"Sharing with Writers" is the official newsletter of Authors' Coalition,

http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com

an organization of writers who help writers.

To read this letter in plain vanilla text, just scroll down. To read this newsletter with a bit more pizzazz (not much, though!) at Authors Den go to:

Note from Carolyn:

My fellow AC Members and SWW Subscribers:

I couldn't help myself.

I wanted to keep my "Sharing with Writers" blog sort of ranty and educational but I also want to recycle (many of you know how I am about recycling writing!) some of my reviews. Finally, my friend Allyn Evans (http://www.allynevans.blogspot.com/), author of Thinking Out Loud blog, suggested something that was floating around in the back of my head. Why not start an all-review site? One that doesn't judge a book by its cover or the press it is printed on. Not a completely novel idea (pun there!) but not exactly old hat, either.

So, I've done it. It is www.TheNewBookReview.blogspot.com. I'm not going to tell you all about it. You'll have to go snoof around a bit. But you'll see that there are ways for you to participate so it will probably be worth the minute it takes.

Besides, it turns out I really like blogging! (-:

Letters-to-the-Editor

Carolyn, when I read your Oprah story (www.sharingwithwriters.blogspot.com) , it reminded me somewhat of my “Not Famous Enough” story.

After my book about my mom’s journey through Alzheimer’s, When We Become the Parent to Our Parents, was published, I received invitations to speak from nursing homes, caregiver groups and libraries.

Then a call came from a nursing home in a distant state, where my husband and I often travel for business. They had heard about me from another nursing home where I’d appeared on a panel.

This invitation included the opportunity to be their featured luncheon speaker. They also would set up a table where I could sign and sell books. And they would pay me…a considerable fee! You can imagine how excited I was. My husband and I hadn’t planned to be in that state at that exact time, but were willing to rearrange our business schedule.

Would I send a copy of my book priority mail? I e-mailed them after I sent the book and also let them know we’d made airline reservations. I didn’t hear anything. About two weeks before the event, I called…and finally reached the gal who’d invited me.

“I was going to call you, Mary. We’ve cancelled your talk.” (I’m not sure cancelling is the word she used, but the meaning was the same…they didn’t want me.)

When I pressed her for a reason, she said I wasn’t the author they thought I was. After they received my book, they discovered this…but somehow didn't think it necessary to call me then (6-8 weeks before the event). From what she said or the way she said it, I got the impression they thought I’d deceived them. I pointed out…they called me, invited me, had heard about me from the other nursing home. I didn’t claim to be anyone other than myself.

She also indicated I wouldn’t draw as many people as someone with a famous name. I told her I was sorry neither my mom nor I were famous. But I grieved just as much as famous people did over my mom’s illness and death…and my mother suffered just as much.

Then I mentioned that we’d made airline reservations based on their invitation and I was upset because they didn’t have the courtesy to let me know. Unfortunately, the people who made this decision didn’t call me. They left it to this gal who got the brunt of my annoyance. She had been so very excited the first time she called…they were going to do all kinds of publicity, etc., etc., were so pleased I’d come, would sell my books beforehand, as well as the day of the event.

I asked her to pay for the book. “I don’t think we can” or something like that was the response. I told her they should pay for it or send it back. Finally I sent an invoice and a couple months later the book came back media mail, when they’d asked for it priority.

Live and Learn, I guess. But now I make it very clear who I am. My mother wasn’t a famous actress, politician, author. However, she’s a person who meant a great deal to her family. Most people don’t care because their parents/spouses aren’t famous either…just someone special to them.

I thought of my experience as I read your Oprah one, about people needing to be famous or have someone famous recommend them to get through the gate. (Although even [being published by a famous person] ...didn't help your friend!)

About Those Libraries!

Gentle Rant About Passing Around the Falsehood that Libraries Work Against Us

This thing that authors keep taking about!

That people take books out of the library rather than buying one thus depriving an author of his or her royalty.

That libraries won't buy books but ask for donations from their local authors.

That, therefore, libraries are the big ogres of the publishing industry. Don't you believe it!

