Note from Carolyn:
Dear Writers;
This is your second annual All-Tips edition of your "Sharing with Writers." Actually, it has turned into a bi-annual one because I got so much positive feedback on the first one. I hope you'll pass this edition on to other writers and ask them to subscribe. We are getting so big and strong and if each of you found just one more member, we'd triple our size. (You can tell how mathematically challenged I am! (-: Or maybe I'm just super-optimistic! )
This tips edition is a bit early. This is the big LA Times Festival of Books weekend so sending it out Saturday will be impossible. Hope the weather stays sunny! It's in the 80s today!

Subscribers who have websites or newsletters of their own may be interested in the Free Articles 4 Readers and Writers on my site, www.howtodoitfrugally.com. I add new articles to it each week. If you don't see what you need, just ask. HoJoNews@aol.com.

Tip: If you are the author of a single book and would like a gift-with-purchase to use to sell more books, go to www.redenginepress.com. That's what our The Complete Writer's Journal was meant to do for you when purchased in quantity. If you are just looking for a journal for your own scribblings, go to Amazon at:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0974375896/ref=cm_arms_pdp_dp/002-3692730-7456014
===========================================
Subscribers who are editors of their own sites, blogs, or newsletters can find content on a variety of subjects at my site on the "Articles 4 Editors and Readers" page. You'll find the tab at the top of the www.howtoditfrually.com homepage. Each article is at no charge and I am trying to add to the collection weekly.
============================================
Tip:
The difference is you. You are what you should be promoting (at least most of the time), not your book title. And here's Wordpreneur's take on how it is YOU that should be the focus to your articles, too. http://www.wordpreneur.com/archives/204
_________________________________
This Issue's Featured Tip: Want to use your Amazon page as a link? You don't need lines and lines of numbers. The URL for my book of poetry looks like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599240173/ref=cm_arms_pdp_dp/002-3692730-7456014
But you can get to it by clipping everything after the ISBN so it looks like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599240173/. That's a real advantage when you're trying to promote and your space is limited

Tip: Be sure to link your blog to your website and vice versa. Be sure to utilize links to other blogs related to yours and ask others to that for you. If you would like a sample of how that's done, go to my blog at www.sharingwithwriters.blogspot.com. Scroll down to the many links near the bottom of the blog page. And, if your blog is about writing in any way, I'd be pleased to trade links. (-:

Tip: From Nadine Laman
http://www.nadinelamanbooks.com/:
"Increase in shipping out of US: To ship one Katherine's Beach to the UK is $14.00 currently via air/global priority. My book retails at $15.95. Do the math for shipping a signed copy. Here is the URL for more information:

In your promotion for overseas shipping, offer signed book labels rather than signed copies. Or, use "Plus Shipping" for all your offers.

Tip: From Epstein LaRue, RN, BS, Travel Nurse and author of Highway Hypodermics (www.epsteinlarue.com/HH2007.htm). " ... it's getting to May/June and colleges/high schools are graduating. Now would be the best time to look at doing pregraduation and 'look what you can do after college' speeches!" Check with college Career Development departments.

Tip: Researching agents? Use Amazon's search engine. Enter the agent's name in their search engine and many of the books that they represented will appear -- near magically -- for you. Of course, only the books of those authors who bothered to thank their agents in their acknowledgments appear, but it will still give you a darn good idea of how busy an agent has been. This tip comes from Charlotte Reznick, one of the students in the last class I taught at UCLA.
_______________________________________________
Tip: I'm on a big indexing roll. I can't tell you how long it took me to get charged up about it. (I can't tell because I'm embarrassed and the months are too many to count--make that years!) I must credit Joyce Faulkner (www.joycefaulkner.com) with nudging me to understand its importance and then the longtime and brilliant university press editor Trudy McMurrin (trudyedit@yahoo.com) who is editing my The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success for bringing me around and teaching me even more. So, here's your tip. Start learning indexing now by listening to the Audio Divas audio on the subject. It is published by Double Dragon Press.
http://www.double-dragon-ebooks.com/single.php?ISBN=DDPAUDIO00003By the way, some well-known publishers have started including indexes with some kinds of fiction like historical fiction and fiction that requires lots of research.

If you enjoy "Sharing with Writers" please nominate it for Writer's Digest's 101 Best Newsletters for Writers. We aren't big, we aren't old. So it would take a huge outpouring from subscribers to make a dent. Send an e-mail to writersdig@fwpubs.com with subject line, "101 Best Newsletters for Authors" and let them know what this newsletter does for you!
==================================================
Tip: Snag yourself a list of media release disseminators who do it f r * *. You'll find one on my site www.HowToDoItFrugally.com. Click on the Resources for Writers tab at the top of the page. Scroll down. I've even given each my own personal min-review! Did you know that your release posted on one of these disseminators will make it to a higher position on Google searches than releases done about any other way?

