Note from Carolyn:

My fellow AC Members and SWW Subscribers:

Even though many of you are fiction writers, let's talk indexing, or at least backmatter!

Indexes, like all of publishing, is something that publishers tend to give short-shrift today and writers who do not hail straight from academia may not give them a second thought.

Backmatter in any kind of book can be extremely valuable to the author, his or her book, and his or her future books but most books don't give it a sideways glance.

Indexing is a subject that could take a full book to explain and, if you have a nonfiction book coming out you should get one to read. In fact, my editor Trudy McMurrin and I may collaborate on one but that may take a full year (and may never happen! LOL). You may need your information now.

I do talk about indexing in The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success though and about backmatter.

You know how many publishers leave several white pages at the back of a book? Pure waste! Think of what they could be doing for you! Information on your other projects, a nice biography, a study guide, useful appendixes, and, YES! a healthy index that will let your nonfiction readers get around your book, make your book a desktop staple.

If your book is nonfiction consider the paperback version of Lisa See's Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. She has so much research in it and her backmatter reflects that. Having said that, I'd love to have an index for that book, too! For when I want to go back to absorb the research she has done (however fictionalized!) on laotung (other same in Chinese) for the chapbook of poetry on the Chinese women's language called nu shu I'm writing. Why is her research any less important or useful than research done by a nonfiction writer? It isn't. And now that many of us writers have more control over our books, well, why not?

That leads me to a coming issue of Sharing with Writers. I will be following up on the popularity of the last (and first!) all-tips issue. This one will be heavy on some of the stuff I learned in writing The Frugal Editor (do we ever stop learning? I hope not!), including indexing but a whole lot more.

I hope you'll watch for it. How about you each tell one (or more) of your writing friends that it is coming and suggest that they subscribe. All they have to do is send an e-mail to HoJoNews@aol.com with "subscribe" in the subject line. Easy!

Best,

Carolyn Howard-Johnson

Letters-to-the-Editor

Dear Carolyn,
Regarding this quotation from your last newsletter: "I know what it takes to compile and maintain media databases, and I'm suspicious of any organization that offers unlimited access to multiple databases for $49 a year...."

I think it might be important to clear up that the organization I cited last week doesn't claim to have personal references, just a very, very general list one can use. That is, not an actual up-to- date media database so much as just a general check-list of media in different areas. The same general list could probably be gathered if one had the time, just scanning through different media contact emails. But sometimes, feeling rushed, I just don't, so this helped me. But, again, it makes no claim for a detailed database.

I apologize if that was misrepresented by my post. Perhaps I chose my words poorly in representing it. I find it time-so consuming to dig up all the newspapers and radio shows and TV shows and getting their general email addresses, so the $49 was simply a time-saver for me. I don't advocate it or endorse it for anyone else since I have no experience and that would be presumptuous of me, I think.
Leora Skolkin Smith, author of Edges

(Editor's Note: Many--in fact most--of the tips and ideas in "Sharing with Writers" are simply the sharing of what works well for one with other authors. A difference of opinions alerts us all to be cautious to choose for ourselves. Please, everyone! Continue to share what you know. It isn't presumptuous to let people know what has been beneficial to your writing and/or your promotion campaign.)
-----
Dear Carolyn:

[Speaking of your rant], You (r subscribers) can go to http://www.newslink.org/ and find a list of radio stations . . . . It is divided by states, the type of station it is (talk, music, general, etc.) and you even get a bonus of TV stations (divided the same way) and newspapers (both daily and weekly). And you don't have to pay a cent for it!

What Subscribers Are Up To

Subscriber Jewel Sample sent me the link to her blog on Oprah. It's been a long time since we've talked about Oprah so I thought I'd send it along and I'm including my answer to Jewel (a copy of what I posted in comments on her blog) and, you'll find a link to the Oprah-worthy-quiz on her blog when you go there! (-: Here it is:

Is Gramma Worthy of Being On Oprah?
With all the recent chatter in the back of my mind, about how I should try to get on the Oprah show. I came upon Meg La Borde Phenix’s blog about how Oprah’s show is considered “the pie in the sky media hit and that most authors are not appropriate for the show.” Phenix’s blog has a free quiz that is really thought provoking and leads this Gramma to think it is time for a reality check. Read the rest of the blog here: http://jewelsamples.blogspot.com/2007/03/is-gramma-worthy-of-being-on-oprah.html

From Carolyn's blog comment:

Dear Gramma Jewel;

That's what I've been saying all along! Bookstores aren't the best place to sell books and Oprah isn't the only TV show in town. Yes, I'd love to be on Oprah. My first book was perfect. This Is the Place is a literary novel. It's about a woman. It's about a minority woman. It's about a repressed minority woman. It's about a little-known culture within the US (this time not the South!) and it met with early acclaim. Still nothing.

I can't help but imagine what the office where Oprah's readers work looks like. Think of them, overworked! Think of them young and wanting to please her and maybe not willing to take a chance on presenting her with something by an unknown! Think of the sheer numbers of books piling, up and up and up!

