Note from Carolyn:
My fellow AC Members and SWW Subscribers:
It will soon be Nobel Prize time. Most of us aren't holding our breaths but there is a happy substitute for writers of serious and artistic literature. It is my Noble (Not Nobel!) Prize.
The Noble Prize for literature is for books that explore the human condition and have not won other major awards. I am accepting nominations for it now for 2007. Published books and chapbooks of poetry, plays, memoirs and literary novels are eligible. Books must be submitted by Sept 15, 2007, but may have been published in any year. Results are published each January on the "Back to Literature" page at www.MyShelf.com. Query me at HoJoNews@aol.com . Please put "NOBLE PRIZE QUERY" in the subject line. The prize is honorary only, no monies or gifts. Opportunities for publicity come with it as a matter of course. Readers may nominate their favorite books and authors may nominate their own.
Past winners include authors like Leora Krygier, Chris Meeks, Leora Skolkin Smith, and many more subscribers to this newsletter.
Happy, happy writing and promoting!

Tip: Lessons from billboard advertising. Most of us won't consider billboards because of the expense. The thing about billboards, though, is that people have to absorb their message very, very quickly. And remember it! So, a series of billboards works better than one (true with advertising in general!) but the message also NEEDS to be short and NEEDS to be BIG. Huge, in fact! Not many authors can afford a series of billboards (or even one, for that matter!) but the same concept applies to book covers. The big authors (Nora Roberts, anyone?) don't have a 12 pt font name on their books. That name is BIG. And it's often in silvery or gold foil so it glitters. And the font is raised so you can feel it! Many authors can't go the foil and raised route, but we can encourage our publishers to up the font size on the covers of our books. (-:

Feature
J. K. Rowling, the LA Times and the Deadly but Hallowed Profit Lament
I don't know who I want to scream at.
The booksellers who are bewailing that they won't make a profit on Harry Potter or the LA Times (July 16, Page A1) who planted a Poor, Poor Booksellers article on their front page and didn't address any of the benefits of selling hundreds (maybe thousands!) of copies of the new Harry Potter in any given store—however discounted—until, oh, I don't know . . . maybe a thousand or two words into the copy runover on page eleven.
Later in the article we do see that there are some benefits to booksellers even if they don't make much on each copy of any specific book they sell.
As a retailer-turned-writer, here's how the benefits stack up, even if booksellers lose money on this next J. K. Rowling book:
1. A hot item, deeply discounted, is called a loss leader. That's what Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is working itself up to be, a loss leader. That means it will draw tons of traffic (you and me) to bookstores both virtual and those in our hometown whether they're made of stucco, brick or a stack of cards. ~ For the other six benefits and an idea of how retailing promotion can work for you and your book, go to www.sharingwithwriters.blogspot.com . And yes, please leave a comment (-: .
(This article is available for reprint in .pdf format on my Free Content" page at: http://www.carolynhowardjohnson.redenginepress.com/free_content.htm. )

Tri-Coast Opportunity: Subscriber and author-event coordinator Tina Carey www.tinacarey.com, sent this note to me. It is from a colleague of hers about an opportunity that might interest some of you:
"Hi Tina,
. . . am working with TriCoast Studios from Santa Monica, and we started a publishing dept. They are looking for new authors so if you want to send some unpublished or self published authors (murder, romance, mystery types) you can send them our way. Authors coming our way will have a better chance to have their works looked at for movies and or TV possibilities as the studio is always looking for new works. The new authors will have a better possibility of getting their work looked by our studio than a traditional publishing company which has to publish the works then search for another outlet if they are so inclined. Or, have an author's agent do it. This way should make it easier for authors than the traditional way.
Have them check out the studio website: www.tricoast.com and then send e-mail queries to me at: SteveR@tricoast.com . or call 310-458-7707."

TIP: When people want a signed book but they've already bought it at a bookstore or on Amazon, I send them a personalized label. I buy white, laser-perforated labels (prettily laser-perforated with swirls and fleur de lys) from stores that sell Mrs. Grossman's stickers. They're cheaper when purchased by the roll than bookplates from bookstores or online. I also buy a pen or other writerly design label/stickers to go with it. Just sign the label, put your second design with it, add a thank you note, pop it in the mail and voila! Even better than a book signed on the title page.
Yes, I would be happy to do that for The Frugal Editor. Just let me know you pre-ordered it from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0978515870/

Web Advice from WebforAuthors.com Expert Marshall Turner
What Metadata Can't Do for Your Site's Spot on Google.
An author has a non-unique name with a unique spelling. When searchers Google the correct spelling her website is at the top of the results. If they use the common spelling, her website is not shown. Author wants her website to appear under both spellings, so what can we do?
An analysis of the Google results from the misspelling reveals that there are legitimate sites (blog, wiki, etc.) of people with that name. We also discovered multiple sites referring to the author but using the incorrect spelling.
We added metadata using the keyword and description tags and after a Googlebot crawl we checked the results. The site was not listed using the misspelling. This appears to confirm the comment I made a few months ago about search engines ignoring metadata tags. So what can we do? Our next step is to find a way to incorporate the misspelling into the site's content. Results in a couple of weeks.