Editing Tip:
Do not use a comma after a business name that uses LTD in the title. Do use a comma after a business name when Inc is part of the name. (Style books differ on this, but this rule is generally accepted.)
=====================================================
No part of this newsletter is paid advertising. If you would like to advertise to subscribers, display ads are available at www.howtodoitfrugally.com (see the advertising tab at the top of the homepage) or at www.authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com.

Tip: Actually 12 tips! These tell you how to make life easier on editors and thus increase you chances for free publicity. Go to Sassy Brit's blog, http://tjbook-list.blogspot.com/2007/04/515-twelve-tales-of-woe-from-busy-and.html. Another tip: While you're there sign up for her newsletter and get involved. Tip: Searching for an agent? You will love Bill Martin and Beverly Swerling Martin's newsletter. To subscribe to the AR&E free e-mail newsletter, send your details to them at info@agentresearch.com with the word Newsletter in the subject line. You can also use this couple's search for info on a given agent. Go to: http://www.agentresearch.com/news.html.
Thanks to Nadine Laman, author of Katherine's Beach for sending me their most recent newsletter. It was full of encouragement, no-nos and sound advice.

Editing Tip: Factoid means the opposite of fact. It is a piece of information that is presented in the press (or elsewhere, perhaps?) as a fact but, in fact, is false. That so many people misuse it as a cute synonym for fact doesn't make it right. Though some say those who use factoid incorrectly may win the fact/factoid battle. When that happens we will have lost a useful word for which we have no viable replacement
=======================================================
Please pass this letter on to others. Unlike many others, I do not mind if you use only portions of it as long as you credit the writers and include this subscribe information. "To subscribe to 'Sharing with Writers' send an e-mail to HoJoNews@aol.com with 'subscribe' in the subject line."
==============================
Tip: From The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success (Red Engine Press):
Turn unwieldy and, many believe, unattractive adverbs to metaphor gold. In a sentence like "She ran quickly," you determine that the adverb is redundant. Running, by its nature, is quick. But you still want more than quick. Ask yourself, "quickly as what?" This kind of edit can open doors for better imagery (either a metaphor or simile) that will give your reader a visual or other sensory experience. It can also suggest possibilities for humor -- something that may be welcomed by agents or publishers skimming query letters or dull proposals -- as well as editors seeking great manuscripts with sensory appeal.
PS: The Frugal Editor is now available for pre-orders on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0978515870/ref=cm_arms_pdp_dp/002-3692730-7456014.

TIP: From Carol White (www.roadtripdream.com ) who saw a recent tip on creating .pdf files free on a site. She says "As to your tip on pdfs. Take a look at www.pdf995.com - always free, always
perfect! Doesn't time out, but they display an advertisement of theirs for their paid products on your e-mail screen while the pdf is being created. A little annoying, but not enough to make me go for their paid version yet! I only do a few a month..."

Tip: If you will permit me a sort of philosophical tip: Expectations can get in the way of learning and enjoying. Take time, a few moments, hours, days to learn something new about your craft, your career and go with the idea that if you learn one new thing, it will have been worthwhile. You will find -- as you travel the publishing path--you learn less new stuff each time you allow yourself this luxury, but you'll enjoy it more. Perhaps, as you become more knowledgeable, you'll build sturdier stones upon the bricks you have already laid, share more of what you know with others, network more, feel less frustrated. All those are valuable. But you'll also nearly always find (I've never been disappointed in the search!) at least one new actionable piece of information that can make a difference to you.

Tip: Sent by Allyn Evans, author of Grab the Queenpower: Live Your Best Life (www.queenpower.com ) "I am reading Suze Orman's latest book for women (Women & Money) and throughout the book she directs people to her website for a tipsheet or additional information. This is a GREAT idea for how-to books."

Tip: What do you do when you get a media release from someone? Ditch it? Answer it? Utilize it for your blog? For your website? For an essay? All of the above answers are good except the first one. To see how Angela of Women on Writing utilizes media releases to make friends go to http://www.wow-womenonwriting.com/blog.html. She has a couple of mine up, the latest on UCLA's career week, but notice how she takes straight news and conversations it up! Make media releases work for you by making them personal personal. And in doing so, Angela makes her audience feel personally involved.

Fun and F r * *: If you purchased Promoter in the past, I'd love for you to review it on Amazon or BN.com. Make it simple; just tell what part of it you found most valuable. If you do, send me the review link (URL) and I will send you an excerpt from my soon-to-be-released The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success that includes some sidebars from the book that will help you with some tricky grammar. As a thank you, of course. HoJoNews@aol.com, the Frugal Book

Tip: Because agents and agents' needs vary so widely, to list them individually seems futile. Endorsement:
"www.HowToDoItFrugally.com , by Carolyn Howard--Johnson [is] a top website for writers . . . I'd say my ROI is over 1,000%. The advice is particularly strong in addressing the new author where they are in learning the publishing/selling process. Very practical. The site is excellent." ~ Hill Kemp, author of Capitol Offense, http://www.capitoloffense.com/, and contributor to Secrets, Fact or Fiction? I, ISBN 0-9737282-5-6 and Secrets, Fact or Fiction? II, ISBN 1-59594-062-6, LOC 2006904627, http://www.secretsfactorfiction.com
==================================================
Tip: .On a Spirited Woman Circle teleconference, Agent Lisa Hagan (www.paraview.com) reminded authors that the worst thing they can do in a query letter is start it with something negative like "You probably won't read this anyway."