So, don't feel bad, Jewel. The potholes I fell into promoting This Is the Place and my other books were what led me to write THE FRUGAL BOOK PROMOTER and THE FRUGAL EDITOR. And This Is the Place did win a few awards. So, Oprah or not, it hasn't died a dismal death, and is still available (Amazon and B&N.com) to those who want what Oprah should have wanted all along. (-:

Best to you,
Carolyn Howard-Johnson

A New Take on the Business Card or Promotion for the Faint-Hearted
Authors either love marketing or hate it. The mention of a book event or a gathering of a crowd, even the captive audience at the Dept of Motor Vehicles waiting area, makes their heart beat faster. For other authors the idea of marketing raises their blood pressure. I'm part of the second group. The thought of marketing or even writing about marketing nearly causes an out break of hives. I'm kidding, of course, but just barely.

In 2005, I discovered the Biz Card. It is a digital business card made on a rectangle mini CD. It was love at first sight. The Phoenix Company, 5-Pints Productions, holds the patent for compression technology to pack virtual tours, flash pages, web pages, clips from speaking engagements, and probably anything that can be digitalized into a mini CD. While all the bells and whistles of many other promotions were outside my marketing budget, I saw the biz card as a way to put marketing material into the hands of my targets. I think these rate high in the "coolness factor" and people will be less likely to toss them in the trash.

Here is what I did:

1. Using my photos of the setting for my trilogy and original music, I made a video using Windows Movie Maker. The software was on my computer, so there were no additional costs involved.

2. I tested the video on my website and on YouTube (TM). The positive response was immediate. People noticed the video on my website. Hits on my website from YouTube (TM) showed up on my website stats. One person told me she bought my books because of the video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu6f_4ab0uk

3. Justin Clegg at 5-Pints Productions, jclegg@5pints.net , took my video and converted it into flash and created an intro splash screen. He used my book covers, short bio, contact info and a photo and cup of coffee to depict elements that are representative of me and of my books. The links to my website and to email me are active on my intro page, which makes it easy for people to follow through to my website. We designed the art for the label and I had biz cards in less than two weeks.

4. My digital business card campaign is in two parts. Obviously, one is putting the biz card directly into the hands of people. The other is a mail campaign. For the mail campaign, I bought tri-fold brochure blanks at the office supply store. On the front I used a mast that I have branded across my marketing campaigns, a pitch, and an explanation of how to operate the biz card. One point that is important is to tell the recipient that the biz card WILL NOT load anything onto their computer when they play it in their computer CD player. The plastic card cover is rubber cemented to the brochure stock making it easily removable, but fixed in place until then.

5. The brochure is designed to get people to look at my biz card. The video on my biz card is designed to sell my books. On the back of my brochure is my sell sheet for my books. See and example here: http://nadinelamanbooks.com/pdf/sellsheet1.pdf

6. For the hands on contact, the biz card can be handed out at any book event that draws readers, or individually to close a sale when you don't have a book on you to put in their hands.

The biz card is less likely to find its way to the trash than a bookmark or other paper promo materials. Because it's new, I expect some people to show their friends, something that adds another potential reader to the equation.

There is room to expand my biz card in the future without having to start from scratch next time. For my "next generation" of biz cards I plan to add the final book. With that, we will have excerpts of each book by simply clicking on each cover. We haven't begun to tap the recourses of this little device. The first ten people to email me and mention this newsletter can have a biz card. NadineLaman@aol.com

Nadine Laman is the author of Kathryn's Beach, High Tide and Atonement, a contemporary women's lit trilogy set in Los Angeles. http://www.nadinelamanbooks.com/

(Editor's Note: Biz Cards are similar to the Authors' Coalition's CDs except that they aren't cross promotional and they are handier because they are smaller. They are zooty to look at but they do lack the added advantage of having other people hand them out (unless of course, you could work out a way to coop with someone!)

If you enjoy "Sharing with Writers" please nominate it for Writer's Digest's 101 Best Newsletters for Writers. We aren't big, we aren't old. So it would take a huge outpouring from subscribers to make a dent. Send an e-mail to writersdig@fwpubs.com with subject line, "101 Best Newsletters for Authors" and let them know what this newsletter does for you!
======================================================

Thank Yous

(There are leads here, just as you'll find in all the most innocent-looking areas of this newsletter. You never know when you'll find a name or a site that will help you network or write better!)

To Lea Schizas, editor of the Muse Marquee http://themusemarquee.tripod.com/. Her March issue has been published. It includes my review for authors of the helpful book Artistic Anatomy
By Dr. Paul Richer, translated and Edited by Robert Beverly Hale at http://themusemarquee.tripod.com/id233.html The Muse Marquee home page includes my article on how to avoid paying someone to get radio gigs for you. Subscribe to this e-zine on the home page as well!

