track a few times--I'm can be as gullible as you or that new author publishing for the first time around. But those few treks around the track put me in a position to warn you and I'm not feeling like mincing words.

Because I'm so ticked off, I'm going to leave out the name of an offending bookstore because I don’t like slash and burn tactics. I suspect their heart is in what they are doing. Still, when I see an ethical lapse--intentional or not--no more creampuff. Here comes Napoleon.

At first I was pleased that there was going to be a new bookstore out there that welcomed all authors. You know, someone who judges a book by its contents, not its cover or the press it's printed on. The concept was so novel it got a write up in the LA Times even though the bookstore is in New York.

The story noted that this bookstore even had a patio at the back where they would welcome new self- and subsidy-published authors. OK. In New York that patio is going to be used (comfortably) possibly 30 days out of the year but that's another story.

I'm going to be in New York for BEA so I asked Star Publishing's marketer extraordinaire to set something up for me. You may know Janet Elaine Smith. She places books in bookstores and arranges for events for Star authors who pay an additional fee for the service. So, this new bookstore was a new opportunity, right? This is what she found out: (Go to my blog at www.sharingwithwriters.blogspot.com for the rest of this article and a few more ways to avoid scams).

Author Successes

(You are invited to send me news about your successes. New books, awards and more. If you read about others' successes you'll not only be inspired, you'll glean resources for future successes of your own. Please get in the habit of using subject lines, though, that will not be interpreted as spam.)

None to report this week. Make me ad that some of you are missing this opportunity! because I KNOW there must be some great news out there

====================================
Fun and F r * *: If you purchased Promoter in the past, I'd love for you to review it on Amazon or BN.com. Make it simple; just tell what part of it you found most valuable. If you do, send me the review link (URL) and I will send you an excerpt from my soon-to-be-released The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success that includes some sidebars from the book that will help you with some tricky grammar. As a thank you, of course. HoJoNews@aol.com, the Frugal Book
==========================================

Tip: Do you know how to let Google trace the links to your website so that when your name or your book's title is mentioned on other people's sites or blogs you'll know about it? If not, go to www.google.com/accounts. Sign in if necessary. Scroll to one of the last links that says "Alerts." Follow the directions. When you type in your name or book's title, put quotations around it so that you won't get a notice of every separate word in your name or title. If I didn't do this, as an example, I'd get alerts every time Howard Johnson hotels were mentioned. That could overwhelm my mailbox. You'll want to pinpoint the exact information that will help you analyze which of your online promotion efforts are helping you.