In general this reasoning doesn't hold water:

 People who borrow from libraries often can't afford (or don't think they can) to buy books and wouldn't buy a specific book in a bookstore in any case. They'd borrow, choose something else to read or buy something for a dime at a garage sale.
 That 10-15% royalty an author fears "losing" on any single borrowed book is more than made up for with opportunities offered authors by most libraries.
 People who borrow from libraries may be the ones who talk the most to other readers (they do hang out at libraries with other readers, after all!)
 Many libraries are on stricter budgets than ever before. They're not just taking advantage of authors.
 Because of changes in the publishing industry, some communities have more writers than they can keep up with in terms of acquisitions. So, how many of those writers will support the library's efforts if they do buy copies. Many authors will do nothing to let their readers know copies are available at libraries because so many of us have the attitude that a single sale is better than a single person reading a book.

I guess I don't have much patience with authors who would prefer to get their 15% royalty (not huge, mind you! Often less than a dollar.) rather than gain a new reader. A new reader who likes your book might tell another reader and he or she still another. Some will buy. Some will borrow. Either way, it's exposure for your book. So when a library asks for a donated copy, for heaven's sake, give them one. Give them TWO. and a poster! And ask them to put one of them on display with that poster for a little while. Everyone wins including the borrowers! (-:

I'm going to be tough here. This whole library attitude among authors is not only lousy reasoning, it's a great big whine. Did you ever notice that hardly anyone ever mentions that when this happens, it also denies publishers of their profit? That libraries have budget woes of their own? That sometimes an author's biggest fan may not be the one who buys books but one who borrows from a library because they just read so darn many books?

Here's the thing. Let's not pass around the bad news about libraries (nobody's perfect!). Let's, instead, partner with them. To paraphrase a president, ask not what your library can do for you, ask what you can do for your library. That is a partnership that will take you a long way.

In the News

Rupert Murdoch is at it again but this time his acquisitions are a lesson for us all. He is after the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones. According to Time Magazine, he "is very serious about his Fox Business Channel, which is due to launch this year, and [that would] get a big boost from the Journal --and Dow Jones -- brand." Those of you have heard me preach "branding" or those of you who remember the section on that in the Frugal Book Promoter, will know how important that is to writers. Janet Elaine Smith (www.janeteleainsmith.com), author of PromoPaks, thinks I invented the word. (-:. So, how about examining how you're doing on that score right now?

Web Advice from WebforAuthors.com Expert

From Marshall Turner

The Metadata Myth
Ok, what is metadata?
Metadata is data that is used to describe other data, that is, data about data. For a website this describes a part of a webpage that you cannot see but can be seen by search engines. Located in the header of the page, some of the data that can be put here are keywords and descriptions for the page. This is an important part of a webpage as it provides a place to put information that you do not want to display to a visitor but could help you be found through a search engine. So what’s the myth? Simply put, search engines have gotten wise to the practice of stuffing unrelated information into your metadata. The search engines are now much more sensitive to the content on your web pages rather than this hidden data that people have tried to use to manipulate their rankings. Some search engines now ignore the metadata. So focus instead on your content and do not be overly concerned about your metadata.

Vocabulary: Keeping up with what's new out there. Most of you know I hate acronyms or just plain old initials. Quick! What does NCO mean? To me, it means Non Commissioned Officer. But I saw it in conjunction with a pilot international program on a business card the other day. Pretty sure this woman isn't military. Yes, acronyms and initials shorten and make easier, but they can also make it harder on the reader to understand. Now, here's a new one for you to memorize and maybe even (Yikes!) use. It's GWOT (pronounced gee'-wat). This is the Bush Administration's shortening of "Global War On Terrorism." How are you going to use it or make it turn the humor on a nice political blog?

=======================================================
When was the last time you bought a book from an author you know? Tracings, my new chapbook of poetry is available for that honor at www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599240173/qid=1141623936/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-4692447-2218401?s=books&v=glance&n=283155
but any book mentioned in any one of your Sharing with Writers newsletters would be a nice gesture. If all of us directed more of our reading to newer authors who write in genres we love or genres we need to stretch into, we would do ourselves and the publishing industry a great favor.

E-Tips for E-Promotion:
What have you done lately for your Amazon page: If you haven't added to what they are now calling the Amapedia section, do it now! Amapedia is Amazon's word for a kind of Wikipedia. It is waiting for you to add some information that that Amazon didn't get into the section where they quote from reviews or give other vital info. Have you won an award? That information goes there! Have a great new blurb? Amapedia. Make this section work to sell books to anyone who visits your page. Now is the time.