Tip: www.Dictionary.com will deliver a word a say to your e-mail box. I love it. I skip over most of them but occasionally I find a word I don't know or one that looks as if I need it. Today's was glair. They define it as "egg white or similar slimy substance." The adjective is glaireous. Now a poet can hardly do without that word!

Journaling Tip: Find a dialogue that discusses how journaling can help both nonfiction and fiction writers on the F r ^ ^ articles page on my site. http://www.carolynhowardjohnson.redenginepress.com/free_content.htm
Scroll down to the journaling section for a dialogue between Erica Miner and me. She asks and I tell her how a journal helped me make my novel This Is the Place, more realistic in terms of scenes, settings and dialogue.
Keep in mind articles on that page are available for you to use in newsletters, handouts, whatever, at no cost.

Tip: Nancy Mills's Spirited Woman Circle features monthly teleconferences with authors and industry professionals who can make a difference to your career. Learn more about them at www.thespiritedwoman.com.

Tip: Joan Stewart's F*R*E*E "89 Ways to Write Powerful Press Releases" tutorial is at http://www.publicityhound.com/pressreleasetips/art.htm. Although the Frugal Book Promoter has a step-by-step directions for writing a media release (and samples in the appendix), it never hurts to get
someone else's take on a subject and we can probably learn one new little twist. However, please call them media releases. Joan probably uses the term press releases so the novice can find her paper when they Google on the first term they might use. Media release lets the media (all of the media) know you are a professional. Use it in your subject line when you e-mail and at the top of your hardcopy release when you mail by USPS.
====================================================
Reciprocal Links: Many subscribers are in a position to cross-promote. Let me know if you would like to trade some recommendation or promotion for a place on my Resources for Writers or Resources for Readers pages on www.HowToDoItFrugally.com.
=====================================================
Tip: Audios of BEA speeches are available at www.bookespocast.com. Information on audios that will teach you everything from winning and utilizing contests to how to better use Boolean Logic for your research are available at: http://tri-studio.com/AUDIOCLASSESALL.html. Each is complete with a link for the audio's purchase.
==============================================
When was the last time you bought a book from an author you know? Tracings, my new chapbook of poetry is available for that honor at www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599240173/qid=1141623936/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-4692447-2218401?s=books&v=glance&n=283155
but any book mentioned in any one of your Sharing with Writers newsletters would be a nice gesture. If all of us directed more of our reading to newer authors who write in genres we love or genres we need to stretch into, we would do ourselves and the publishing industry a great favor.
===============================
Tip: Did you know that Amazon gives you a gift of sorts every time someone buys your book? A couple weeks after the fact, Amazon sends him or her an invitation to review it complete with a link back to your book's page to make it easy for your reader to become a reviewer. (Of course, it does no good if you've purchased the book as a gift.) Now, here's the tip. Don't depend on this prompt. Ask people to review your book. You want at least a few reviews on your book's Amazon page and I've read studies that show that after a review has been posted, sales increase.

One Editing Tip,
Two Different Takes:
Karina Fabian (http://www.fabianspace.com/) asks, "Do you talk about reading backwards in order to do a thorough edit in Frugal Editor? It’s a terrific exercise, and not just for catching errors. I’m amazed as I read [an] anthology at the different writing styles. Some, like Maya Bohnhoff have sheer poetry in their lines. Others, like Alex Lobdell, are more practical and plot-oriented. Tim Meyers has a unique rhythm, so that I hesitate to add or subtract a comma despite the dictates of grammar rules, while Ken Pick and Craig Loewen had such a great story going, it wasn’t until I read it backwards (for the second time) did I notice things like “they left, leaving him alone.”
Start at the end of the book and go backward one sentence at a time. The idea is to remove the sentence from its contest, so the mind does not “fill in” missed words, punctuation, etc. for you. In high school, our teacher said to go one word at a time to check for misspellings, but with word processors, that’s not as necessary—better to get the sentence so you can check for homonyms.
----
Karina is editor of, Infinite Space, Infinite God, 2007 EPPIE Winner for Best SF
Now available at www.twilighttimesbooks.com
And here's how Hill Kemp "reads backwards."
Carolyn: Here's a technique for editing I used lately and it really worked well for me.
When I got to the point of a completed manuscript, spell and grammar checked, I wanted to look for some of my 'usual' problems. But when I read my work, I get into the drama and conflict and have trouble keeping my 'editor eye' on what I'm reading. Here's my solution.
I keep handy a list of the most frequent changes my talented editor makes for me. Then I read the manuscript BEGINNING WITH THE LAST PARAGRAPH. I proceed to read each paragraph in reverse order through the first chapter. Reading paragraphs in reverse sequence lets me focus on editing more than the drama.