To Sassy Brit who blogged about the career day panel at UCLA I will serve on. Join her group. She may be one of the most supportive of list moms out there! Go to: http://tjbook-list.blogspot.com/2007/03/477-author-and-consultant-helps-ucla.html
-----
To Scott Flora and Kate Duebert for publishing "Star Publish Promotes Author Partnerships and Bookstore Sales," in their March issue of the SPAN Connection. Most of you know that my Frugal Book Promoter was published by Star and I am pleased to shout it out (and write articles of course!) to everyone that they have one of the most forward looking co-op marketing programs among subsidy publishers. The program is headed by marketing expert (especially bookstore marketing expert) Janet Elaine Smith. Kristie Leigh Maguire is publisher of Star Publish. If you want to check out SPAN (I highly recommend you do!) and get a sample copy of this last edition of their letter, contact Kate at kate@spannet.org; tell her you'd like to see their newsletter and more info on joining up. This issue also includes information on developing a platform (something I tend to rave on and on about in my classes!), and article on how to approach agents effectively and their ever-popular "News You Can Use" feature.
-----
To The Great Editors at WOW, Angela, Beryl and Annette: They are featuring my book signing at BEA at http://www.wow-womenonwriting.com/blog.html. What I'd like you all to notice -- especially those who have a newsletter or plan to have one -- is how they take a media release and make it into new, fresh, personal news!

Editing Tip:

Do not use a comma after a business name that uses LTD in the title. Style books differ on this, but usually many say the rule doesn't apply when Inc. is used in the name of a business.

=======================================================
No part of this newsletter is paid advertising. If you would like to advertise to subscribers, display ads are available at www.howtodoitfrugally.com (see the advertising tab at the top of the page) or at www.authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com.
========================================================

Editing Tip: Factoid means the opposite of fact. It is a piece of information that is presented in the press (or elsewhere, perhaps?) as a fact but, in fact, is false. That so many people misuse it as a cute synonym for fact, doesn't make it right, though some say those who use factoid incorrectly may win the fact/factoid battle. When that happens we will have lost a useful word for which we have no viable replacement

=======================================================
Please pass this letter on to others. Unlike many others, I do not mind if you use only portions of it as long as you credit the writers and include this subscribe information. "To subscribe to 'Sharing with Writers' send an e-mail to HoJoNews@aol.com with 'subscribe' in the subject line."
========================================================

TIP: Those who don't know how to create .pdf files from the files on their computer can learn how at createpdf.adobe.com. It's something to try for a short while to see if you need it, or want it (which you will if you're building a website!). It's a short-lived free offer, though, so prepare what you want in advance just in case you decide not to purchase service.

======================================================
We have room because of a cancellation for one more DC participant for the LA Fair. You don't have to be present to benefit from the promotions associated with LA Times/UCLA Festival of Books! Here are the perks for participants Authors' Coalition's booth in the LA Times/UCLA Festival of Books:

 Yarnspinners and Wordweavers will feature an ad for your book.
 You will qualify for an interview or a review in Yarnspinners and Wordweavers.

New members will help Authors' Coalition serve all its members better! Ask your writing friends to join at http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com. Paid members get a favorite review posted, consideration for an interview or review in Yarnspinners and Wordweavers. Membership is reasonable, too. We're even planning a speakers' bureau.

Tell friends to visit our blog. There they'll learn how to spark generally insipid book fairs by using value-added promotions: http://redenginepress.com/chjohnson .
http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com
======================================================

Tip: If you will permit me a sort of philosophical tip: Expectations can get in the way of learning and enjoying. Take time, a few moments, hours, days to learn something new about your craft, your career. Go to a conference, teleseminar, whatever, with the idea that if you learn one new thing, it will have been worthwhile. You will find -- as you travel the publishing path -- you learn less new stuff each time you allow yourself this luxury, but you'll enjoy it more. Perhaps, as you become more knowledgeable, you'll build sturdier stones upon the bricks you have already laid, share more of what you know with others, network more, feel less frustrated. All those are valuable. But you'll also nearly always find (I've never been disappointed in the search!) at least one new actionable piece of information that can make a difference to you.

Author Successes

(You are invited to send me news about your successes. New books, awards and more. If you read about others' successes you'll not only be inspired, you'll glean resources for future successes of your own. Please get in the habit of using subject lines, though, that will not be interpreted as spam.)

The success listed below is an example of how you can make waves (and bring your book along in the wake) outside of the traditional reviews and signings.

Dallas Woodburn had a story accepted for publication in Writer's Digest and a second story accepted by the literary magazine Cicada. She also won second place in the Ventura County Writers Club Short Story Contest for her story "New Names and Old Brisket" and was elected president of the Undergraduate Society of English Majors at the University of Southern California (USC), where she is a sophomore. Visit Dallas's website at http://writeon.zest.net/. By the way, if we could can Dallas's enthusiasm and spill it around where writers hang out, we'd all end up being bestsellers!

Work BEA the Frugal Way

Here is a quick baker's dozen of cheap ways to work BEA (www.bookexpoamerica.com) and lots of other conferences and tradeshows:

1. Consider NOT getting a "table" (I hate the term because that's what too many authors do, they come, bring books at sit down at the table supplied by the show director) or booth of your own.

2. If you really want to sign, utilize a cross-promotional effort sponsored by the likes of Span (www.spannet.org), Book Publicists of Southern California, your distributor, your publisher or Authors' Coalition (www.authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com). Not all organizations have a presence at every show.
